#JumpStart2024 #ReadAway2024

Read for #SundayBuddyRead this book had a lot of promise & their were parts I really enjoyed( (the food, French Riviera setting, glimpse into the art world & learning more about Picasso) but it just was too all over the place with plot lines, characters that were not flushed out, & I felt myself yelling in my head at the author & one of the MCs, Celine) & not enough for it to be a pick & so it gets a so-so for me.⬇️

DebinHawaii … As usual, the discussions led by & extra research of @thebookhippie were what made it fun & interesting & I learned a lot. (Although it didn‘t help me like Picasso any better—misogynistic🐷 it did help me appreciate his talent & understand him more). The author‘s second book The Godmothers tagged below is much better but I‘m not sorry we read this one even if it wasn‘t a hit. If you have read it (spoiler if you have not) I just have to say… ⬇️ (edited) 3mo
DebinHawaii #JusticeForJulie 😡🥺😢 she got a raw deal as a character! 3mo

#SUNDAYBUDDYREAD

Arthur horrid from day one 🤢🙄😡and the twins are awful
The mom dies

AmyG What was sad is that the Mom had a wonderful life until her dad was killed. All downhill from there. 3mo
BarkingMadRead Ugh those twins are the actual worst! I hate them! 3mo
Librarybelle The twins are monsters! I just cannot even imagine growing up with them. 3mo

Karisa Felt like the bad guys in a fairytale those three. Ondine had tried to warn daughter Julie but couldn‘t. The whole Julie plot line was just so sad. 3mo
mcctrish @Karisa absolutely fairy tale vibes which could have been a whole other story in itself 3mo
Karisa @mcctrish Yes! It felt like a whole other book those parts 3mo
IndoorDame The twins even worse than I expected! If it was just about the money they wouldnt‘ve tried to keep her from the funeral, but they‘re looking to hurt her just for the sake of it. 3mo
Read4life I couldn‘t imagine growing up with the twins or ever acting half as horrible as they do. Truly evil. 3mo
Larkken @Karisa @mcctrish yes! Totally like a different book. So jarring how different Julie was handled vs the mother or the daughter, like she had absolutely no agency and that was ok bc she had a child so Celine deserves a happy ending instead? Just gah to me. 3mo
mcctrish @Read4life the whole Julie story line is extreme - she‘s a ‘bastard‘, her father dies, she‘s sexually abused, she marries an abuser and then is absused by her step children ( is this a Colleen Hoover novel?!) 3mo
Karisa @Larkken You‘re right! If we are suspending disbelief already, why not a happy ending for Julie? The step kids would have happily turned her carehome bill over to Celine. Celine could‘ve found the best nurses and care in France… why not? Julie deserved it too 3mo
Larkken @Karisa 💯😭 3mo
vlwelser I still feel really bad for Julie. And those twins are wretched. 3mo
DebinHawaii #justiceforjulie is all I have to say! 🤬 3mo
vonnie862 Just terrible. What I can't fathom is how the twins could get away with everything they did when they were not blood related with Julie. How can they legally keep her away from her actual daughter? 3mo
julieclair @vonnie862 I wondered the same thing. I don‘t think they could legally keep Celine from visiting Julie. 3mo
julieclair @Karisa @mcctrish Yes about the fairy tale vibes. Arthur and the twins were so ridiculously bad they were like caricatures of themselves. 3mo
mollyrotondo @vonnie862 I also wondered this. Did their father give them power of attorney over everything including Julie? Maybe. Julie was a total victim from day one and it didn‘t have to be that way. She had such a loving mother and father but her character always seemed to be a dud even before Luc died. Not sure why Julie couldn‘t have gone with Celine to find out about the painting. It should have been a mother/daughter adventure. 3mo
TheBookHippie @julieclair I have relatives like this -seeing it in print was like ahhhh she has or knows ppl like this too. 😵‍💫 3mo
TheBookHippie @vonnie862 they can. People do it alll the time. When I was in nursing homes I saw it A LOT. 3mo
TheBookHippie @mollyrotondo it‘s like Julie just gave up. So sad. 3mo
mollyrotondo @TheBookHippie she did give up! And it sucks because she could have been a strong character with parents like Ondine and Luc. Not sure why Julie was the lost cause in the story. 3mo
julieclair @TheBookHippie It‘s so sad that families can be so horrible to each other. Greed and the desire to control are powerful emotions. 3mo
