The Crying Tree
The Crying Tree: A Novel | Naseem Rakha
7 posts | 7 read | 8 to read
Irene and Nate Stanley are living a quiet and contented life with their two children, Bliss and Shep, on their family farm in southern Illinois when Nate suddenly announces hes been offered a job as a deputy sheriff in Oregon. Irene fights her husband. She does not want to uproot her family and has deep misgivings about the move. Nevertheless, the family leaves, and they are just settling into their life in Oregons high desert when the unthinkable happens. Fifteen-year-old Shep is shot and killed during an apparent robbery in their home. The murderer, a young mechanic with a history of assault, robbery, and drug-related offenses, is caught and sentenced to death. Sheps murder sends the Stanley family into a tailspin, with each member attempting to cope with the tragedy in his or her own way. Irenes approach is to live, week after week, waiting for Daniel Robbins execution and the justice she feels she and her family deserve. Those weeks turn into months and then years. Ultimately, faced with a growing sense that Robbins death will not stop her pain, Irene takes the extraordinary and clandestine step of reaching out to her sons killer. The two forge an unlikely connection that remains a secret from her family and friends. Years later, Irene receives the notice that she had craved for so longDaniel Robbin has stopped his appeals and will be executed within a month. This announcement shakes the very core of the Stanley family. Irene, it turns out, isnt the only one with a shocking secret to hide. As the execution date nears, the Stanleys must face difficult truths and find a way to come to terms with the past. Dramatic, wrenching, and ultimately uplifting, The Crying Tree is an unforgettable story of love and redemption, the unbreakable bonds of family, and the transformative power of forgiveness.

Been feeling rough the last few days (not COVID as I‘ve tested a lot, think it‘s just the ‘cold from hell‘ instead!) so reading a lot, being looked after by Henry.

This was a random selection off my TBR shelf and, unexpectedly, I really liked it. Irene‘s son, Shep, is shot dead in a robbery gone wrong and, many years later, his killer faces execution. It reminded me a bit of earlier Picoult books.

Mitch Puppy cuddles are the best tonic! ♥️ 2y
rockpools Hope you‘re feeling better soon! Henry looks v relaxed 🐶 2y
Amiable My husband and I were sick a few weeks ago—also not COVID, according to test results. He said, I guess we just have a horrible cold. I was like, wait, are people still getting those now? 😀 It‘s been so long since we‘ve been sick with ANYTHING (thanks to masking, social distancing and hand hygiene) that we‘ve forgotten what it‘s like! Hope you feel better soon. ❤️ 2y

⭐️⭐️1/2

Other than the thought provoking topic regarding the death penalty, I found little to enjoy in this book. Sometimes it seemed like a deeper piece. Sometimes it was cheesy and annoying. The storyline involving the prison superintendent felt completely unnecessary. There were other components that really bothered me although I will leave it at that to avoid spoilers.

Your duty? Hmm.

I hope there is something redeeming in this; that this is not the view of the author but, instead, an idea meant to communicate the regret that will follow. Supporting your husband and having to pack up and move your family halfway across the country because he decided to take a job he didn‘t need to take without any consideration to how it might affect you and the children seem like two very different things to me.

This was a well written and interesting story. Not my usual pick but I took the recommendation from my best friend @Aliking1986 and I am very glad I didn‘t wait to read it. It was heartbreaking and reminds us of the damage the prejudice of some members of society can cause. Unusually for me, I can‘t find the words to review this - you just need to read this raw and yet beautiful story.

Aliking1986 Glad you enjoyed-isn‘t it amazing how the books we nearly didn‘t read are often the ones that move us the most? 6y

Late #booknerdproblems Didn't think I had any until I flashed back to last month when hubby and I spent a weekend in Palm Springs. Returning, as I unpacked he came in and I was literally weeping.
Him: what's wrong?
Me: I just realized I left my kindle on the nightstand!
Him: it's not the end of the world...um, I see by your face it is
(I called housekeeping--still crying--and they found and mailed it back😍) pic is granddaughter but how I felt!

Suzze Glad you got it back! 7y
