⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ I wanted something light and not demanding while working around the house and yard over the weekend and this fit the bill. History of the show and in-depth summaries and reviews of several important episodes. It was perfectly pleasant and a nice reminder of the warm fuzzies I got from watching the show a couple of years ago.

Suet624 Such a great show 2w
monalyisha I‘d been watching with my husband for a while and quietly drooling over Brett Goldstein when my husband piped up, out of nowhere, “Roy Kent is so weird looking.” 😅 Agree to disagree, hubs. 😂🔥🌶️ 2w

AmyG @monalyisha Have you seen Shrinking? Brett is wonderful in that. No, Roy isn‘t remotely weird looking. 😉 (edited) 2w
fredthemoose @monalyisha 😂 💯 Absolutely agree to disagree… Roy Kent is a babe. 🔥 2w
monalyisha @AmyG We‘re not caught up but that‘s a great show, too! 2w

Kid me loved this actor, watched his version of TV Superman as a little girl and remained a lifelong fan ever since. This was one of the first shows I became a fan of without my brother to snuggle up to while we watched.

With the current hate infused climate of this Administration. This feels like a betrayal.

And the fact that Dean Cain's biological father is Japanese! How could he do to my people what was done to his?

👇🏼

AnnCrystal It may seem silly, Dean Cain is just an actor who was cast to play a part. Yet, it's so much more.

As a American BORN Indigenous and Chicana, there came a time while growing up when I had to learn about how the heroes that I was supposed to admire as an American were not so heroic to my ancestors. Many were my ancestors villains.

Random Examples:
Abraham Lincoln
Davy Crockett
Bat Masterson
Columbus
👇🏼
(edited) 2w
AnnCrystal
This list is practically endless...

Discovering the truth from my cultural prospective, it felt like betrayal.

It wasn't easy to learn about my own cultural Heroes while growing up, therefore, the Superheroes from pop culture were adopted.

Actors and actresses bring characters into reality. Especially for children, superheroes and superheroines come alive when they see these characters on the screen.

👇🏼
(edited) 2w
AnnCrystal I just keep wondering, how many kids are going to see this news about Dean Cain and (whether they've seen his version of Superman or not) become frightened about why Superman has joined those who are terrorizing our communities. How many children are going to wonder if their brown skin automatically makes them bad?

dabbe #gulp 😪 I can't even imagine your and your ancestors' pain. Your words brought me to my knees. 💙✊🏻💙 2w
TheBookHippie I AM SO TIRED. 2w
RamsFan1963 I mainly watched Lois & Clark for Terry Hatcher, but I did like Dean Cain's Superman. His move to being a Trumpster is very disappointing and disheartening. 2w
AnnCrystal 🫂 Thank You @dabbe I'm annoyed at myself for allowing this to infuriate me so intensely. Yet I can't stop fearing for the children. They need the magic of superheroes during these dark times 😢. ✊🏼🦸‍♂️💖. 2w
AnnCrystal @TheBookHippie the rage over this has totally exhausted me 🥺✊🏼🦸‍♂️💖. 2w
TheBookHippie @AnnCrystal I actually don‘t believe in hell… but for these folks… there‘s a special hell for people who hurt children. Just unreal the cruelty. 2w
AnnCrystal @RamsFan1963 📺 Terry Hatcher would have been my brother's reason for watching too 👏🏼😉👌🏼...and Dean Cain is truly disappointing indeed ✊🏼🦸‍♂️💫. 2w
AnnCrystal @TheBookHippie 👏🏼😎 Truth ✊🏼😉💝....👹. (edited) 2w
dabbe @AnnCrystal You have no reason to be annoyed. You are fighting the good fight with everything you have. Keep doing so because this country needs it. 💙🩵💙 2w
JenlovesJT47 How disappointing 😌. I always thought he was so cute (not that that has anything to do with why I‘m disappointed, just saying). 2w
AnnCrystal 😘 @dabbe Thank You 🫂💝 We are all going to be needed to Vote for change ✊🏼🦅🌟💖💖💖. 2w
AnnCrystal @JenlovesJT47 😂👌🏼 I totally understand. The funny thing, is that for a long time, I mistakingly believed that he was Mexican... (edited) 2w
TheBookHippie @AnnCrystal he is Japanese yes? 2w
mcctrish When I read this news I was dumbfounded! I loved the Superman show he and Terry Hatcher put on the small screen. How stupid does a person have to be to think Ice is the solution? To use what little star power he has left to make this his message? He‘s pathetic and evil 2w
AnnCrystal @TheBookHippie correct, Dean Cain's biological father was Japanese, Roger Tanaka. 2w
JenlovesJT47 It seems to me he‘s desperately trying to be relevant. Otherwise I really can‘t figure it out. 🤯 2w
AnnCrystal @mcctrish Truth! This is truly Evil to not consider the children. I hope Marvel counters a move to somehow show brown-skin kids that Superman doesn't hate them ✊🏼🦸‍♂️💖. 2w
AnnCrystal @JenlovesJT47 it's perplexing and cruel 😢✊🏼🦸‍♂️💖. 2w
TheBookHippie @AnnCrystal How foolish. Spits in the face of his ancestry. 2w
ncsufoxes He‘s the opposite of what the current Superman movie is about (I haven‘t seen it but from what people have said it made maga angry so I‘m assuming it‘s about humanity & the opposite of the current resident in office). These people are all so exhausting. 2w
mariaku21 This was sooooo disappointing to know it's true and then to know he literally made a video bout it with him sounding like a recruiter for ICE..😔😮‍💨 2w
Bookwomble 😮‍💨 2w
Bookwomble Superman? The alien who illegally entered the USA as a child refugee from a war-torn, ecological catastrophe? The immigrant child who grew up to make incredible contributions to his adoptive country? That Superman? 🤔💭🦸 2w
AnnCrystal @TheBookHippie Exactly! He is insulting his Ancestors even more than his fans. I wonder if he knows about his father's cultural history. Perhaps he was only raised to know his mother's ancestry or doesn't even know what happened here during WW2??

🤔💖.
(edited) 2w
AnnCrystal @ncsufoxes 👏🏼🦸‍♂️ I really truly hope to have the opportunity to watch the new Superman one day. The previews are fantastic and I can glimpse why it would anger some 👏🏼😉👌🏼. People should show up to protest Little (t) wearing Superman T-shirts ✊🏼🦸‍♂️💖. (edited) 2w
AnnCrystal @mariaku21 🥺 what?? I haven't seen that...I probably don't want to view that! I'm already way too upset with this villain. I'm really hoping Marvel somehow spotlights their newest Superman for the kids to focus on ✊🏼🦸‍♂️💖. 2w
AnnCrystal @Bookwomble 👏🏼😉👍🏼 that's the one 😂. Terrible that Dean Cain seemingly learned nothing from the values this Character represents ✊🏼🦸‍♂️💫. 2w
Bookwomble @AnnCrystal Cain never met his biological father, and has spoken disparagingly about him, so at the risk of being an armchair analyst, perhaps there's some psychological projection and transference happening for him. He might be well advised to seek counselling. 2w
AnnCrystal @Bookwomble I didn't know about that...thank you for sharing this.

🤔 I absolutely 🤬 my father's family, but I love the Chicana heritage. Perhaps if Dean Cain allowed himself to experience his Japanese half, he would discover a love for the culture. The Japanese culture is just as beautiful as his English, French-Canadian, Irish, and Welsh heritages.
2w
Amiable I agree with @JenlovesJT47 — I think this is him trying to claw his way back into the national conversation. Because when was the last time Dean Cain was relevant? He‘s a desperate, despicable, small-minded little man. Some may even call him… deplorable. 🤨 2w
AnnCrystal @Amiable 👏🏼🥺 and at a time when we need more Superheroes, not more wannabe villains. ✊🏼🦸‍♂️💖. 2w
Bookwomble @AnnCrystal Cain Heritages: Japanese (immigrant) ??, English (immigrant) ???????, French (immigrant) ??, Canadian (immigrant) ??, Irish (immigrant) ??, Welsh (immigrant) ??????? = "Keep immigrants out of USA ??" ?? 2w
Butterfinger I get how you feel. I remember being depressed when I found out Lincoln was not as heroic as we were lead to believe. Dean Cain has lost so many fans over this, and those of us who care will make sure to teach ALL children the value and voice they deserve. 2w
AnnCrystal @Bookwomble 👏🏼😂 it's truly sad and perplexing when those who hate do not realize this fact. Even Little t's mother was born in Scotland in 1912. His mother, Mary Anne MacLeod immigrated to America.

Most of my ancestry originated right here (excluding the Spanish bits). Yet I and my American Indigenous mom are in danger everytime we venture out and about because we were born brown upon our own land ✊🏼🤬 ✊🏼🐻💫.
(edited) 2w
AnnCrystal @Butterfinger it's truly sad, how difficult it is to learn the truth about our history.

👏🏼🥲 And truth! We all must continue to teach our Children “true“ American values. Together we can erase hatred ✊🏼🦅✌🏼🦸‍♂️💖.
2w
IriDas I loved Lois and Clark, too. It was a quirky little show that aged well. But Dean Cain lost me several years ago with his religious bigotry and conservatism. This does not surprise me. 2w
AnnCrystal @IriDas 👏🏼😉👍🏼 I make the worst fan, I really don't stay informed about those who I become a fan of...I mean, I rarely do research, I often just encounter info bits by accident. After this, I plan on trying to become more informed. If someone seemingly holds values of prejudice, hatred, or etc. they don't deserve my time or money as their fan. ✊🏼🦅✌🏼💝. (edited) 2w

Sadly dnf'ing this one that I bought years ago and apparently waited too long to read. Maybe I gave up before the subjects got deep but what I did read was just the slight petty kind of judgments told with flair and wit sure, but I expected more. I follow Luvvie across social media and she's a great writer and thinker - this one just didn't do it for me.

A fascinating look at the endlessly renewing, creative, flawed entity that is Marvel comics.
Howe does a great job of moving the historical account from its first moments, through the decades, hitting on pivotal people, creations and events, offering a lot of context with details of the comic book industry throughout the years, and the company's restructuring along that path, how Marvel shaped and was shaped, 1/?

Robotswithpersonality 2/? by the market, trends and traditions, the evolving zeitgeist.
I appreciate the honesty inherent in acknowledging the 'he said, she said, they said' when speaking of the early years, filtered through acrimony, law suits, careers that went awry. Also the ongoing attention paid to the tension between artists and writers looking for fulfilling, creative work over which they retained creative control and maybe even ownership, which could be

It's no secret at this point that the artists, for decades, and even to this day, struggle to retain ownership of their work, even creative control, but it turns out the reality is even messier,
1mo
Robotswithpersonality 4/? given the Marvel method of early days, given the endless back and forth with editors and executives. The revolving door to DC and independent comics and back again of so many contributors who were exhausted and embittered by corporate responses to the seemingly unsolvable problems of remaining relevant and retail-able to the buying public.
What I 'Marvel' at is honestly how the company stayed in business long enough to become an IP farm for

Howe doesn't hesitate to lay out the dirty laundry in the text and the footnotes, but it doesn't feel salacious, rather that it is trying to honour the fact that amongst groundbreaking imagination and epic highs and lows of productivity, commercial success and critical acclaim, there was a constantly disorganized or constantly reorganized hierarchy trying to stay one step ahead of eternally toxic office politics and owner

Aside from the truly wild moments excerpted from the psychedelic 60s, stoned 70s, and coked out 80s, what truly amused me were the times when Howe went direct to reader with the shade, no disgruntled intermediary required. There are evidently comic book moments known as just plain bad, and he does not hold back. 💅🏼

Robotswithpersonality 7/7 I hope things continue to improve for the art and the people involved.
Now I really, really want to read a history of DC comics.

I found this interesting, though I think it could've been a bit shorter by sometimes just saying “just as with XYZ“ instead of repeating the whole thing...

It's thorough and well-sourced (50 pages of numbered endnotes), and includes examples of various advertising images etc etc to illustrate points.

It's sort of my 3/5 stars: “liked it, but...“

Just need a Latinx author or rep to complete the card!

Any recommendations Litsy??

I enjoy mostly science fiction and literary fiction, things I don‘t enjoy are young adult and romance - but find queer books with it more tolerable 😛.

ChaoticMissAdventures If you like YA I highly recommend anything by Aiden Thomas. I have enjoyed all his books Cemetery Boys might be my favorite. I have been meaning to read The Town of Babylon that a friend keeps recommending. Or I loved this one 1mo
Kitta @ChaoticMissAdventures oh my friend just recommended Cemetery boys and the Sunbearer Trials to me! Haha great minds. 1mo
ChaoticMissAdventures @Kitta he is awesome! He lives in my hometown and I see him often at book events, just the nicest person 😍. But his books are very YA so just depends on your reading preferences. 1mo
See All 27 Comments
monalyisha If you do audiobooks, I absolutely loved this one! 1mo
monalyisha Another option (which I read in print). 1mo
Kitta @ChaoticMissAdventures oh that‘s so cool! I‘m leaning towards Sunbearer trials, I‘m not a huge YA fan though so I‘ll have a look around at what else is out there as well. 1mo
Kitta @monalyisha I don‘t deal well with audio but I‘ll look into the other one! Thanks! 1mo
Kitta @monalyisha oh I own a copy of the Poet x. Maybe I should read that? 1mo
monalyisha That would work! The Poet X is my second favorite of hers (and it was my introduction to her writing). 💖 1mo
monalyisha I don‘t know how MUCH lgbtq rep there is, and I don‘t remember it being the focus, but it‘s not absent. 1mo
willaful I like a lot of Anna-Marie McLemore's books, especially When the Moon Was Ours. 1mo
monalyisha Her other title that I mentioned exists in print, too. I just prefer her books as audio because she reads them herself. Clap When You Land has an additional narrator, as well, and The Poet X features spoken word poetry so it‘s cool to hear it as it was meant to be performed. But that‘s not to say that they wouldn‘t be enjoyable as hard copies! 1mo
BookmarkTavern Chiming in to also recommend Aiden Thomas! Cemetery Boys and Lost in the Never Woods we‘re both great! 1mo
Liz_M Carmen Maria Machado? I loved In the Dream House. Cantoras by Carolina De Robertis was also good.
1mo
Kitta @monalyisha it can just be an LGBTQ author as well (is she LGBTQ?), it doesn‘t need to be the main focus so I‘ll probably read that! Thanks. 1mo
Kitta @lil1inblue oooh yes that look good thanks!! 1mo
Kitta @Liz_M oof Dream House sounds intense and I was in a queer abusive relationship until we spit during the pandemic. Might be too intense for me right now but I‘ll keep it in mind. It sounds really good. 1mo
Kitta @Liz_M wow Cantoras sounds amazing, added to the list! 1mo
Kitta @monalyisha good to know! I just suck at listening to audiobooks. I‘ve tried 3 times and either I hate the narrator, get lost and distracted or fall asleep. lol. 1mo
Kitta @willaful oh wow sounds interesting! Thanks for the rec! 1mo
willaful LOL, I just noticed you said you don't like YA and romance which of course is exactly what I recc'd. 🤦🏻‍♀️

1mo
Kitta @willaful haha its okay a lot of people skipped that part of the post and recommended YA and romance. I love getting input either way and will pass the suggestion on to one of my best friends who loves that stuff. 1mo
monalyisha @Kitta I‘m not sure! I know she‘s said, “Every single one of my books has a character who‘s queer, and their queerness isn‘t the point of that character. That isn‘t the only reason they‘re there. It‘s not a plot point. It‘s just that is the world and I try to give joy and full arcs for that.” 1mo
Kitta @monalyisha oh I like that though, not making queerness a plot point is important to me! I‘ll read it either way and decide if it counts for the LGBTQIA book bingo challenge when I‘m done. 1mo
Kenyazero 🤩 I hope some of these recs work for you! 1mo
Kitta @Kenyazero yes some should do! 1mo
