#hashtagbrigaide I‘m feeling overwhelmed by the prospect of tackling our Jan-Mar book, but know I‘m more likely to stick with it if I get a physical copy. I found this article to try and sort out the huge number of translations available https://welovetranslations.com/2022/01/10/whats-the-best-translation-of-the-brot... in case it helps any of you, but I‘d love recommendations on editions or translators from Littens who are in the know

Ruthiella I have the Penguin black spine edition translated by David McDuff. I trust Penguin (and Oxford and Everyman‘s) to use top notch translators. 5mo
quietjenn I read the P/V translation (vintage). They've a pretty solid reputation for translating the Russians 5mo
Deblovestoread I went with the Penguin Classics edition as well. 5mo

dabbe I must have missed next year's list. Does someone have easy access to it to share with me? 🧡🖤💜 5mo
TheAromaofBooks @dabbe - I happened to be looking through posts on this book trying to decide if I want to join the Hashtag Brigade and saw that you were looking for the list of books we're reading this year - not sure if you ever found it so here it is just in case!! https://www.litsy.com/web/post/2667446 4mo
dabbe @TheAromaofBooks Yahoo and thank you! 🤩😍😘 4mo
Cuilin I‘m using the same translators for War and Peace. Mine should arrive today. 🤞(off I go to check mailbox) I‘ll post mine. (edited) 4mo
TheBookHippie Using my favorite translators Richard Pevear and Larissa Volokhonsky 4mo
IndoorDame @TheBookHippie @quietjenn the edition I ended up going with is translated by them too. It arrived last week so I‘m all set to start the year off with a challenge! (edited) 4mo

Pickpick

I loved my first Barbara Pym, but at the end of the month I‘m still not sure why. What is it we respond to in a novel when nothing much happens and the characters aren‘t especially likeable? Is it the truth of the character sketches, the writing itself, some tiny piece of our own lives we recognize…? #hashtagbrigaide #pemberlittens @BarkingMadRead

BarkingMadRead The fact that it wasn‘t Tess…. #tessptsd 5mo
IndoorDame @BarkingMadRead 🤣🤣🤣👏👏👏 5mo
AlaMich Books where nothing happens are my jam. This is one of my favorites. It won the Lost Man Booker Prize, which is a thing I‘m not sure how to explain. 😊 (edited) 5mo

IndoorDame @AlaMich I do often have a fondness for that type of writing. I‘ll check this one out. Thanks! 5mo
dabbe Their problems seemed minuscule compared to some of us, too. All Wilmet seemed to be worried about was not finding avenues for her boredom. And I agree with all of the other comments here, too! 🧡🖤💜 5mo

I read the first chapter of our new #hashtagbrigaide book this morning and I‘m loving it so far! But the copy I borrowed from Libby has an unforgivably ugly cover, so I‘m pretending I‘m reading out of the fun purple edition I‘ve been seeing around instead.🤫#pemberlittens @BarkingMadRead

Allylu My copy is boring, too. I'm all for pretending to read the purple cover one! #pemberlittens @BarkingMadRead #hashtagbrigade 6mo

It‘s been a while since I participated in a readathon, but I‘m feeling relieved that #20in4 starts tomorrow so I can dip my toes back in gently before #scarathlon starts. This weekend my goal is to get caught up on #LotRChapterADay finish A Passage to India with #hashtagbrigaide and start a new spooky audiobook on the 1st. @Andrew65

Andrew65 Great to have you with us again, good luck 😁 7mo

A Passage to India | E. M. Forster

Question for @jenniferw88 and anyone else who‘s read this before… #Hashtagbrigaide is about 1/4 of the way through now and I‘m excited about reading something written in ‘24 that was already exploring race relations and colonialism, and there are passages of exquisite writing that pop up occasionally and make me happy, BUT most of the time this just makes me angry,⬇️⬇️⬇️

IndoorDame both cause most of our expat characters are so detestable that listening to them talk is painful, and cause it‘s grating to see the ways this is clearly a white foreigner‘s perspective … I‘m wondering if this is going to turn into a story I‘m likely to get lost in, or just continue on explicating life there in the same fashion? 8mo
jenniferw88 I'd suggest trying to get to just after the caves (chapter 17), as I'm not sure. If it helps I can post a comment with spoilers. 8mo
IndoorDame @jenniferw88 thank you!! that definitely helps. I was feeling a bit unmoored in this one and I think that‘s the structure I need to figure out if this is for me 8mo
dabbe Something climatic is going to happen in those caves; I just know it! 😃 8mo
