I really enjoyed this collection of tales. The tales themselves are unfinished, as they are drawn from Tolkien's notes and unpublished manuscripts. In some ways, they illustrate how unfinished The Silmarillion, The Hobbit, and The Lord of the Rings are. This book is full of supplemental stories to add more details and background to those stories. The Tale of the Children of Húrin is one of my favorite Tolkien stories. The illustrations are great.

This may not be the Tolkien book for everyone. I struggled to get through a few chapters, but some of the less detailed stories in “The Silmarillion” get their time to shine. Plus there is more information on Galadriel and Gandalf if that is of interest to you. It also gives some behind the scenes pieces to “The Hobbit” that I really enjoyed. #bookjournal #tolkien

I'm loving everything about this book, particularly the chapter I've just finished, The Drúedain, which adds a little to the sparse store of information given about the Woses, or Púkel-men, who called themselves Drûg. There's a nice little folktale included, The Faithful Stone, which wouldn't be amiss in The Adventures of Tom Bombadil.
How is it that despite the reams he wrote, there is so much more about his world that I wish Tolkien had written?

Túrin is so bad-ass, but such a flawed and tragic figure. I think he and his story is one of Tolkien's greatest creations. I might re-read the Children of Húrin after this.

I have left behind SO MANY unfinished books in my wake this year, in addition to the ones that I carried over from last year, that I could spend the rest of the year just reading those and still just make a dent. But am I going to do that? Probably not!

Nonetheless, I plan to read 14 books by the end of the year to meet my revised Goodreads goal. That will cover all “assigned” books for challenges, etc., IF I read them all. 😎

And so we come to the end of yet another Tolkien book!

I really love seeing the amount of detailed put into these back stories and it's been pretty great to see some connections I didn't originally make while reading LoTR. Christopher has really done an amazing job archiving and publishing his father's work. I am in a constant state of amazement when it comes to the dedication of both men to these stories.

#LotRChapterADay

Riveted_Reader_Melissa I‘m beginning to feel like once we finish I should re-read LOTR‘s. 7y
Daisey Agreed! Reading them all together has added a lot of depth to my understanding and appreciation. @Riveted_Reader_Melissa LOL! I hadn‘t gotten to that thought yet, but I was beginning to wonder if I could keep up this almost daily reading of Tolkien for a full year. 7y
InLibrisVeritas @Daisey @Riveted_Reader_Melissa Same here! I feel like it's definitely a story you don't fully "get" until you have multiple read throughs. And I'm surprised at how long we've been doing this daily reading, and how much more there still is. 7y
See All 11 Comments
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @Daisey There seems to be enough published to do that. I‘ve added a few non-Tolkien books about Tolkien to my list too. 7y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @Daisey & @InLibrisVeritas I think it really started occurring to me the most in this one, as I read different notes that referred back to where people/elves mentioned this or that back in LOTR Ch X. I thought, after I‘ve read all the other background stories would those passages be different to me, mean more, now that I know the stories they are referring to from the past. (edited) 7y
JazzFeathers @Riveted_Reader_Melissa @Daisey @lnlibrisveritas l am going to reread LOTR. A friend of mine will gift me the English edition (at last!) next September. Will you gals wait for me? In the meantime, l too was thinking that l'd love to cime at least to June and close one year of reading Tolkien every day. So, count me in whatever you'll be reading. 7y
JazzFeathers @Riveted_Reader_Melissa l bought that book at a presentation and l mean to read it too. Let me know when you're going to 😊 7y
Daisey @Riveted_Reader_Melissa @JazzFeathers I listened to the book Melissa mentioned last fall shortly after we started and I‘ve also listened to one about Lewis and Tolkien. I would recommend both. 7y

I have so enjoyed finishing these Unfinished Tales with my #LOTRChapterADay (extended edition) group. Tolkien was a great, and immensely nuanced storyteller, his son Christopher a devoted son and detailed story archiver, whose life work allowed us to see the depth of creativity and true craft his father put into all his tales. I‘ve truly enjoyed the surface tale, and the deeper tale behind its creation and evolution.

Another great insight into the world of Middle Earth, this time into the mysterious palantiri, some of the most magical objects in Tolkien's stories.

I really really enjoyed reading this book. I hesitate di for a long time, uncertain what to expect. But it's really a pleasant immersion in the world of LOTR, though always not enough. It is so obvious fron these notes that Tolkien still had so many more stories in him.

I always enjoy Tolkien‘s stories, but this was definitely better during this reread directly following several of his other books and with the discussion of other readers. It's sometimes a bit confusing with different drafts of the same stories, a little frustrating in that it just whets your appetite to know even more, but overall fascinating in the background and depth it provides for a better understanding of Middle-Earth.

Daisey @JazzFeathers What are you thinking? It wouldn't take much convincing to get me to continue with something like the Lost Tales or some of his other translations, but I'm not sure how others feel. I also think @Riveted_Reader_Melissa has already finished it, but I still need to make time to read the rest of 7y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @Daisey I could be talked into it too, although I would probably need a brief break before we start to track down whatever book we decide to go with....although that might work and would give you a chance to finish The Perilous Realm first. I can‘t wait to hear what you think of Leaf after reading some of these stories. 7y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa You could just make finishing The Perilous Realm the next read, and then I‘d join back in after that. 7y
JazzFeathers @Daisey @Riveted_Reader_Melissa l still have to finish The Perilous Realms too. And l've already bought Lost Tales. I'll say no more 😇 7y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @JazzFeathers @Daisey Well I finished the Tales back when we read our section, but I‘m up to discuss them. So why don‘t you start with a plan for the rest of those for everyone who hasn‘t. And in the meantime I‘ll start tracking down The Lost Tales vol 1 & 2? 7y
InLibrisVeritas I was actually planning to finish up Perilous Realm myself, even pulled the book back out! I'd love to continue onward with everyone who wants to. I have the first part of Lost Tales as well, I'd have to track down the other. 7y

So the reason I originally purchased Unfinished Tales was for this chapter. I had no idea if I'd ever get around to reading the book but I love the Istari, and the sheer mystery surrounding them. I do with we had more solid info to go on especially in regards to the two Blues who seemingly just vanished.

Only one more day and we are finished!

#lotrchapteraday

TobeyTheScavengerMonk Alatar and Pallando! While I don‘t like the idea of anyone messing with Tolkien‘s creations, I have often thought about how cool it would be for some modern fantasy master to tell the Blue wizards‘ story. 7y
InLibrisVeritas @TobeyTheScavengerMonk I had the same thought. I desperately want more but it won't be true canon without Tolkien. Part of me is sad Christopher mentions some of his writing being illegible or unclear. 7y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @InLibrisVeritas Right! In my mind they drifted down into the worlds of men and being long lived outlasted the departure of the elves, and became what we know as ‘wizards‘ in later stories. So Merlin😂🤷‍♀️ 7y
See All 11 Comments
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @InLibrisVeritas Seriously though, I agree, the more I read the more I wish was fleshed out into completed spin-off stories. 7y
GlassAsDiamonds Oh yeah, The Blues (and, off topic but the Entwives!). Enquiring minds want to KNOW!!! 7y
InLibrisVeritas @GlassAsDiamonds Yes!! I need to know if they ever found each other, and what they were up in the years they were gone! 7y
JazzFeathers Sad as it might be, we have to accept that many stories have been lost through the millennia from the First Age to us 😜 l hope nobody will ever try to finish these stories. Not only Tolkien was his own writer (as any writers are) but he also had a specific education (on which Middle Earth is based) that will be hardly matched by any other author 7y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @GlassAsDiamonds Yes! You would think those Entwives would have emerged again somewhere in legend at least! 7y
GlassAsDiamonds @Riveted_Reader_Melissa you would, wouldn‘t you? Kinda hard to miss a massive tree in the middle of a field, surely??? @InLibrisVeritas I know! The history of the lstari is so fascinating. So little seems to be known about them and still they were so important in the war against Sauron.
Really loved that, in spite of their power as spirits, taking up a human body subjected them to humanity, in good and bad.

InLibrisVeritas Yes! It definitely puts their roles and relationships into perspective. I absolutely love that Gandalf was such an approachable character in The Hobbit and Fellowship, despite his power 7y
JazzFeathers @InLibrisVeritas Gandalf is an absolutely fantastuc character. Even we fantasy readers often don't see this, misled by the trope he gave birth to and which became so cimmon in 1970s and 1980s fantasy 7y

Again Christopher Tolkien amazes with his attention to detail, and I can‘t help thinking how much we may have lost, in the understanding of the art of writing and storytelling, now that things are edited in a computer and multiple past manuscripts aren‘t left around afterwards to be archived, examined, etc🧐
