Master storyteller Christopher Paul Curtis's Newbery Honor novel, featuring his trademark humor, unique narrative voice, and new cover art--now in paperback! Eleven-year-old Elijah lives in Buxton, Canada, a settlement of runaway slaves near the American border. He's the first child in town to be born free, and he ought to be famous just for that. Unfortunately, all that most people see is a "fra-gile" boy who's scared of snakes and talks too much. But everything changes when a former slave steals money from Elijah's friend, who has been saving to buy his family out of captivity in the South. Now it's up to Elijah to track down the thief--and his dangerous journey just might make a hero out of him, if only he can find the courage to get back home.

Published in 2007, Elijah is a non-fiction story about a young boy who is the first born free child in Buxton, Canada. Money was stolen from his friend and he goes on a quest to find the thief. I would recommend this story for my students to read because it is a fictional story that includes pieces of history that the students will enjoy. This story won the Scott O'Dell award along with many other awards.

4⭐ Bud, not Buddy 1936
I love a good orphan hero! Bud made me laugh, and that's saying something for me.

4⭐ Elijah of Buxton 1859
For the first half of the book I felt like I was waiting for something to happen. It was worth the wait! I did not expect that ending at all.

megnews I rarely cry at books but Elijah 😭 4y

What an awesome book this is! Christopher Paul Curtis has a knack for capturing the in-between innocence mixed with growing understanding of the 11-13 age range. In many children's books, the things that the child characters imagine are always worse than reality, but Curtis's characters don't have this comfort. They have the joys and laughter of childhood, but their challenges are serious, not contrived by adults to educate, but actual and real.

Part 1 of today‘s #bookhaul is courtesy of library discards - two featuring fierce females that the kiddo immediately grabbed, two classics, and what seems to be a sort of picture book composer bio. All for free! What kind of person would I be to just leave them there?

megnews I love Elijah of Buxton. 4y
MegaWhoppingCosmicBookwyrm I have absolutely zero self control when anyone offers free books, so no judgment here! 😅 4y
ravenlee @MegaWhoppingCosmicBookwyrm there were several others I convinced myself to leave behind...but when they‘re weeding the kids‘ department it‘s especially hard to resist! I think in the past 8-ish months I‘ve brought home over 40 books that needed a good home! 😳 4y

This Coretta Scott King & Scott O'Dell award-winning novel will have you in tears. It's about Elijah, the first born into freedom as learns the true meaning of that freedom. It's a must-read! I would use it as a LC. UDL & EL strategy is facilitate managing information and resources (6.3) & 48. Use group assignments, portfolios, learning journals and non-print options as alternative assessment. #UCFLAE3414SP20

SequoiaC123 Here are the extension activities: Extension activities: https://nobodybutcurtis.com/resources. If I were to use The Watsons Go To Birmingham-1963 and this novel in the classroom I would definitely have the students create a Venn diagram to compare the two novels. I think it would get them comfortable with higher-order thinking because then they would have to compare more than just book covers and characters. (edited) 5y
DrSpalding A literature circle is a good idea! however you have the wrong resource explanation that aligns to another book. I do like the idea of creating the Venn diagram however. (edited) 5y

Based on a real Canadian settlement inhabited by runaway slaves from the states. Curtis writes in a dialect that takes some getting used to, but the descriptions are vivid. Elijah, who was born free (and is a child) is often naive about the realities of slavery. He gets a lot of guidance from the adults in the community. Curtis uses this to explain some big ideas in ways kids can understand. Starts slow, but kicks way up at the end.

This HF story is both a Newbery Honor and Coretta Scott King Award book and would be perfect for SR or IR in 5th grade classrooms. A story of an 11 year old boy, who‘s the first free born child in a Canadian settlement facing bravery, adventure, and heroism. #UCFLAE3414SP20

RaivionneC An HF book like this one fits UDL principle 3.2 in highlighting patterns, critical features, big ideas, and relationships and ESOL #44 focus on thinking skills, predict, categorize, classify, observe and report. 5y
Ashley_B This book sounds like a good read! Your UDL principle aligns really well with it also. 5y
Kyleigh_J Your review of this book is great, you truly make me want to read it! Great short summary. 5y
DrSpalding Christopher Paul Curtis is an excellent author. I have read several of his books and believe they could be excellent additions to your intermediate classrooms. Literature circles, read alouds and or an author study would work. 5y

This historical fiction book is an amazing book that reflects the spirts and political views of the 1890's in a runaway slave camp in Canada. The dialogue conveys the feeling of the period as well as reflects who the characters are.

I like this book and I have read it before. I believe I would use this as a suggestion for old students to read and maybe make a lesson out of it, just not with little ones.

winner of the Scott O'Dell and CSK awards, this work of HF follows young Elijah, who was born in Buxton, Canada, a community of runaway slaves, as he learns what freedom really is when he witnesses the hardships of slavery and bravery carries a baby to freedom. This Novel would be a great book for a LC. An ESOL strategy that could be used is #16 inorder to ensure comprehension.

Bwhitley222 UDL 3.1 should be used to give students an understanding of the time period and the Underground Railroad. #ucflae3414su19 5y

You can‘t go wrong with CPC. A tale based on a real town of runaway slaves in Canada. 80% of it was great, 20% was too much for my sensitive kiddo. Although the realities of slave life was gentled for young readers, it was still real. I‘d recommend for middle school on up. If you live near Buxton, Ontario, go visit! The real town is on my field trip must list now!

As delightful as I've come to expect from Christopher Paul Curtis. The narrator does a phenomenal oily preacher's voice. First time I've listened him, I will look for him in the future.

I didn't quite do this book justice, because I listened to the audiobook and can never seem to devote as much concentration to books in that format. Also, the blurb was misleading. It implied one plot was the main storyline when in fact that didn't start until past halfway through the book. It's actually episodic. But this was a beautifully done book, both the writing and audiobook narration. Heartbreaking, funny, and real. #WeNeedDiverseBooks
