This one isn‘t getting a ton of love but I very much enjoyed the audiobook. It is a time travel book (my favorite!) that highlights two strong Mexican witches, Nena and her grandniece Marta. It‘s about family and love, though not perfect in any way, and I really liked the cultural aspect. I would have liked to know how Marta‘s case ended, but it really isn‘t important to the overall story. The ending made me smile.

Pre-kids, my spouse and I set about watching as many of the Best Picture winners as we could find in the local video store. We made a decent dent in the list before we got bogged down and video stores closed.

Some of my faves, only one of which is from that "trying to watch them all" period:
-All About Eve
-Terms of Endearment (which I liked better than the book)
-The Silence of the Lambs

Thanks for the tag, @dabbe !

March picks!

My book of choice is “The Captured“ (tagged).

I really want to get into the SPN book, but I've heard it'll make you cry-no bueno right now!

I'm already two Kindle books behind on #ReadYourKindle so let's wait on that.

Can't wait to dive into a Western non-fiction!

PuddleJumper That sounds like you need to be in the mood for sadness 4w
Coffeymuse @PuddleJumper I've heard the SPN book is exceptionally good if you're a fan of the show...however, between my anxiety/depression flaring and my asthma landing me in the hospital last week, I am just in that mindset. #takingcareofmymind 4w
PuddleJumper @Coffeymuse Sounds very sensible! Books like that can wait. Wishing you some calm and good head space 4w

As a woman, wife, and mother, I will be thinking about this one for a while. The brutal rape of a 14 y/o Mexican girl rocks a community in 1976 Odessa, Texas. It‘s a time where women had few options and not much was expected of them, other than being good wives and mothers. Told from multiple POVs, all strong women and girls, and all great characters. The setting itself is written so strongly that it‘s like a character too.

Julsmarshall This one stuck with me as well. 1mo

Interesting history of the deadliest hurricane in history, it hit Galveston TX. It‘s incredible to see how far weather prediction has come and how much there was to learn and understand something as “simple” as the wind.
Larson has a great way of telling the history and making it feel like a story. Excellent research involved I‘m sure.

A quick read touching on Texas history that you may not know surrounding Indigenous and enslaved people. The author reminds us how important it is to know our history, and that you can both love and criticize something at the same time. This is an ongoing and important lesson to remember in these frightening times.

Suet624 Beautiful photo. Where is this? 1mo

Suet624 I wonder if I‘ll ever be able to set foot in Texas. 🥴 1mo
JenniferEgnor @Suet624 I‘ve got some friends there, but no desire to go. Too hot, and I just can‘t stand the thought of the way things are there. The PNW and the NE are more me. 1mo
Suet624 @JenniferEgnor same here. 1mo
