I am stunned by the ending. I want to like it? I feel like it makes a particular point.. but the rest of it was so good. the “sisterhood”, Sloan‘s laments on “mom guilt” were so spot on it was nearly unbearable

“What kind of person would you be if you didn‘t choose your daughter over everything?” “..A man”

A sorority takes part in arcane rituals, an adjunct sociology professor researches their successful alumni and comes to a horrific conclusion

5feet.of.fury And I will add that even though that quote rang true #notallmen, my husband is the stay at home parent & I joked when I went back to work that “I loved being a dad” but then my own brain makes me think im a terrible person if I‘m doing something other than parenting or working. It‘s exhausting. Anyway- 3h

This is a really interesting historical fiction read incorporating true facts (the Zone Rouge is real & so was the Nazi fascination with the Occult). I think that the author did a great job of conveying the tense & suspicious atmosphere of an occupied country, where the inhabitants cannot be sure who is on their side & who is a traitor. In fact all the narrative concentrated on the war is done very well, but I found that (continued)

OutsmartYourShelf the supernatural side of things was a bit of a letdown after the build-up. I thought things could have been ratcheted up there a little more. It's a minor quibble though & I did enjoy reading this one. 4🌟

My thanks to #NetGalley & publishers, HarperCollins UK/One More Chapter, for the opportunity to read an ARC.

A very good installment in Brunetti mystery series set in Venice, in which the Commissario investigates deaths in a nursing home. The author explores the role of the church and the power it wields.

I enjoyed rereading this book with #HashtagBrigade. The novel is terribly melodramatic but a good read for the spooky season!

This was an OK read. It doesn't really have the sense of menace that some of the earlier books had, & you have to suspend your disbelief for something stuff, such as that a hospital would let a member of staff just give their kid a copy of a patient sign-in sheet. I suppose it was the 90s but even so! (continued)

OutsmartYourShelf In the midst of the high-speed ending, one character says to another “What are we going to do? Just drive around until we run into a plastic surgeon who can change our looks for free?“ - I actually burst out laughing because it was so ridiculous.
3.25⭐

This started of strong but then became incredibly convoluted. In one way it was a train wreck I couldn‘t look away from… but there‘s also some format issues, walls of italics for a POV… the book is already multiPOV & timelines it was unneeded. I‘m not convinced the timeline makes sense, but either way it was taking me out of the story. At 1 point the main character says something that was meant for another character… a mess.

Short Review:

This was quite a good cosy mystery with a well-worked out plot. I found it difficult to warm to Midge as a main character at first, but then I pictured her as being played by a middle-aged Miriam Margolyes & that helped. I do think that she was a little bit too timid though, & her characterisation focused too much on her weight at times. I'd definitely read another 'Midge Mystery' though. 4🌟

Leslie shares her red hair, green eyes, & birthday with her beloved grandmother, but at their joint party when Leslie turns 13, one of her grandmother's friends predicts that both Leslie & her cousin Trish will experience 'grave trouble' before they turn 16.

Now, 3 years later, Leslie can't wait for her Sweet Sixteen party, but strange things start to happen. Her fancy invitations go missing, her party dress arrives slashed to ribbons (continued)

OutsmartYourShelf but even worse, she is almost knocked down by a speeding car. It seems someone doesn't want Leslie to make it to 16.

This is a middle-of-the-road Point Horror, not terrible but nothing special either. You could make a case for just about all of the characters to be the culprit but seriously, it's not difficult to work out who the real one is. 3.25⭐

Book 2 in this series was great! I liked Cora & Iggy & the sisters getting deeper into their magic. +Cora‘s a reader so you get a lot of bookish jokes which I am always a fan of.

Bramwell Finch has just lost his old business partner & friend, & now looks set to miss out on his last hope for a coveted film award. Everything he sacrificed for success has come to nothing & now he has nothing & no-one. On Christmas Eve, Finch receives an invitation to a private screening at his studio, at a screening room he knows does not exist. Yet there it is - Room 6, & Finch sits down to watch his misdeeds played out onscreen.

OutsmartYourShelf When I first started this, it initially felt as if I had missed the beginning (similar to if you start watching a film partway through & it takes you a minute to catch up), but once I'd worked out what was going on, this turned out to be a pretty decent read. It seems to be a retelling of 'A Christmas Carol' with the dastardly main character being shown the error of his ways but set in the world of 1930s film-making. 1w
OutsmartYourShelf It was fairly short & kept my interest. 3.25⭐
