A Passage to India
A Passage to India | E. M. Forster
150 posts | 144 read | 6 reading | 97 to read
A Passage to India is a novel by English author E. M. Forster set against the backdrop of the British Raj and the Indian independence movement in the 1920s. It was selected as one of the 100 great works of English literature by the Modern Library and won the 1924 James Tait Black Memorial Prize for fiction. The novel is based on Forster's experiences in India. E.M. Forster borrowed the book's title from Walt Whitman's poem of the same name in Leaves of Grass. The story revolves around four characters: Dr. Aziz, his British friend Mr. Cyril Fielding, Mrs. Moore, and Miss Adela Quested. During a trip to the Marabar Caves (modeled on the Barabar Caves of Bihar), Adela accuses Aziz of attempting to assault her. Aziz's trial, and its run-up and aftermath, bring out all the racial tensions and prejudices between indigenous Indians and the British colonists who rule India.

Still catching up on September reviews... Read this with the #pemberlittens
It was an interesting depiction of the British and Indian relationship through colonisation but the characters weren't very likeable and the ending was disappointing. The daily discussions with the #hashtagbrigade were always enjoyable though

The image above sums up my feelings about this book; they were all over the place. Forster's writing is gorgeous as usual, but I had a difficult time caring about any of these characters, British or Indian. The motives behind the characters' actions were vague and noncommittal. The so-called exotic atmosphere was tainted--similar in a way to Joyce's “Araby“. I walked away unenlightened and depressed. Thank goodness for @BarkingMadRead's hashtags!

BarkingMadRead I‘m glad you… finished it 🤣 this one was rough 13mo

I've always loved E. M. Forster's writing. I enjoyed rereading this novel and seeing the commentary from the #PemberLittens and #HashtagBrigade. @BarkingMadRead. It's sad that Forster's observations about racism, classism and sexism still seem so relevant today.

Forster‘s look at British occupied India in the 1920s certainly scratches the surface of culture & caste clauses, not to mention imperial rule and the desire to break free. The novel also examines friendship and betrayal and in a way redemption. Admittedly, I struggled through parts of this…I‘m not as well versed in my history of India, especially during British rule. However, I‘m glad I read this! #PemberLittens #HashtagBrigade #192025 #1924

SamAnne It was a so-so read. But it prompted me to put some India history on my TBR. 14mo

mcctrish I‘m really struggling with finishing this 🤦🏻‍♀️ this week has been awful in teaching land and this has not been the book I can handle at the end of the day 😞 hopefully I knock it off in the car to Toronto this morning. Thank you so much for keeping us on track and focussed with the ##### 14mo
BarkingMadRead @mcctrish safe travels!! 14mo
TheAromaofBooks I feel like this book had some good things to say, but I didn't connect with the story or the characters at all. Instead of coming away feeling like I should give people who “aren't like me“ the benefit of the doubt because they're probably good people, I feel like I shouldn't trust them OR the people who “are like me“ because everyone sucks 😂 14mo
BarkingMadRead @TheAromaofBooks #everybodysucks was basically my takeaway 🤣 14mo
AnnR Beautiful prose but a frustrating story. I agree with prior comments, the ending was meh. I'm glad to have finally read it though. Thank you @BarkingMadRead for leading the discussion. The daily posts and entertaining hashtags definitely helps keep my reading on track. 🙂 (edited) 14mo
Librarybelle Yeah…the ending was a bit lackluster. Thanks, @BarkingMadRead for another great reading month! 14mo
Morr_Books I too agree with what everyone is saying. What was up with all the comments of women being ugly or beautiful? It was so frustrating. I liked A Room with a View and its characters much better. 14mo
Bklover I ended up really loving this book overall. I think mainly because I learned a lot. I knew next to nothing about this place and time in history. The characters all drove me nuts though, and in the end were pretty much unlikeable. @jenniferw88 thank you for all your insights- you were very helpful! 14mo
Bklover Thank you to @BarkingMadRead for again guiding us through another classic. You are probably the only reason I make it through! 14mo
BarkingMadRead It‘s always a pleasure!!! 14mo
Ruthiella Thank you for leading us @BarkingMadRead ! I enjoyed it more than you did, but agree that the end is less than heartwarming. @jenniferw88 I will send you you #Ihateadela card membership soon! 😂 14mo
dabbe I agree with ALL of you! I never would have finished if it wasn't for the always-hilarious #hashtagqueen @BarkingMadRead and the notes from @jenniferw88. I would have BAILED. The word I kept thinking while reading was “awkward.“ Everyone seemed awkward with each other, but I appreciate Forster making both sides have unlikable characters (though colonizing is bad!). Give me ROOM WITH A VIEW over this. Glad I made it through with all of you! 🤗 14mo
willaful I found the book pretty confusing overall, and depressing, but the very end spoke to me. It's sadly still so relevant. 14mo

Bookwormjillk @Morr_Books yes that was weird. Must have been the weather. 14mo
jenniferw88 @Ruthiella I knew what was coming from the start as it's a re-read - I so wanted my first hashtag about Adela to be #ihateadela, but wanted everyone to discover her toxicity for themselves. 14mo
willaful Adela is kind of a perfect Nice White Lady stereotype isn't she. Not because she's malicious, but way too much in her fee fees without noticing what she's doing to others. (edited) 14mo
dabbe @jenniferw88 And I might be dense here, but WHY oh WHY did she blame Aziz in the first place? What was her motive? Will we ever know? I'm having a difficult time understanding her and pretty much everyone else's actions in the story. An awkward read for me at best. 14mo
Daisey @dabbe I completely get the confusion here. When she‘s talking about the incident at one point she can‘t even clearly say whether anything really happened at all, so why blame someone? I really want more specific answers than the British are colonizers and therefore horrible people. 14mo

Bookwormjillk I feel sorry for Aziz and agree he should get paid, but I hate his she‘s too ugly to attack in a cave defense. 14mo
AnnR After a little bit of hopefulness, things sound complicated again. Will Aziz be okay? Will Adela? Should Fielding get in the middle of everything? Hmmm.... I'm not sure. Hopefully Ronny will be out of the picture now. They aren't a good match. 14mo
See All 8 Comments
BarkingMadRead @Bookwormjillk that frustrated me as well! I get that he‘s upset, but that‘s awful! 14mo
TheAromaofBooks I do feel somewhat bad for Adela because I don't think she exactly realized what she was setting off/she was getting so much peer pressure to continue the prosecution even when she tentatively tried to voice doubts. But it also doesn't seem fair for her to just get off without paying anything when Aziz's life has been sent into complete disarray and complications! 14mo
Daisey @Bookwormjillk Yes, that excuse was awful and brought him down in my opinion. Yet, she should still have to at least pay his court fees. 14mo
willaful Definitely less of a fan of Aziz that I was. :-( But I do agree she owes him for what he's been through. 14mo
Morr_Books I agree with what everyone is saying about Aziz. I also really don't know my overall feelings for the Mrs. Moore character. I am not sure I like how upset everyone in the story is about her death when she up and left India, abandoning Aziz, Adela, etc. 14mo

dabbe @TheAromaofBooks That cave really messed with her; it's like she completely lost the will to live after that. I wish Forster would tell us more about why the heck that was such a complete life-altering-to-death experience for her. 14mo
BarbaraBB @jenniferw88 Spot on 🙌🏽 14mo
TheAromaofBooks @dabbe - It just seemed so strange! I understood her having this sort of internal/spiritual shake up, but it seemed a little bizarre that hearing some echoing voices was enough to make her reject all of her religious beliefs and descend into complete apathy!? I felt so bad for her - she didn't have anyone to talk it out with, to offer her reassurances or alternate views. 😕 14mo
dabbe @TheAromaofBooks This has been a strange book for me on the whole: I mean, what was even the point of having her in the book and then killing her offstage? And what the heck is the big deal about an echo? Caves echo; get used to it, people.

The wording has been bizarre in places, too, plus how people talk to each other. But, maybe that's the point. We're supposed to feel weird because they feel weird relating to one another. 🤷‍♀️
14mo
TheAromaofBooks @dabbe - This book has done a great job capturing a general sense of unease and uncertainty, the fragility of a system that assumes everyone “knows their place“ and can't handle anyone deciding they don't like that place. But as a story... it's been somewhat lacking for me 😂 14mo
dabbe @TheAromaofBooks Much better said than what I wrote. Agree 💯! I 😍 A ROOM WITH A VIEW, but this one not so much. 🤣 14mo

#HashtagBrigade I wanted to love this, since I loved the first three books by Forster that I‘ve read. And sometimes I did love it. The language is lush and beautiful. The descriptions of the Hindu and Muslim faiths were entrancing. The prejudices of the different races and religions were very apparent. Except I‘ve never understood racism and religionism. The exchange between Aziz and Mrs. Moore in the mosque and the exchange between (cont)⬇️

CatLass007 Aziz and Mrs. Moore‘s son, Ralph, were almost dreamlike. And I still want to bash everyone‘s heads together for their stupid behavior. Maybe I don‘t understand the mindset of any character in this book. Maybe that‘s what made it so difficult for me to make it through. But it‘s been so many years since I read anything by Forster that I‘m considering re-reading it to see how my perspective has changed. And I‘d try reading more Forster also. 14mo

willaful This was a complicated chapter. Adela is so confused and suggestible -- perhaps normal after being traumatized like this. There's nothing that explains why she ever thought it was Aziz to begin with. She's definitely a very unreliable witness. That's probably not going to help poor Aziz though. :-( 1y
Bklover Loved todays hashtags! You‘re right- Mrs. Moore is definitely crabby. @willaful Yes- no one has said “what makes you think it was Aziz in the first place?”!! 1y

Bookwormjillk Did she ever accuse Aziz or did Ronny just assume? What‘s up with Mrs. Moore? Is she still mad about the cave?? 1y
BarkingMadRead @willaful so true! And they never really say why she thought it was him or who she told! I hope they do! @Bookwormjillk as far as I know, we don‘t know who she told or what she said! I hope that info comes out! 1y
jenniferw88 I think we're meant to assume that she told Miss Derek at the car, and Miss Derek drives her straight to the station. 1y
Morr_Books @jenniferw88 I agree. I also got the impression from this chapter that Adela thought it was Dr Aziz because she assumed he followed her into the cave, so it had to be him. 1y
jenniferw88 @Bookwormjillk Mrs Moore has lost her faith in religion and God and this is draining her emotions. 1y
dabbe @Bookwormjillk Ever since Mrs. Moore experienced the echo, she seems to have adopted an almost existential “why care?“ kind of way of living. 1y
Morr_Books At this point, I feel that Mrs. Moore is partly crabby, because she thinks all this is ridiculous. I'm frustrated because it seems she believes in Dr Aziz's innocence but won't speak won't go public....maybe cuz everyone views her as a crabby old woman...? 1y
jenniferw88 @dabbe exactly! 1y

Then she's thinking all about Ronny and how she doesn't love him and goes into a cave. Throughout the whole book, she's always 👀 for something better. Heat (it was hot) can bring about hallucinations, too. And there's the guide with his head to the side until he runs away. 🤔 (edited) 1y
jenniferw88 And this is why I chose this book for #titlesandtunes #dramaqueen @Cinfhen @BarbaraBB 1y
willaful This is so distressing. I can't bear to think about what's going to happen to Aziz. 1y
BarbaraBB Perfect choice 😀 @jenniferw88 (edited) 1y
CatLass007 As a proudly woke woman, I have the urge to reach through the book and slap everyone until they come to their senses. Sadly, they are products of their time. But I‘ve read other books by Forster and enjoyed them immensely. His prose is lovely, for one thing. And he renders each character so well. 1y
Cinfhen I love all the buddy readers comments! I‘ve never read Forster 1y
Cinfhen Well played @jenniferw88 1y
Bklover Poor Aziz! @dabbe Do you think the guard has his head turned to the side because he did think something was going on? I think Adela is mistaken! 1y
dabbe @Bklover Ooh, that's a great thought! I totally think Adela was mistaken, too! I feel like she's trying to grab the spotlight for some reason. 1y
Bklover @dabbe I think so too! 1y
mcctrish I feel like I‘m in the cave because I have no idea what the hell happened 1y

Bookwormjillk What the heck was that?? 1y
See All 9 Comments
dabbe And what the heck does this mean? Right after Aziz left his cave (after spending only 1 minute in it), comes this line: “When he returned, he found the guard, alone, with HIS HEAD ON ONE SIDE.“ Eh? What? Why? 🤔 1y
willaful I'm scared to read on. 😳 1y
Bklover @dabbe How can your head be on one side?! @BarkingMadRead I thought he just assumed she was in that car- made it easier than assuming she is lost? 1y
Bklover @CatLass007 Yay!! 😊😘 1y
CatLass007 @Bklover I just started listening to the audiobook a couple of days ago. I find it difficult to listen to more than one book at a time. 1y

Bklover She should stress! What a mistake that will be!! 1y
willaful I feel like this can not end well. And I'm worried about Mrs. Moore. 1y
AnnR It seems like both ladies are having mental breakdowns but for different reasons. What a time for it though, especially since Dr. Aziz will certainly get blamed for something as he's #caughtinthemiddle of all this. 1y
dabbe So Aziz gets angry at her so-called-are-you-a-polygamist comment and goes into a cave. She follows in a meandering fashion and also goes into “A“ cave, not “THE“ cave. She's alone perhaps? Where's the guide? #ruhroh all over this chapter's ending. 😱 1y

AnnR Well, no people drama yet and surely there will be #drama. The caves sound majestic but dark and ominous. Maybe this chapter is a foreshadowing of things to come. Ahhh, Dr Aziz. What did you get yourself into? 1y

CatLass007 That is a gorgeous photograph. Looks like someplace I‘d to visit in my next life. I hopefully will get started on A Passage to India today. I had to press the pause button to listening to two books set in India which, coincidentally, have the same narrator. 1y

Today's weather in India, as today's chapter is a good one to talk about it.

The heat makes things quite unbearable & influences behaviour of those who live there.

The British don't appreciate the sun.

Continued Passage, Medici & Paper Chase.
Started & finished The Key to Rebecca.

Cinfhen Is that a new Follett?? Is it part of any of his series??? 1y
jenniferw88 @Cinfhen No, it's not new (1980!) and it's a stand-alone. 1y
Cinfhen Did you like it? Was it a chunkster? 1y
See All 8 Comments
perfectsinner That Follett is on my want to reads list 🙂 1y
Bklover I remember The Key to Rebecca! I loved all his stand-alone books. Most weren‘t chunksters and had more of a thriller vibe if I recall correctly (which means I definitely could be wrong!). I loved The Third Twin, Eye of the Needle, and Whiteout. @Cinfhen 1y
Cinfhen Hahahaha thanks @Bklover I remember Eye of the needle which was definitely a suspenseful read! I have a feeling that his books might feel dated now🤷🏼‍♀️ is it reading that way, Jenny?? 1y
jenniferw88 @Cinfhen definitely a thriller! I wouldn't know if it was dated, I'm afraid. It might not be for you though - dual pov (hero & villain) - villains are anti-semitic - they're spies trying to help Romnel win WW2 in Egypt. 1y

peanutnine I hate that Adela changed her mind back so quickly and didn't even discuss her misgivings with Ronny before jumping into their engagement 1y
See All 12 Comments
willaful @peanutnine as I read it, she didn't actually mean to become engaged, just to take back her definite no, but it got away from her.

Impulsivity seems to be a common point amongst many of the main characters.
(edited) 1y
peanutnine @willaful that's true. She did seem a bit regretful about it at least. Yes impulsivity is a huge theme already 1y
dabbe @peanutnine That brings up the #IdiomInsight from a couple days ago: “Haste makes waste.“ 🤩 1y
dabbe I can't help but see such a parallel between Adela&Ronny and Lucy&Cecil. Not the most compatible of couples, and Ronny/Cecil are revolting. 1y
BarkingMadRead @dabbe omg yes!! 1y
peanutnine @dabbe 💯 perfect comparison! 1y

Up to the semi-colon represents India before the British occupation, it only got confused once we invaded.

Other thoughts:
The accident awakens their feelings of love, or at least lust. #theywillmarryafterall

Aziz - believing in superstition & evil is a defect of the East. The West has advanced because they believe in reason & logic.

dabbe “[O]nce we invaded“ ... yeah, we're great at that, aren't we? 😞

We're engaged; no, we're not; yes, we are. 🤩🤣🤗

Question for @jenniferw88 and anyone else who‘s read this before… #Hashtagbrigaide is about 1/4 of the way through now and I‘m excited about reading something written in ‘24 that was already exploring race relations and colonialism, and there are passages of exquisite writing that pop up occasionally and make me happy, BUT most of the time this just makes me angry,⬇️⬇️⬇️

IndoorDame both cause most of our expat characters are so detestable that listening to them talk is painful, and cause it‘s grating to see the ways this is clearly a white foreigner‘s perspective … I‘m wondering if this is going to turn into a story I‘m likely to get lost in, or just continue on explicating life there in the same fashion? 1y
jenniferw88 I'd suggest trying to get to just after the caves (chapter 17), as I'm not sure. If it helps I can post a comment with spoilers. 1y
IndoorDame @jenniferw88 thank you!! that definitely helps. I was feeling a bit unmoored in this one and I think that‘s the structure I need to figure out if this is for me 1y
dabbe Something climatic is going to happen in those caves; I just know it! 😃 1y

AnnR Things were going okay until party pooper Ronny barged in to check up his mom. Aziz doesn't help any by inflaming the situation. He is just too impulsive and seems a bit full of himself. 1y
BarkingMadRead @AnnR #everypartyneedsapooper 🤣🤣 Ronny is so rude and so clueless 1y
jenniferw88 @AnnR I think he's checking up on Adela more than his Mum - he's thinking she's going to be his wife, whilst his Mum is old - Mrs Moore is basically there to chaperone Adela. 1y
