Les Misrables | Victor Hugo

Would love to read @ChrisBohjalian ‘s afterward!

#ReadLesMis

***The only completely unabridged paperback edition*** of Victor Hugo‘s masterpiece—a sweeping tale of love, loss, valor, & passion.
🇫🇷 Afterword by Chris Bohjalian 🇫🇷
Translated by Lee Fahnestock and Norman MacAfee
Introduction by Lee Fahnestock
Penguin Random House Signet Classics

TheBookHippie Far as I know it is. 🤷🏻‍♀️ 5d
TheBookHippie I like signets but the print is too small. I think our edition is not considered paperback … weird as that sounds. 5d
tpixie @TheBookHippie I think you are right. Ours has higher quality paper, bigger font, and extra annotations. (edited) 5d

TheBookHippie @tpixie ours is also published after the signet. 5d
tpixie @TheBookHippie yes as I‘m looking into this more I see that. I just got a new email from penguin advertising this edition. On further review, I saw that it was published earlier. (edited) 5d
dabbe This one is the first one I tried to read and completely bailed. The font was ridiculously small, and the translation (IMHO) was too pedantic. #hailthebail 💚🤍♥️ 5d
tpixie @dabbe glad we found the Penguin Classic Deluxe Edition 💙🤍❤️ 4d
dabbe @tpixie Amen, sista! 💙🤍♥️ 4d
TheBookHippie @dabbe 💯💯💯 the translation IMO was condesending. Generally signet it good for Shakespeare reference but now Penguin had a good format for those as well. 2d
tpixie @TheBookHippie I love Penguin Classics versions! 2d
TheBookHippie @tpixie honestly we need to own them all 🙃♥️🙌🏼 2d

#Read2025 #Wardens2025 #HashtagBrigade #ReadLesMis

By far the longest book I‘ve ever read, followed closely by ‘It‘. This was my 2nd attempt; I‘m happy & proud of myself for sticking with it. I really enjoyed it, even if some parts dragged on or were heavier with info. That being said, they helped with the understanding of situations, context and characters

PurpleyPumpkin Congratulations! Well done!👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽 2w

CoverToCoverGirl Congrats! Well done. Not a book I‘ve read yet. 2w
DieAReader @CoverToCoverGirl 😊Thanks. It was very doable as a chapter a day read. 2w
CoverToCoverGirl @DieAReader I‘m hoping to attempt Moby Dick in 2026… but I‘m not sure if I‘ll be successful. 2w
DieAReader @CoverToCoverGirl 🤞🏻🤓You can do it!! 2w

#readlesmis @TheBookHippie

First published in 1862, LES MIS is one of the most ambitious and influential novels in world literature that explores poverty, justice, and redemption in post-revolutionary France. The story centers on Jean Valjean, a former prisoner who rebuilds his life through compassion, while being relentlessly pursued by the rigid Inspector Javert. ⬇️

dabbe Through characters like Fantine, Cosette, and Gavroche, Hugo presents a powerful portrait of human suffering and resilience. The novel‘s greatest strength is its emotional depth and moral complexity. Hugo vividly exposes social injustice and the harsh realities of life for the poor, while emphasizing the possibility of personal transformation. However, the book‘s immense length and frequent historical and philosophical digressions can slow ... ⬇️ 2w
dabbe ... the narrative and challenge modern readers. Its dramatic, often sentimental style may also feel heavy at times.

Despite these potential drawbacks for some, LES MISERABLES remains a major work of world literature, valued for its enduring themes and powerful human stories.

I absolutely loved it. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I was lucky enough to see the musical on Broadway in the early 80s. From that point on, I always aspired to read it. Tried two times and failed miserably ... until the #readlesmis group and @TheBookHippie. As much as I adored the musical, the book, of course, is better. I snot-nosed cried my way through to the end. 💙🇫🇷♥️

One year to finish.
No words can do it justice--
Except “Vive la France!“

Karisa That‘s awesome! The term “chunkster” doesn‘t do this one justice! 🎉 2w
tpixie Congrats!!! 2w

Chrissyreadit Why hello gorgeous reading woman!!!! 😘 Also I LOVED this book so much all three of my brothers read it- and I saw it on broadway in 87 I think…. And still listen to the cast recording…. 2w
dabbe @Chrissyreadit Another thing we have in common! I listen to the original soundtrack all the time. In fact, while reading, the songs that fit a certain section in the book would automatically pop into my head, which made it even more enjoyable! #gorgeousyourself ♥️💙💚 2w
Chrissyreadit Nice!!! I love when people read and love the book- but even better to have a soundtrack! 2w
tpixie @Chrissyreadit what fun memories!!! 💙🤍❤️ 2w
Texreader You know what‘s the best? The fact that we all know what a big deal this is!!! ♥️ Littens!! 2w
tpixie @JenlovesJT47 I was doing so great but really fell behind this year with having to take care of grandkids & a few vacations. I‘ve really enjoyed this book & I‘ve really loved the Buddy Read. So I will continue to plug away & finish it next year. One of my first retirement goals!!! I knew it would be a stretch with work & family, so I‘m trying not to punish myself too much!!! Love to @dabbe @TheBookHippie and all #ReadLesMis buddies💙🤍❤️ 2w
TheBookHippie @tpixie you can do it!!! Keep tagging us we are here for you!!! 2w
Chrissyreadit @tpixie It was my very first broadway play! my best friend and her sisters took me for my 16th birthday and it was the start of an obsession with theatre ❤️ How are you? Also do you like the book? 2w
azulaco I had to read this in high school, and I‘ll be honest: I don‘t know if I would have made it all the way through if we had not been basically group-reading it chapter by chapter and discussing 1-2 chapters daily. Kudos for doing it on your own! 2w
tpixie @Chrissyreadit that‘s such a cool gift! Experience! I‘m loving the book! Doing great Hope you are doing well!! 2w
tpixie @TheBookHippie thanks! I will! 2w
dabbe @Texreader YES! ♥️💙💚 to all Littens! 2w
dabbe @tpixie You've had tons on your plate this year. The book will still be there ... read when you can! ♥️💙💚 2w
dabbe @Chrissyreadit It was my first Broadway musical, too! My second was PHANTOM OF THE OPERA. Two all-time favorites. ♥️💙💚 2w
dabbe @azulaco Oh, I didn't do it on my own. I had support from the #readlesmis group and with @TheBookHippie checking in on us. Just to know I wasn't alone kept me powering on. ♥️💙💚 2w
Chrissyreadit @dabbe I saw Phantom on Broadway too… i feel like i was so lucky to be in nyc during that time- 2w
dabbe @Chrissyreadit Boy, so do I! It was magical, wasn't it? 2w
TheBookHippie @Chrissyreadit I saw Phantom OMG so good. 2w
dabbe @TheBookHippie IKR? So goddamn-gothicy romantic. ♥️💙💚 2w

[It's] Les Misérables, it was taken off the market, I managed to get a few copies before they shredded them...
What's it about?"
"A man who, out of starvation, steals a loaf of bread and is hounded by the police for the rest of his life. SAVAK thinks the book might miror some things in our society."

I put it in my scholbag and headed home....

How strange that in our culture books were considered dangerous...

tpixie @TheBookHippie a #ReadLesMis reference! 🇳🇱💙🤍❤️ 2w

Can't believe we're on the last two book of the year! I was waiting all year to finally add LES MISERABLES! I've been reading it since 1/1/25 with the #readlesmis crew, and we will finish this month! Right, @TheBookHippie? 🤩

TheBookHippie That we shall. 3w
