The Dark Forest
The Dark Forest | Cixin Liu
This near-future trilogy is the first chance for English-speaking readers to experience this multiple-award-winning phenomenon from Cixin Liu, China's most beloved science fiction author. In Dark Forest, Earth is reeling from the revelation of a coming alien invasion-in just four centuries' time. The aliens' human collaborators may have been defeated, but the presence of the sophons, the subatomic particles that allow Trisolaris instant access to all human information, means that Earth's defense plans are totally exposed to the enemy. Only the human mind remains a secret. This is the motivation for the Wallfacer Project, a daring plan that grants four men enormous resources to design secret strategies, hidden through deceit and misdirection from Earth and Trisolaris alike. Three of the Wallfacers are influential statesmen and scientists, but the fourth is a total unknown. Luo Ji, an unambitious Chinese astronomer and sociologist, is baffled by his new status. All he knows is that he's the one Wallfacer that Trisolaris wants dead.

I struggled a lot to get into this book, because at times it can be quite dense, and there are times when the writing to describe women is...less than ideal. However, when the plot started to take shape, I could not put it down. It's truly an interesting timeline and story that takes place across this book and the first, I've never read anything like it. I'm intrigued by what could be in the final book, as the ending was quite good for this one.

In the end, I loved this one as much as I did love the first one. I am no frequent reader of this kind of sci-fi literature (I guess, @Jari-chan called it “western sci-fi”) but I loved all the ideas, twists and turns Lui put in his story. 😃 I admit, I sometimes had difficulties keeping the characters apart but that only has to do with me being unfamiliar with Asian names.

I immediately started listening to the third, and sadly, last part.

2021 was a really odd reading year for me. I didn‘t read a lot and I read quite a few books that I wouldn‘t usually pick up but somehow they worked.

Different from the first book, but still very interesting. Unlike The Three Body Problem, The Dark Forest gives the reader a lot more information about what's going on. It is about humanity's reaction to the events of the first book. Broken into sections of time rather than chapters makes the timeline of the book very clear (but also makes it even easier than normal to read WAY too late into the night). Definitely recommend.

When they looked at each other, a richness of meaning poured from their eyes just as the clouds poured from the cloud well created by the gravitational beam, endless and unceasing.

I didn‘t think The Dark Forest could possibly be better than The Three-Body Problem. I was wrong. I was entertained, I was educated, I was moved and I cried. I felt alive reading this book. I have recommended these to all my reading friends. I hope they do read them because humanity will only improve the more people who do. LOVE THIS BOOK ❤️

The first book left me a bit confused, and I wasn't sure about really continuing this trilogy. That's why it took hubbie to tell me, to read the second installment. And he did right. This part is less confusing, maybe because all the game elements are done, and the story focuses on humanity's will to survive. Liu brings some fresh air into the western sci-fi genre, and I hope there will be more by him and other writers ⬇

Jari-chan from all around the world translated. They bring new ideas, undiscovered worlds, and important messages, adding to our literary and intellectual lives.

Another great book in a trilogy that is proving to be a good workout for my computer-fi fiction brain. Rock hard sci-fi yet again, this time concerning faster than light travel and inter-planetary relations. A fantastic continuation of the trilogy. I couldn‘t stop listening, can‘t wait till the library get the third book as an audio book!

⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ A great sequel to the Three Body problem and a thoroughly enjoyable hard science fiction read. It brings in physics, astronomy and philosophy (and lots of it) but also spends quite a bit of time alternating between the message of desperation and that of hope. It gets inside the human soul and explores some of the darkest corners. A five star read for sure.

My last book of 2021 AND first book of 2021 will be the same - The Dark Forest by Coxon Liu. I‘ve had very little time to read lately 😕 and it‘s a book that‘s long (a bit over 500 pages) and not a quick read at all. So worth it though! I‘m really enjoying it. #lastfirst

Calling Cixin Liu's work "cerebral" is an understatement. The Dark Forest is the sequel to The Three-Body Problem. It's a bit of a slog but it picks up when it jumps into the future. The ending is deeply compelling, a philosophical meditation on the nature of scarcity and competition.

The second in this series (after The Three-Body Problem) tackled some serious metaphysical questions and also definitely answers the Fermi paradox, and does so over a 200+ year time jump. Darker and more cerebral than its predecesor, in a good way.

1.5/5⭐ The ideas are interesting (like an alien species whose thoughts are completely transparent and how that affects alien/human understanding). But the story draaaaaaaaaaags. And wanders into long tangents (like imaginary characters coming to life for their writers). The tightness of the first book's writing that kept me invested despite not understanding a whole lot of the physics was completely absent in this book.

If you want a light fun read that will not leave you feeling like your soul has been stripped bare, do not read this book. If you want slow read full of space battles, engineering solutions/problems, human/alien psychology and possible strategies against an alien race who thinks of humans as bugs, read this brilliant book. I am exhausted.

"The second book in Cixin Liu‘s 'Remembrance Of Earth‘s Past' Trilogy, 'The Dark Forest' expands upon the foundation established in 'The Three Body Problem' with deeper characters and somehow an even grander scope. 'The Dark Forest' is a brilliant piece of sci-fi literature and a must-read for any serious sci-fi nerd like myself!"

This was a slower burn than its predecessor but by the end oh so good! The crazy shift to the future with a bleak outlook for humanity tinged with a decidedly Chinese perspective makes this a terrific read for hardcore fans of Sci-Fi. I was going to get to the third book later but have bumped it up to being the next book on my list because the world Liu crafts is just so damn good.

I have been busy, but have taken time here and there to enjoy the epic 2nd book of this trilogy. A complete stranger came up to me while I was reading this book and told me it is, in his opinion, the best of the three. Not sure how I feel about someone planting judgments and such like this in my head. I throw up my arms in light of this warring comparison in my head and try to embrace this as a continuum.

Uggghhh, I like it! But I was exasperated by it! Then I was stunned by it, and at the end I knew I had to keep going with it! This is the most vexing, interesting, mind-bendy series I‘ve picked up in a long time, and I just can‘t stop 😛. Also, if I was scared of us contacting aliens by the end of the first book, now I‘m downright terrified. Let‘s just all keep quiet on this little happy blue orb of ours, y‘all 🤫.

AiBBot I just finished it. I totally agree with you. I feel so exhausted and drained. It was so brilliant though. 3y

Mixed feelings!! Like the first book, this was dense is a very good way. It made me think, had LOTS of twists and turns and was brilliantly executed. However, it took 2/3 through a verrrrry long book featuring many characters before we were introduced to a woman that wasn‘t a Mary Sue, Femme Fatale, or Pixie Dream Girl 🙄 The protagonist of book 3 is a lady though, so I‘m feeling optimistic about the series as a whole.

I enjoyed this much more than THE THREE-BODY PROBLEM. The characterization is far richer, perhaps because Liu turns his gaze on a greater variety of people, and the science remains seriously cool. I got a kick out of the time jumps, too, and that's something I rarely say.

There WERE still boring patches, though, and I often found it too easy to zone out. I think I'll have to read the last (and longest) book in print instead of on audio.

Character development was much better than the first book. The ideas were Incredibly unique as far as the scientific theories, but I found his attempts to dive into human psychology a little superficial. Which psychology is a large portion of the plot, since that is the whole role of the wallfacers. While there were moments that Liu had some very in depth interpretations, there were other moments that felt forced and shallow.

I had to preserve my streak (10,000+ steps for 31 days straight), so I turned on THE DARK FOREST and took an #audiowalk.

xicanti @Soozee @MayJasper a zorb is a huge inflatable ball with a hollow centre large enough for a person. In New Zealand, where it started, people climb in them alone or with friends (and sometimes with some water, too) and roll down hills. The ones I saw yesterday were part of a carnival in a flat Canadian field, so the kids had to bounce around to get them to move. 4y

I woke up to news of Anthony Bourdain's suicide and some political developments that upset me, so this morning was Not Good. Somehow, though, I managed to write 4600 words and take a 4-mile #audiowalk through the sort of hot, cloudy weather that makes me feel a bit better about the world.

Then I came home, drank my favourite beer, and watched another episode of AMERICAN GODS.

Well, yes, the sun will rise, but will humans be alive to see it? This is the 2nd in a complex science fiction trilogy that spans centuries. It gave me much to ponder. I really like its large and fascinating cast of characters, especially astronomer Luo Ji. Translated from Chinese by Joel Martinsen; #audiobook (22.5 hours) narrated by PJ Ochlan.
