Bailing Out
Bailing Out: Sane Way Get Out of Doomed Relationship and Survive with Hope and Self-respect | Barry Lubetkin
10 posts
As a leading cognitive behavior therapist, Dr. Barry Lubetkin has heard every excuse there is for staying in a bad relationship: "The time isn't right." "We have to stay together for the children's sake." "It's too late to start another relationship." Created out of fear and guilt, these rationalizations can lead to depression, phobias, and psychosomatic illnesses. But the real problem-- your desire to get out of the bad relationship-- is barely recognized. In "Bailing Out" you'll discover whether you should get out of your relationship, and if so how to make the leap. "Bailing Out" is filled with daily logs, checklists, exercises, and more, including: Step-by-step survival techniques for weathering your breakup Compelling case studies from people who have been there A do-it-yourself "Fear Buster Chart" to help you pinpoint those things that are standing in your way-- and show you how to counteract them with healthy actions Relaxation techniques to help you cope with the anxiety of those first few weeks of sleeping alone, a leaner bank account, single parenthood, the fear of AIDS, and the high cost of divorce But perhaps the most important message in "Bailing Out" is that you can free yourself from a bad relationship-- and happily, healthfully, and confidently survive.

I embraced #HailTheBail this year, andI plan to continue to do so in 2025. StoryGraph makes it easy to see what I dropped this year, so here are the 📚 that didn‘t work for me.

I am about 5 seconds and 5 pages away from a slump! I have never bailed on this many books I was 200 pages or 3-5 hours into in a single month. I just can‘t seem to focus on anything, especially on audio, which is strange for me. Usually I‘m a book a day person and I‘ve only read 18 so far this month. Idk. I‘m not in a particularly good place mentally or physically so that‘s probably it. 🤷🏻‍♀️😢

AmyG Oh no. I feel this, too. I‘m listening to an audiobook and all I know is a lady is missing. Hugs…I hope things ease up a bit. 11mo
Centique Youve got a lot on your plate and its perfectly understandable for your reading to feel different 💕 All your friends here love and support you whether youre reading heaps or reading a little. I hope you can find something else that entertains you - maybe catch up on some movies? Much love and best wishes for your parents too 💕 11mo
BarbaraBB Don‘t ask too much of yourself dear Meg. Like @Centique says you‘ve got a lot on your plate and reading should be fun or distracting. Try some palette cleanser instead of the serious chunksters I notice above ❤️❤️ Take care xxx 11mo

squirrelbrain Don‘t put too much pressure on yourself - sometimes books can add to the stress rather than acting as a balm. You‘re having a tough time as it is so just roll with it for a few days and hopefully the right book will present itself. 11mo
CarolynM I‘m sorry you‘re struggling. Forget the challenging reads for now and go for something light and fun, or go back to an old favourite that makes you feel good inside. Look after yourself💕 11mo

vivastory Maybe do a radical genre switch? I know you are a big fan of short stories but maybe dipping into a collection of poetry. Also New Directions has been releasing some truly lovely short oversized “storytime“ books that you might be interested in. They are meant to be read in a sitting. While at the bookstore yesterday I noticed new ones in the lines from Ginzburg & Ingalls. Hope you bust the slump! 💙 💙 (edited) 11mo
youneverarrived 😞 perhaps a re-read (or listen) of an old favourite might help? Sending love 💜💜 11mo

willaful Slumps are no fun. I often find genre switch-ups help, or maybe you just need some t.v. time for awhile. 11mo
sarahbarnes Thinking about you. 💕 11mo
ShelleyBooksie Sending you positive energy!! 11mo
Chelsea.Poole I can totally relate. When I‘m worried I can‘t read like I normally do and usually end up disliking/lost with what I am reading. This too shall pass. ♥️ 11mo
Leftcoastzen Sometimes nothing seems to work , it‘s hard to break through worries sometimes to enjoy reading. Hugs . A re-read of a comfort book can help. sending calming wishes .💜💜 11mo
Ruthiella Hope things look up soon. ❤️ I agree with @willaful - just let yourself not read, watch TV or listen to music or podcasts. 11mo
Aimeesue Hope things are better for you soon! 💙 11mo
Deblovestoread Take good care of you, the rest will follow in time. Sending 💜 11mo
MicheleinPhilly I feel you. I haven‘t even read 18 books this year. Do what you need to do to take care of you, the books will still be there when you‘re ready. ❤️ 11mo

Three bails ….I can‘t seem to settle on a book today 🤷🏼‍♀️

Nute Maybe, it‘s just the timing. I thought that I heard the 100 Years is supposed to be pretty good. 3y
Susanita No worries. It happens! 3y
Cinfhen It‘s 💯 me not you when it comes to these titles @Nute @Susanita I just wasn‘t feeling the books 🤷🏼‍♀️I‘ve heard good things about all them… I‘ll try again 🤞🏽☺️ 3y

Megabooks Boo! I hate it when that happens. 3y
Cinfhen I just could not connect @Megabooks and I bailed on two more earlier in the week 🤪 3y
TrishB I really enjoyed 100 years. Time and place sometimes. 3y
Cinfhen It felt to YA for me @TrishB and I wasn‘t in the mood for a book about death ☹️ 3y
TrishB I can understand that! 3y

1. All. The. Time.

2. Prose style, pacing, my mood in relation to the book‘s approach to the topic, etc. Most of the books I bail on aren‘t BAD. They just didn‘t grab me in the first three chapters and I‘m old (and impatient) enough that I don‘t wanna stick around in case they improve. I‘ve got tons of other stuff to read.

3. Yep. If lots of trusted folks enjoyed it, or if my mood shifts, I‘ll often try again a ways down the line. #sundayfunday

BookmarkTavern It‘s taken me so long to learn to bail! I used to never bail. 😂 Thanks for sharing! 4y

1/ I like to keep the ones I‘ve read that have been challenging or brilliant or beautifully bound. Otherwise I‘d give them away to a friend or charity( lots of kindle too though )
2/Depends ... how long is the book ?! At least a couple of days , or it could be a couple of weeks
3/ The Light Keepers by Abi Geni .. to be fair it was really good
, only filled with my worst phobias 😬

#wondrouswednesday
@Eggs
Happy Wednesday guys 👍🏻📚❤️

Reagan Oh... is The Lightkeepers the one that takes place on the Farallon Islands? I am so afraid of birds, that one is not for me. Took a lot of nerve to read 5y
Cathythoughts @Reagan yes the birds were intense ... but my phobia is a different one ( can‘t even say it 😬 5y

Okay I feel bad but I just can't get through these books right now 😥😥 now, I'm definitely interested in trying 'A Ladder To The Sky' again, but 'Bowlaway' wasn't my cup of tea. Either way this experience has been great! I'll have to do this again another time in the future 😊 #LMPBC #GroupA @irre @LMJenkins @Erinreadsthebooks

Can I ask about the etiquette of bailing on ARCs?

Do you, or is it seen bad form? What do you do with the reviews? I'm currently wading through treacle - only another 100 pages, but it's a LONG 100 pages! If it was a library book, I'd have bailed around 150 pages ago...

TIA

Cathythoughts I never had an Arc ... but I love this picture 💙 7y
rockpools @Cathythoughts Pixabay strikes again 😉! I've only had them this year - it's a new problem for me! 7y
batsy I've bailed on one that I got through NetGalley and emailed the publisher to thank them and say that the book wasn't for me. They were very gracious about it :) I'm thinking they probably expect this to happen occasionally and would just prefer to be notified. Or so I hope. 7y

Kaye Same as @batty. I‘ve had books through Netgalley in the past that I just plain did not like. I didn‘t leave a review if I didn‘t finish it, but I did send a note to the publisher thanking me for the book, then explained why I didn‘t like the book or complete it. (edited) 7y
rockpools @Kaye @batsy Thank you both. Think I'll drag myself through the last bit of this, but helpful to know for the future. 7y
ErickaS_Flyleafunfurled I had to bail on one from Netgalley and asked the same question here! I didn‘t know what to do! Littens advised me to still post a review and explain why it didn‘t work for me. I would‘ve preferred to email the publisher but didn‘t have a way to do that. 7y
rockpools @ErickaS_Flyleafunfurled Thank you! Must have missed your post on this - or it was before I had the problem. I don't have a 'feedback to publisher' option either, so that's probably the way I'll go if needs be. It feels a bit weird, but I have tried! 7y
ErickaS_Flyleafunfurled Good luck! Sucks that this happened, but no reason to suffer reading something you hate. 7y
RaimeyGallant I was wondering this too. Off to read through the comments. 7y

That's me, I think. Pretty shallow today.
Just bailed two ARCs.
One because the Cyrano de Bergerac-esque story started off cute until the MC had to really rub it in that her best friend (secretly in love with her) was overweight. Over and over again. And the MC doesn't like Indian food, she thinks it tastes like dust. ?
The other because it was just "meh". Boy meets girl but there is an ex in the loop; and they live unrealistic London lives ?

Libby1 It sounds like you made some good bailing choices! 🙄 7y
Ms_T Life‘s too short to waste time. Onwards and upwards! 7y
RaimeyGallant They do sound blah. 7y
