This book started out strong, but it took a nose dive when it got to the magical part of the book. That section seemed very dated and had a strong Wiccan perspective. As someone who is not Wiccan, I was annoyed with the blanket statements he made where it felt like he was giving the reader a harsh morality lesson. It was so bad that I almost panned the book. If you can get past that sort of thing and not let it get to you, the rest of the book ⬇️

slategreyskies (Cont.) may be worth checking out. I skipped the section on how herbs can align with the planets, and I didn‘t read every herb‘s entry, but what I did read was informative and interesting. He recommends checking out Grieve‘s herbal, if you want to go more in depth, and as I already own her book, I intend to research several of the herbs further there. I‘m giving this ⭐️⭐️⭐️, but it would have been 4 without the frustrating morality lesson. #witchy 10mo

I finished this the other day but apparently forgot to review!! Jabbour explores wats to extend the gardening season via cold frames, row covers, unheated greenhouses, etc. She has a lot of practical information about building and using these items, and about what kinds of veggies will grow in these conditions. The second half of the book is a vegetable reference with tons of different veggies listed by cold/cool/warm needs, and the basics of⬇️

TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) raising them. This isn't really a book for beginning gardeners, although the reference section does have a lot of great information. But if you've been gardening for a year or two and are wishing you could harvest things like kale, salad greens, carrots, etc. all year long, this book is full of color photos, clear instructions, and lots of tips. Mostly this book made me wish that I had a good place to set up grow lights so I can start ⬇ 2y
TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) seeds, but with our small house and no basement, I'm just still not sure where that spot is lol

Happy #bookmail for my birthday! I'm also reading my way through Alys Fowler's backlist. First up: The Thrifty Forager. I've already tried dandelion greens from our yard; a bit bitter, but honestly not as bad as I expected! (I'm also watching Fowler's Edible Garden series. I'm obsessed!) #currentlyreading

I thought the beginning was slow to get moving. The girls are seniors and all 4 best friends. One of them, we are told, will become the president of the US. But which one? I thought the struggles with family, adoption issues, and socioeconomic status were very well done. Also, the marginalization of people with physical disabilities, and handling of mental health issues.

rjsthumbelina However, I really wish the author would have gone harder for the racial issues that just peak out at the surface of the story sometimes. It was a 3 and a half stars for me, but would have been a high 4 if that had been included more in the story. I really liked the romances here as well. It was pretty cool too that the girls' hobbies didn't end up defining their future career paths 4y
rjsthumbelina Read this for the #BNYAbookclub, and also for #herbology for the #OWLSmagicalreadathon (title starts with an 'M') 4y
LiteraryinLawrence I really liked this one but your points make sense for sure. 4y
rjsthumbelina @LiteraryinLititz I enjoyed it, too, for the most part. I just thought that the beginning took too long to really start moving, and that the author really missed an opportunity to talk about racial issues once she had brought it up. It felt almost like those characters were marginalized from the story bc she didn't tackle that after briefly mentioning it 4y

I had no idea that this book was going to be so brash, and not in a good way. I thought the beginning was very boring, but as it got into Bourdain's addictions I started to get more interested. Rather than being about what it's like to be a chef or work in the industry, it's very specific to his experiences. Also, in later chapters he mentions other cooks dying by suicide rather crassly, which was very strange, especially on audiobook

rjsthumbelina I read this for my A in #herbology for the #NEWTs #magicalreadathon 5y

Absolutely my FAV book right now. It‘s a lovely fast but easy read and is divided up into chapters that highlight plants according to their features, such as those that have spines and are know for their physical dangers or those that were traditionally used in food and potions.

Mess ye not with me!

Went to #Jamestown Settlement today for the 3rd Annual Intertribal Powwow. Came home with a shirt, a couple books, a pair of wampum earrings, and a buckskin purse.
