Absolute Honor: A Novel | C.C. Humphreys

Pickpick

I'm going to miss Jack's adventures. The last book I started in September. I'm glad that @OutsmartYourShelf is flexible with #SPNBookBingo2025. This might be reaching, but ...you can't ignore the number.

OutsmartYourShelf I'm as flexible as I can be & I would accept this book for 'Crossroads', or 'Fake ID' as the British Army was used as law enforcement at times in the 18th century. Would that work? 1d
Butterfinger @OutsmartYourShelf I will keep it under 666 if that's okay. Look closely, that's how many pages it had. 15h
Butterfinger Fake ID would certainly work because Jack became a spy. 15h
OutsmartYourShelf @Butterfinger I get it, it just doesn't fit with the haunted hotel/motel element - if the main character stayed in an old, feasibly haunted, inn then I could be persuaded. 4h
OutsmartYourShelf @Butterfinger Exactly, so I think Fake ID would be better. 4h

Four children and a parrot want to explore an offshore island in the hope of finding a Great Auk.

Good fun, if not as gripping as I remembered from my childhood. Apparently this was the modernised/bowdlerised version, though I don't remember the original well enough to be able to tell.

Cuilin Love rereading books from childhood. I read most by Blyton but this group of kids I don‘t remember. 4d

The Mad King | EDGAR RICE BURROUGHS

Time for pulp fiction and Casey snuggles. THE MAD KING‘s cover led me to expect pseudo-medieval fantasy, but it‘s actually a contemporary-to-publication adventure novel about a young American who is mistaken for the runaway king of his mother‘s European homeland. The first three chapters were fun.

Bookwomble I've had this on my tbr shelf for a couple of decades! From my memory of the blurb when I bought it, I think it's ERB's nod to the Ruritanian romances of Anthony Hope. Good to hear you're enjoying it - I'll try to bump it up my list! 1w
dabbe Casey, you simply slay me. 🤎🐾🧡 1w
xicanti @Bookwomble I‘m almost halfway through now, and it‘s still good! If it were a novella, it‘d be at its natural end point, but there‘s still enough left that I expect lots of twists and exciting confrontations. 7d
xicanti @dabbe Casey‘s mission in life. 7d

The next in the 39 Clues series. This was another quick edition and Amy/Dan's adventure is fun to follow. Looking forward to continue the series.

15 Aug-26 Sep 25 (audiobook)
Read this aloud to Polly quite a few years ago and decided it would be a good series for Beatrix and I on the commute.
I enjoy Brontë‘s voice - both the actual narrator‘s voice and her view of the world. She is bright, funny and quite English. Her quest to visit her ten aunts in accordance with the instructions in her parents‘ magical will is fun and a little silly. And it is long, making it good value on audio.

Pickpick

I'm not really sure what to think of all of this, overall, but I do believe that if this young man had listened to advice, taken precautions, and been better prepared, he would have been able to survive. I think we share a lot of personality traits and opinions, but at the same time, for being so academically smart, he made some foolhardy choices that led to his demise.

Texreader I love Krakauer‘s writing. He‘s so good. And your review is spot on. 2w
Doppoetry @Texreader Thank you! Krakauer really put things into a neutral perspective and covered it from all sides. Overall, I do think of this as a tragedy. 2w
Texreader @Doppoetry It really was a tragedy. And that‘s why I think Krakauer is so good. He can tell a compelling and interesting story without injecting himself. 2w

Summer 1985, & two young mountaineers, Joe & Simon, set off from camp to climb a route no-one had conquered before. After several days they reached the summit with a few minor issues, but when setting off back down Joe has a catastrophic accident resulting in him breaking his leg. Disaster! Although Simon initially tries to belay Joe down the mountain, a snow storm develops which results in him having to leave Joe for dead.

OutsmartYourShelf Joe is not dead, however, & this book is the story of his unbelievable fight to survive & get down to the camp before the others leave.

This is a, what seems at times, minute-by-minute recounting of Joe's experiences on this climb in 1985. It's very detailed & honest, but it's not a book to read if you have anxiety! At the point where Joe was still trying to reach the camp & the others were preparing to leave it,

OutsmartYourShelf I felt myself becoming physically anxious that he wasn't going to make it - even though the book obviously says otherwise. Also, at first I felt rather irritated & indignant about Simon's decision, but the reader has the advantage of hindsight & after sitting with this for a short while, I could understand them more. It's not an easy read though. 3.5🌟
