This is an author from my own City where I live, first time knowing about this author. The story was great..not knowing who the killer was until the end was good. Will read more from this author.

Two Metis cousins steal a herd of bison to release in an urban area, as an act of environmental activism. A good story, with plenty of humour and some suspense, that looks at the complexities of Indigenous issues.

I'm glad I found a book for the #52bookclub25 “includes a heist“ prompt, though I hadn't expected it would involve bison!

Taking #landback protests to a new level, two Metis youth move a herd of bison into a downtown Edmonton park. Activist Grey is determined to make a real difference while Ezzy, whose been in & out of institutions, his whole life, just wants to support Grey. Their plan works, sort of. But if course there are no easy fixes to colonialism or its impact on generations. Helping the bison doesn't save Grey or Ezzy from having to find their own path.

merelybookish Lots to like about this novel AND I found it took me a long time to read. The novel flips back and forth between their perspectives. I preferred Ezzy's as the writing of Grey's character didn't work as well for me. 2y

I am posting one book per day from my extensive to-be-read collection. No description or reason for wanting to read the book. Some are old and some will be new. Don't judge me - I have a lot of books.

This book by Malcolm Azania aka Minister Faust is about Hamza and Yehat, two guys who just want to help out their community in Edmonton, chill on the couch and watch anime, and work on their homemade mech suit. Then a femme fatale shows up to draw them into a dangerous quest for ancient Egyptian magics.

Hamza was probably the first Muslim MC I had encountered in a novel, which was mind-expanding in the early 2000s.

TobeyTheScavengerMonk I love this book so much, you guys. 5y

The author of this book is of the same ethnic background as his main character, Leo Desroches: one Cree parent & one French-Canadian parent. That in itself provides the protagonist, and by extension, his story, authenticity. However, there‘s not a lot of historical background—we only get the background of Leo and his mother, really. But I was intrigued by Arthurson‘s sense of place: he had me from the first few ⬇️

gradcat ⬆️ pages, when he writes of the plains in the high northern hemisphere and the ways the people have gone about both living and making a living here. Plus, he has written a complicated character in Leo. His is a colorful background, not all straight, but not so crooked as to be a hopeless case...yet. As a newspaper reporter, Leo gets involved in a spree of murders, and is in on solving them. This is the first of three books with Leo Desroches. (edited) 7y

I recently learned (the announcement for next season came in scratch card style) that this novel will be made into a play at the Citadel Theatre in Edmonton. I‘m pumped for it!
