Every once in a while this book would have me wonder what was real and what wasn‘t

It‘s hard to explain, but there‘s just something in Ellmann‘s writing that I love. I will definitely read more by her.

My favorite in the series so far…I think the writing is brilliant, and the study of human emotions is exquisite. Brunetti reinvestigates a kidnapping when a body that could be the victim is found. But, as always, things are not as they seem, so Brunetti has to parse out the truths from the lies. An excellent addition to the series. #192025 #1998

Another book finished for #Scarathlon2022 that fits the #TeamMonsterMash theme! The witches, my favourite Discworld characters, goes up against a family of vampires. The cover image sums up pretty well this chaotic and hilarious encounter.

If not for #ReadingAfrica2022 I would never have discovered this popular series about the lovely Mma Ramotswe, owner of the first ladies‘ detective agency in #Botswana. The mysteries she solves are not the point I think, the book especially shows a deep love for Africa. It‘s hard to believe a white man wrote this book yet he did an excellent job!

Ruth Rendell (writing as Barbara Vine) has created a gripping story out of a family mystery rather than a crime/sleuth combo. Set in the 90s in Devon and London, a middle class family looks deeper into their novelist father‘s life following his death. These are some of the most compelling, complex characters I‘ve read this year. I don‘t know if the ending is quite as good an explanation as I wanted. Still ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ #veryverybacklist #1998

Somewhere between a so-so and a pan for me. It started off really well and I was initially very intrigued to read about a 1950's Appalachian girl coming of age while struggling with undiagnosed Tourette's, but ultimately it didn't live up to its promise. The writing was too cloying and often downright cringey. Some moments felt sensitively drawn but others not at all. Things wound up in a bunch of platitudes- felt like a bit of a bait and switch!
