#200PnPcovers @CrowCAH @mabell Let‘s see if I can catch up on what were supposed to be daily posts…when #parents were raising gentle ladies, they were accomplished if they could play #music. Another acceptable past time was reading #novels - but not too much and nothing too intellectual! In The Other Bennet Sister Mary much prefers “smart” books and her mother, who reads novels, disapproves.

CrowCAH Woohoo, three down in one post! 👍🏻😁 2y

All the #parents (or at least Mrs. Bennet) in #Pride & #Prejudice want is for their daughters to receive #proposals from #rich men.

My favorite story from this book! And it covers a few prompts 😉

Jane was helping to nurse her brother through a nasty illness when one of his doctors, who also attended the Prince Regent [ruling in place of his #parents] realised that Jane was the author of #Pride and Prejudice. One day he told Jane that the Prince ‘often‘ read her #novels and ‘kept a set in every one of his residences.‘ Accordingly he informed the Prince she was in London. ⬇️

mabell His Royal Highness asked the librarian of Carlton House, James Stanier Clarke, to call on her. Clarke duly appeared the next day and invited Jane to Carlton House, so that he could show her ‘the library and other apartments, and pay her every possible attention.‘ Although Jane disapproved of the Prince Regent‘s immoral lifestyle [in spite of her #prejudice], she felt unable to turn down this high honour [#proposal]. 2y
mabell During her visit, Clarke declared that the Prince had given her permission to dedicate her next novel (Emma) to him, and upon publication Austen‘s publisher, John Murray, sent the Prince a handsome copy of Emma for his library. #200PnPcovers 2y
LeahBergen Whenever I open Emma and see that dedication I think how she was “bullied” into it. 😆 2y
CrowCAH I agree @LeahBergen . But I guess it‘s not bad to have the Prince Regent as a sponsor! 2y
mabell @LeahBergen @CrowCAH Not exactly a glowing dedication 😆😂 2y

Day 21. Mr. and Mrs. Bennet, raising five single daughters in the Regency era. I‘m sure they did their best.

Day 21: #Parents

Silhouette portraits of Jane Austen‘s parents.

Can I just say that I‘m happy these are no longer in vogue? I wouldn‘t relish my own beaky nose and weak chin handed down for posterity. 🤣🤣

Lindy 😂 2y
RaeLovesToRead Oh god, me too, my silhouette would be dreadful 🤣🤣 I spend a lot of effort trying not to be looked at from the side, haha 2y

DivineDiana Agree! 😂 2y
AWahle I remember doing these in elementary school but mom must have thrown them out. The teacher traced each student‘s silhouette using a projector and then we had to cut them & glue them on card stock. 2y
CrowCAH Same. Could I have a 45 degree angle instead?! Lol 2y
LeahBergen @RaeLovesToRead @CrowCAH Exactly! I dash around and angle myself for group photos. 🤣🤣 2y
LeahBergen @merelybookish Gah, don‘t remind me of my waddle! 🤣 2y
LeahBergen @AWahle That‘s so cool! I remember that they used to do them at some small fairs when I was a kid. 2y

I actually really like most of the #parents in the original P&P and have an especial soft spot for Mr. Bennet, even though he's a terrible provider and can be a bit of a dick. Consequently, I couldn't DEAL with this variation that turns Mr. B. into a complete and total liar.

Reynolds gives us a semi-plausible set-up for Darcy & Elizabeth to be stranded together for a couple of days. D wants to marry E immediately to save her reputation, but E ⬇

TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) does think that's necessary so D makes her promise to let him know if rumors start flying and she says she will. But when the rumors DO start flying, Mr. B. literally refuses to let E contact D! Mr. B even goes so far as to SAY he is taking E's letter to D, and then DOESN'T and comes back and tells E that D blew her off and has no interest in her. It literally DID NOT MAKE SENSE. There's also this incredibly creepy scene where when D&E ⬇ 2y
TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) are coming back from their snowed-in cabin they pass the inn and a girl is literally BEING RAPED BY SOLDIERS and E is like “oh there isn't anything you can do because there are like ten of them and they're all drunk“ - so they leave her there?!?! It was absolutely horrific and I couldn't imagine EITHER of these characters actually saying that/leaving this girl to her fate. It was extra enraging because it had basically nothing to do with⬇ 2y
TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) the rest of the story?! Like why is this scene even here??

Despite being considered one of the foundational writers of JAFF, I've always personally found Reynolds to be a bit of a mixed bag, and this one was definitely a miss for me!

mabell Yikes. It doesn‘t sound like there is much to like about it! Just the change in Mr. Bennett would be enough to ruin it for me! What was his motivation for the deception? 2y
CrowCAH Gosh yes. I believe both E and D would try to help the girl. They‘re not that callous. 2y
MaureenMc That‘s a hard pass from me. 🙅🏻‍♀️ 2y
TheAromaofBooks @mabell - Supposedly he doesn't believe E will be happy with D, so he thinks he's justified in his lies - because later D comes to check on E and Mr. B lies then! Even though E tells him that D didn't do anything inappropriate when they were stranded, Mr. B refuses to believe her and thinks she was seduced and that that's the only reason D said he would marry her. The whole part where Mr. B refuses to believe his daughter was also super annoying. 2y
mabell What a great father 😆😆 2y
