The Cat Who Dropped a Bombshell | Lilian Jackson Braun
post image
Pickpick

Rounding up a so-so, this penultimate installment in the Cat Who series contains a year of surprises, which is capped off with a “bombshell.” In the plus column, reference is made to Jerome K Jerome and 3 Men in a Boat, which I loved and will have to reread soon. In the minus column, Braun rather summarily does away with long standing characters, inexplicably with very little ceremony.

#2006 for #192025

Librarybelle I read one of the older books in this series many years ago…I should probably try this series again at some point. A modern classic series! 1y
mabell @Librarybelle I‘d say my favorites are from the middle of the series. They really are modern classics! 1y

Blue Christmas | Mary Kay Andrews

I picked this one up on a whim because the book I had chosen for #2006 for #19822022 challenge was actually published in 2005. I didn‘t realize this was part of a series and I probably would have liked it even more if I had read the other books. There‘s a little bit of mystery, romance, laughter and a whole lot of Christmas! Short, fast read! #winterreadathon

King Kong Theory | Virginie Despentes

An essay collection that was published back in 2006 and in a Norwegian review that I read it said that it felt dated, but I didn‘t find it that at all.

Despentes writes about rape, prostitution and the porn film industry. She tell about her own rape at 17, working as a part time prostitute in her early 20s. She looks at the stigma surrounding this, how the society expects you to react and to behave.

@Librarybelle

RowReads1 It was a very important book especially when it first came out. 🥰 1y
AnneCecilie @RowReads1 I can see that. It‘s still important. I thought it would cover something else because of the review I read. Not much has changed when it comes to these things since 2006. 1y
Librarybelle Great review! 1y
batsy I love this book. I read it when it initially came out and at that stage in my life it felt like a much-needed jolt. 1y

What Is the What | Dave Eggers

A remarkable book based on the true life story of Valentino Achak Deng, who left his home in Sudan at age 7 by force and walked hundreds of miles to find safety. Very sad, but written in a way that celebrates the tenacity and strength of a boy who becomes a man. Reading it reinforced my gratitude for all that I have. I alternated between reading the printed book and listening to the audio. The narrator on the audiobook, Dion Graham, was fantastic!

Librarybelle Double challenge prompts! Hooray! 2y

Phyllis wants to win the baking contest at the annual Peach Festival. Unfortunately, murder gets in the way. First in a cozy mystery series featuring a retired teacher as the amateur sleuth. I was not too crazy over the MC - Phyllis was a bit judgmental at times. Her son works for the police, and yet she seemed offended when he would not necessarily give her all of the info. Oh well…some cozies are better than others. #19822022 #2006

Another book about The Lost Boys, who came from #Sudan to the US after years of living in refugee camps in Ethiopia and Kenya. This is Achak‘s story, written down by Dave Eggers, who is so good in writing such biographies (Zeitoun, Monk of Mokha). The past and the present, a laugh and a tear: this book has it all.

The writing of this was a bit bland, but it was still a somewhat interesting story of the Astor family and the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel. It also talked about some of the Astor properties in England. #ReadingThroughTheYears192021 #2006
