Hello, #FurrowedMiddlebrowClub pals! I haven't been online too much lately, but I did finish our May selection a few weeks ago.

At first, I thought that Scarlett's take on the Cinderella story might actually be *too* sweet for me and verge on saccharine, but I should've had some faith. I ended up being all about and finished the book with such a satisfied grin.

Ruthiella Glad you liked it! I don‘t think I could read too many Susan Scarletts in a row because they are so formulaic- though as a teen I‘ll bet I could have!😂! 2h
quietjenn (Sorry about no-tags. I've been trying to get them posted for the last fifteen minutes and no luck. Will try later when maybe things are more stable?) 2h

A charming Cinderella story, though I felt a little sorry for bad-girl Cora. Also, when Bunny fainted, I laughed, it was so melodramatic- which was I think not the intended reaction. 😂

Aesthetician Ann, from an impoverished but proud and upstanding middle class family, meets cute Sir Timothy. Will class differences hold back true love? If you‘ve ever read Susan Scarlett before, you know the answer. 😍

rubyslippersreads ❤️ those old ads. My great aunt told a story about a beauty salon that caught fire. Ladies had to be extricated from those permanent wave machines. 😲 2w
Ruthiella @rubyslippersreads 😳 OMG! I can only imagine the panic! 2w
LeahBergen Yes, I also had an inkling about how it would turn out. 😉😆 2w
Ruthiella @LeahBergen Shocking! 😜😂 2w

Beautician Ann is the perfect size to fit the ill and absent bridesmaid‘s gown at an aristocratic wedding and reluctantly steps in to fill the role. She meets the dashing best man (a Lord, natch) and sparks fly. This was a lovely little pre-WWII Harlequin Romance/Mills and Boon riff on a Cinderella story and I was down for all of it. 😆

CarolynM I got a bit worried when poor Bunny was at death's door 🫣🥲 I should have known that it would all turn out well in the end😃 2w
Ruthiella Sounds like it‘s a perfect Susan Scarlett fairy tale! I hope to start it this weekend. 🤞 2w
willaful Ah, Never No More. I should reread that. 2w

Suet624 My mother was the only other person I‘ve ever heard use the word ‘natch‘. It brings up memories. 2w
LeahBergen @Suet624 My mother said it, too, and that‘s probably where I got it from! 😆 2w

Delightful! A sweet little romance, a lovely happy family and some beautiful clothes. Just what I've come to expect from Susan Scarlett. #FurrowedMiddlebrowClub

repost for @Ruthiella:

Happy Spring #FurrowedMiddlebrowClub members! May's choice is the tagged by club favorite Susan Scarlett, aka Noel Streatfield. Based on previous books by her, I expect a heroine we can root for and a baddie we can love to hate!

Be sure to tag everyone when you post blurbs or a review so we can like and comment. Read at your own pace.

All are welcome. If anyone wants to be added/removed from the tag list, let me know.

Ruthiella Thank you! 🙏 1mo

January 2025 Book #10
I know this one didn‘t work for everyone but it worked for me. I liked the idea of a novel within a novel. The drama in the novel aunt Addie wrote was so silly, maybe too long but I lol. It was like watching the movie Clue but without a murder. When you thought you had the answer another ridiculous situation appeared. It was fun but the ending also has nostalgic, sad moments for aunt Addie. I like these covers😍 3⭐️

LeahBergen Lovely review! I enjoyed it, too. 😊 1mo

Nicky and Sadie do NOT approve this message. 😼

Except for that slightly anti-feline quote, I loved this book. Every character was interesting, even (or maybe especially) when they were unlikeable. Poor JimJams!

Sace I can see myself rereading this (despite the anti-feline vibe 😂). 2mo
Ruthiella Poor Jimjams! 😢 Love the cover! 2mo
LeahBergen Oh JimJams!!! 😭 And I hadn‘t seen this cover before. How cool! 2mo

Realizing that I never posted about the #furrowedmiddlebrowclub book in March, mostly I guess because I finished while I was sick. I should've expected to be tense and anxious, based on other Moore books and that was certainly the case here. As predicted, I did a lot of internal screaming 😂. In a good way, though!

Ruthiella I also did a lot of nail biting! 😬😂 2mo
LeahBergen I was caught off guard by just how anxious this book made me! 😂 2mo
CarolynM It was a great read, if a little disturbing 😳 2mo

I don't know that I've ever been so glad to finish a book! The end was satisfying and I loved Elinor throughout (and Maxine! And Mory!) but this was super stressful reading! 😵‍💫 Langley Moore has created an absolutely diabolical character in Mrs Bankes. Despite the tension, this was really good.
#FurrowedMiddlebrowClub

Ruthiella Awesome! Would the end be so satisfying if the beginning hadn‘t got under our skin the way it did? 🤔 2mo
LeahBergen You made it through! 😆😆 2mo
bookandbedandtea @Ruthiella No, I think we definitely have to go through all the trauma to properly enjoy the ending. 😱 2mo
bookandbedandtea @LeahBergen I feel so relieved! What an uncomfortable story. 😬😁 2mo
