#bookreport and #weeklyforecast can both be summed up with: more Nebula reading!

I finished the novelettes and one novella, Mammoth at the Gates, and I'm about 40% into both another novella and one of the novels. This week I want to finish the novellas and the novel I've started, and at least start another, ideally finish it too. But we'll see.

Whether horror or post-apocalyptic, these stories are all pretty unsettling. Not quite the right fit for my taste or current frame of mind but they were certainly effective.

As I was reading this I wasn't completely sure how I felt about it. It took a leap of faith to believe erased memories take the form of a living being. But the author nailed the ending, so I was satisfied! So often a lackluster ending ruins a story for me, so this was a pleasant surprise! Read this from @MeganAnn 's #auldlangspine list, so thanks!! And thanks to @Monalyisha

MeganAnn I‘m glad you liked it in the end! I thought it was a very unique little book and she definitely nailed the ending. I haven‘t read anything else quite like it. 3w

I had an on-boarding issue with this book, I just didn't connect to the character. The writing is good, the story is good, very Shirley Jackson who I love. And a nice svelte 98 pages. Definitely worth a try for other people. But there is just something in the first third which didn't work for me and left me outside the glass for the other two thirds. I can respect this story but I just didn't get the emotional response to it.

A compelling premise, the alternate history undertones and noir storytelling vibes attracted my attention to this book. While this is ultimately an interesting story that unpacks some complex ideas about history, nations, and the ways that we exert social control over people, I felt like the intersection of three styles of storytelling and construction impacted the pacing and kept me a bit at arms length which was a shame.

@Howardsimmons reading with the newest member of our household, Gracie!

She‘s about ten, ended up at the shelter when her person died. She‘s about as sweet as can be! Not the temperament we expected from a chihuahua. Just wants to cuddle and nap. 💤

This was quite the ride. If you enjoyed her first book, The Power, you‘ll likely enjoy this. The Future details a fictional scenario where the social media execs are accelerating the collapse of the natural world through encouraging consumption and spreading false narratives for profit. The book centers around the people fighting back. Edgy, bleak, and righteous. I enjoyed it!

Gaaaaah. The perfect blend of speculative and historical. I would do anything for Laura and Freddie, and the way the Faland reveal crept up slowly was just masterful. Showed the realities of the war without being completely fatalistic. A+. #historicalfiction #speculativefiction
