Hunting Charles Manson: The Quest for Justice in the Days of Helter Skelter | Lis W. Wiehl

This is my current #netgalley read. It‘s interesting how many tidbits I didn‘t know, and I‘m enjoying this foray into the Manson world.

I was just reading about the death of Ronald Hughes, attorney to family member Leslie Van Houten, which mysteriously occurred right before closing arguments in the trial. Hughes was not taken with Manson‘s #angeleyes and insisted on defending his client regardless of what Manson wanted. #abbainaugust

Reviewsbylola I was afraid of that too. I have read quite a few Manson books (albeit not very recently) and I am surprised at how not redundant this is. Bugliosi understandably focused a lot on the trial. This book almost skims over the trial. It goes more in depth into some other killings that I don‘t remember being greatly detailed in HS—Hinman and Shorty Shea. So overall I find that it compliments HS very well. @kristy_k 6y

Reviewsbylola I hope you agree! I‘ve read at least one other review that said it was a regurgitation of HS but besides the obvious fact that it‘s about the same murders, I don‘t agree. In fact, the section I‘m on now is the author exploring other possible motives besides a race war. She is open to the idea that helter skelter was not the main/only motive, which Bugliosi wouldn‘t entertain. So it‘s interesting. @Kristy_K 6y

From my #nyrb #tbr stack... Louki seems to attract many admirers with her #angeleyes and this novel is told from their perspectives as well as hers. Modiano depicts Paris in the 1950‘s and the secret world of “writers, criminals, drinkers, and drifters”... a perfect combination 😉

Stonewall Jackson: The Man, the Soldier, the Legend | James I. Robertson

Though he was deeply religious, pretty close to the point of radical, I don‘t think anyone could say Stonewall Jackson had #angeleyes . One of the best Confederate generals during the American Civil War, his amazing skills as a leader helped the Confederate side win some important battles. He was killed by friendly fire at Chancellorsville in 1863, just prior to the arguably pivotal battle in Gettysburg. #ABBAinAugust

Librarybelle Note: His gaze in this image unnerves me. I had this for years on a shelf facing my bed, and it was almost like he watched me sleep. Eventually, I rearranged furniture so that wouldn‘t be the case, but every time I look at this, it‘s almost a haunting feeling I get. 6y
