Thanks to @CoffeeNBooks for putting this foodie memoir on my #ReadersRadar 💕I knew very little about Marcus Samuelsson other than he teamed up with Michele Obama for her healthy food/ snack initiative. While Samuelsson avoided the drugs & alcohol that chefs often fall prey to, he did put his time in before acquiring fame & notoriety. Born in #Ethiopia & then adopted by a Swedish couple, Samuelsson was able to blend his cultures through food.

Do you know the story of your favorite bookstore? Nadia tells the story of starting the independent Cairo bookstore, Diwan. They elevated books from being state-run to symbols of independent thought. Using the theme of several sections, from Egyptian history to cooking, she shares the joys and trials of running the store. We learn about her life, but the memoir stays focused more on the store and its books, employees and customers. Enjoyable! 👍🏻

I loved this memoir! It really spoke to me. It has one more #LMPBC reader left in Group P, so I won‘t say too much about it. A really fascinating true story of two women, one Jewish the other not, who quietly but passionately defied the Nazi‘s by both creating & distributing anti-Nazi leaflets and by living their lives as step-sisters but in truth were lovers. I found the writing a little dry, but Suzanne Malherbe & Lucy Schwab were completely compelling. Moving from Paris to Jersey hoping to avoid the German occupation, Suzanne & Lucy soon find the Germans 👇🏼
