As far as a ss collection goes this is VERY READABLE ♥️Every story was full bodied and offered something meaningful and insightful about human nature as well as life in Haiti or as a Haitian immigrant. I‘m generally not a fan of short stories but I appreciated what the author created. Still #BorrowNotBuy #ImpromptuBuddyRead #Pop21 #SomethingAboutForgetting #SwapMe

Megabooks This was my favorite short story collection last year, and you know I read a lot of them, so I‘d venture to say it‘s worth owning if you‘re a fan of short stories, but I realize there are quite a few readers that aren‘t as into them as I am. 3y

Cinfhen Agreed @Megabooks if you‘re a fan of short stories this one is probably worth owning....I really ENJOYED the last two stories @Cathythoughts there really wasn‘t a dud in the entire collection @4thhouseontheleft I just prefer interconnected short stories and this one wasn‘t linked through characters although it was shared through the eyes of Haitians 3y

Cinfhen It all depends on your health provider and the criteria of your age and health history @BarbaraBB so far I don‘t qualify but my health provider said my age bracket may be able to start receiving the vaccine in February. 🤞🏽🤞🏽 3y

I still have a few hours left on my audiobook but I picked up this slim ss collection with my morning coffee and now I can‘t put it down. #ImpromptuBuddyRead It doesn‘t seem to be interconnected ( disappointing) but nevertheless im intrigued with the writing & storytelling. I‘ve read the first 5 stories @Cathythoughts and I‘ve liked 1,4 & 5. Stories 2 & 3 were ok. What are your thoughts so far??

Cathythoughts Oh dear I‘m not up long 😴... must walk the dogs & tidy up a bit etc. Looking forward to having a look ASAP. If you can‘t put it down , well that is saying something good 👏🏻... you‘re a fast reader Cindy .... I hope to have something to report later on 😘 3y

Major book hangover. This is the narrative nonfiction of a family struck down by schizophrenia. 12 children. 6 with debilitating mental illness. It‘s a very honest look at the ups and downs, the failings of a family as well as the failings of a system. My heart broke for the Galvin family. There is hope in their story, but it‘s difficult to notice through all of the pain. #impromptubuddyread @Cinfhen

Reviewsbylola I also appreciated the complete transparency and honesty of the family. Some of them were less honest with themselves than others, which was an understandable defense mechanism. Mimi, as the matriarch, was easy and difficult to understand at the same time. I admired her unwavering support of her sons, although it was at the expense of her healthy children. 4y

And I was absolutely fascinated by the idea of choline during pregnancy being an effective preventative. Reviewsbylola Plus the whole idea of nature v nurture. And the idea of a traumatic event triggering the schizophrenic response. And how that may or may not have been an issue with the Galvins. They all seemed to have traumatic events, so why were only some of them affected? And Lindsay‘s son becomes a focus in a chapter at the end, which was interesting. Did the preventative measures his family took make a difference? @Cinfhen 4y

Reviewsbylola My cousin with schizophrenia also had an event happen as a teenager that we think triggered her schizophrenia so that part really resonated with me. She‘s 45 now and been institutionalized and also jailed. She, like the Galvins, suffers from untenable side affects from her meds so she is quick to go off them. It‘s an endless cycle. @Cinfhen 4y

gradcat There are 2 things that I‘m notoriously stubborn about...if the book is interesting, I will finish. The bad news is I never read anything twice....nor do I go to movies twice, which from what I gather, is anathema for most Littens...Yikes!! Don‘t judge me too harshly! 😂🤣😅😂 5y
