Wild Nights! | Joyce Carol Oates
post image

Wild Nights is JC Oates' collection of stories on the final days of five American authors (Poe, Dickinson, Samuel Clemens, Henry James & Hemingway). Oates frequently explores the disparity between the public perception & the real life of the author (esp in the case of Clemens & Hemingway where they are performing the parts of Twain & Papa in public). There is also a great deal of ambiguity in each story. The first one, Poe Posthumous could (CONT)

vivastory be interpreted as a science experiment gone horribly wrong. One could also make a compelling argument that the entire story is imagined by Poe as he died from rabies. Then there is the very uncomfortable story about Twain. The collection has a fantastic preface by Oates, which is a sort of essay on the art of the short story. I loved this imaginative collection & agree with the NPR quote on the back, “The triumphant paradox here is that (CONT) (edited) 4w
vivastory in their dying Oates brings these writers ferociously back to life.“ 4w
Tkimsal Oates is sometimes challenging but, for me, always worth the effort! 4w

vivastory @Tkimsal I haven't read her novels, but I love her short stories. 4w
LeahBergen Well, this sounds interesting! 4w
Branwen Okay, Joyce Carol Oates is usually such a hit or miss with me - but your review really makes me want to check this one out! 3w
vivastory @Branwen I've only read her stories which I've had a lot of luck with. Her story The Doll-Master has stuck with me years after reading it. It's one of the creepiest I've read. I also really liked the anthology she edited American Gothic 3w

I didn't mind the first short novel contained in the book, "The Turn of the Screw", but in this case too [...]

giulia.mosna [...] (like with "The Haunting of Hill House") I liked Mike Flanagans show much more than the book it was inspired from. "Washington Square", on the other hand, made me not want to finish the book. 1mo
iaietta Non sapevo ci fosse la serie! Me la guarderò 1mo
giulia.mosna @iaietta la serie ha un titolo diverso dal libro - "The Haunting of Bly Manor". Comunque consigliatissima, una delle mie serie preferite. 1mo

This random grab from my shelves (to free up book space!) is a bizarre little reworking of Henry James‘ The Turn of The Screw. I‘m liking it!

BarbaraBB The shelves that keep on giving 😀 4mo
LeahBergen @BarbaraBB And giving and giving 😆 4mo
batsy That sounds intriguing! 4mo
LeahBergen @batsy It‘s pretty weird, in a Patricia Highsmith sort of way! 4mo

Mehso-so

This was my 4th James and the toughest one to get through. It felt like too much work to figure out the complicated, dare I say shallow, relationships and aspirations of the characters.

BarbaraBB Kudos for reading so many James! 7mo

Second book club book in a row that feels like it wont ever end despite being 190 pages. Maybe its the translation, maybe its the way the dialogue is presented. Maybe its the little boy who i strongly dislied. i dont know. i got to part 3 and said enough. ugh…

What Maisie Knew | Henry James

#BookBinge #involvesDivorce shuttled between a vain father and a selfish mother , Maisie has to raise herself. It doesn‘t get much love here on Litsy , but I remember liking it.written in 1897 , it may be of interest just because nobody wrote about divorce much back then, especially how it might affect the child.

I managed to read two books by Erik Larson this month, both on audio! I think my favorite of his is still Isaac's Storm. And I still want to read Dead Wake. You can count on Larson for a solid narrative non-fiction!
