Gone Girl
Gone Girl | Gillian Flynn
Marriage can be a real killer. One of the most critically acclaimed suspense writers of our time, New York Times bestseller Gillian Flynn takes that statement to its darkest place in this unputdownable masterpiece about a marriage gone terribly, terribly wrong. The Chicago Tribune proclaimed that her work draws you in and keeps you reading with the force of a pure but nasty addiction. Gone Girls toxic mix of sharp-edged wit and deliciously chilling prose creates a nerve-fraying thriller that confounds you at every turn. On a warm summer morning in North Carthage, Missouri, it is Nick and Amy Dunnes fifth wedding anniversary. Presents are being wrapped and reservations are being made when Nicks clever and beautiful wife disappears from their rented McMansion on the Mississippi River. Husband-of-the-Year Nick isnt doing himself any favors with cringe-worthy daydreams about the slope and shape of his wifes head, but passages from Amy's diary reveal the alpha-girl perfectionist could have put anyone dangerously on edge. Under mounting pressure from the police and the mediaas well as Amys fiercely doting parentsthe town golden boy parades an endless series of lies, deceits, and inappropriate behavior. Nick is oddly evasive, and hes definitely bitterbut is he really a killer? As the cops close in, every couple in town is soon wondering how well they know the one that they love. With his twin sister, Margo, at his side, Nick stands by his innocence. Trouble is, if Nick didnt do it, where is that beautiful wife? And what was in that silvery gift box hidden in the back of her bedroom closet? With her razor-sharp writing and trademark psychological insight, Gillian Flynn delivers a fast-paced, devilishly dark, and ingeniously plotted thriller that confirms her status as one of the hottest writers around.

Ok, two loose ends that I didn‘t catch being addressed.

1. Can Desi‘s mom or someone else prove he wasn‘t with Amy on July 5th?

2. What about that mysterious guy from the casino? Casinos are full of surveillance and that would put a hole in Amy‘s story.

What do you think?

Without giving anything away, I was ready to stop this book bc both narrators were so unlikable. I knew I shouldn‘t give up bc I‘ve enjoyed all of Flynn‘s other books. One of the narrators redeems themselves in the second part. I was hoping something like this would happen. Well played, Flynn. 😆 #libby

Libby says I‘m 17% into this one and man, the two main characters, and even the sister, are so unlikable. They‘re snooty and hate women. They think they‘re smarter/better than the small town people around them. Are they written to be so unlikable?

cherinium Yeah, I believe that was the goal. 7d

I was a little bit let down by this story. Unfortunately the major twist that happens about half way through was spoiled for me, so I knew that was coming. But I thought, this book is so raved about, there MUST be lots more twists throughout, to keep me guessing until the end, but there wasn't anything. I liked the story and the writing, I just wished that the author had tried to lead us astray some more in the second half.

It takes creativity and imagination to invent such characters and such a relationship. That‘s why it ended up as “So-So” for me.

Honestly, all the rest is just „Pan“. Mostly I saw it all coming. For me, there is too much of everything to be really entertaining. Soon, it‘s clear that Flynn does it all just done for the effect. I wanted to see how it ends (disappointing) but the way to there wasn‘t thrilling.

I like my books a bit more credible.

Come-read-with-me @Buechersuechtling Thanks for this review! I really liked the book but my husband had your reaction. That‘s what is so great about Litsy - you get to see what appeals/doesn‘t appeal to many readers. I thought this was her strongest book, but again my husband disagreed. Maybe you‘d like one of her other ones? Thanks for giving your honest review. 👍🏻 2mo

Will there appear any not-messed-up, not-strange characters❓🤔

Don‘t get me wrong. It‘s not uninteresting. But it‘s not as gripping as I expected it to be from the title.

Maybe I‘m more a mainstream-girl than I thought. In a way this book is quite uncommon. I should like that but instead I‘m constantly asking myself why anyone would want, really _want_ to lead such a relationship.

Audiodinner.

I like it better now that, at approximately hour 3, not every second sentence tells about the disharmony in Amy‘s and Nick‘s relationship.

I think Nick describes her quite appropriate when he says that most things she did, she did for her own‘s sake, out of self-centered reasons.

But, honestly, he hisself is a pretty strange duck, too. He does everything to dig a hole for hisself and he knows this quite well.

Started this audiobook yesterday and today was surprised how long it is: almost 13 hours.

I think I like it so far. The changes of perspective between him and her make it interesting but I cannot keep myself from thinking in what kind of dysfunctional, at last for me, relationship/marriage they both are living. I really couldn‘t do that, live together with someone I love and then (seemingly) quarrel constantly for the next five years.

Freespirit I found that annoying too....not a fan 3mo

Of course, since I chose not to read this until now, I was unable to avoid spoilers and knew the twist, but it was still interesting looking at the psychology of the characters. Thrillers are always a good choice for the hospital, as they keep your interest but aren‘t too deep for the most part.

This is one of the craziest books I have ever read, but I mean that in the best way possible. Though no character is completely likable, there is a clear protagonist and antagonist, and it is so fun to watch them play off one another. This was a heck of a ride and one of the best books I‘ve read in a long time.

#audiogardening with a new book today...still at the beginning but I‘m quickly getting the sense the underlying theme is “b!tches be crazy”. 🤨 Kinda over the whole trope of female characters saying “I know, I‘m acting like a girl” as if acting like a girl is inherently a bad thing. But oooo, wow, a female character said it so she‘s not like “other” girls! How cool and edgy. 🤮

I‘m way behind the bandwagon on this one because, A) I had to save up to buy it. B) My library hold took this long to go through. Or C) I guess I feel like I‘m too cool to read books when they are being hyped up. The correct answer is C. Ugh. Now I sound like Amy....👇

#Booked2019 | #BookToMovie

📷: Libby

LiterRohde But speaking of Amy, the narrators of this book are completely unreliable. The characters are unlikable, if not horrible, people. The writing was really good. I read for hours at a time. One of my favorite parts of the author‘s style was the one-liners and descriptions that made me sit up and take notice, and even laugh (Midwesterners and red Solo cups, anyone?). The plot is somewhat predictable. And I really liked it....👇 6mo
LiterRohde I tend to like books with unreliable narrators and complex flawed characters (or sympathetic villains). It just feels somehow more real to me. So no surprise there. What did surprise me a little was how much I enjoyed being right there with the author, or even a step ahead, right from the start....👇 6mo
LiterRohde I tend toward books that ask you to go along for the ride. The kind of book you put together in hindsight even though in the moment you were totally confused or surprised. I think Gone Girl worked for me because it was like watching a train wreck in slow motion - you know from the word ‘go‘ that it is going to be bad but you can‘t help but watch how it all unfolds....👇 (edited) 6mo
See All 20 Comments
LiterRohde And I like how it ultimately unfolded. I don‘t think there is any other way it could have ended given the character dynamics of the rest of the book....👇 6mo
LiterRohde Quotes like this, “Hell, at this point, I can‘t imagine my story without Amy. She is my forever antagonist. We are one long frightening climax,” and especially this, “We're a sick, fucking toxic Möbius strip, Amy. We complete each other in the nastiest, ugliest possible way,” prove to me that a tidier ending would betray the spirit of the book. So, now that you have my thoughts, if you, like Amy, would like to get in the last word, comment below. 6mo
Cinfhen Brilliant review and reminder why this book was so f%cking delicious!!! Still one of my favorite thrillers ever!! All the praises for Gillian Flynn🙌🏻 6mo

LiterRohde @Cinfhen It‘s too bad that Litsy seems to be stalling out. I really like the singular focus of book stuff, without a lot of the other crap you get on FB and Twitter. I‘ve seen a little bit of it, but not much, and thankfully it doesn‘t seem very popular. 6mo
