In his witty essay on reading in bed (a minor art according to him), "Pillow Books," Clifton Fadiman recommends reading a book that is not so stimulating that it causes insomnia due to staying awake all night reading; nor a book that is so dull that it immediately causes the reader to fall asleep, but one that "neither bore nor excite." He calls Trollope "the perfect novelist for the bedside."
