Today‘s #weirdword is for the birds. Gorget refers to a piece of armor protecting the throat, but it is also a common word to describe the patch of feathers on hummingbird necks. Having lived on the east coast of the US all my life, I have never seen any hummingbirds apart from the Ruby-throated, but I discovered the Cornell Lab Bird Cams the other day and now I‘m obsessed with watching them zoom and hover in all their iridescent splendor. ⬇️

CBee Eek! My absolute favorite bird and I LOVE the webcams Cornell does ♥️♥️♥️ 8mo

#WondrousWednesday
@Eggs 😘

1. Yep ... quite a few, both ecards and snail mail cards.
2. I believe in all kinds of possible connections, and not necessarily just the passionate-love kind.
3. My #weirdword of the day: BED ROTTING with Matt + the pups. 😍

Anyone want to play? All are welcome! ❤️💜🩷

Eggs Bed rotting 🤣😂 Thx for playing ♥️ 10mo

Not necessarily “weird“ words for this #WeirdWord post, but words I didn't know. Not sure if there was a hashtag for “learned words“ while reading.... Also “corpse servant!“ I love it!

@CBee

Charityann Oooh, love this! So fun.😄 11mo
CBee Those are definitely interesting, so they fit as “weird” to me 😄 I‘ll have to ask hubby if he knows the German one. Thanks for sharing!! 11mo

I have a monstera just like this (I‘ve become a total plant lady this year) and it‘s so gorgeous! Here‘s a cool article about fenestration - my #weirdword of the day 🪴🪴🪴

dabbe 🧡🖤💜 13mo
CatLass007 Please, please add me to this group. I love learning new words. I started out the year by a friend telling me that I needed to deaccession my library. I‘d never heard the word before and neither did a couple of my friends who are constant readers. But I know what it means now and I‘m putting it into action! 13mo
CBee @CatLass007 I absolutely will! 13mo

CatLass007 Thank you!❣️❣️❣️ 13mo
Megabooks Fenestration is also used a lot in medicine. Creating a hole in a body part (like a tracheotomy) or I remember the hole in a surgery drape being called that as well as small pathologic holes that occur naturally in organs like the kidney. I think it‘s an interesting word! Thanks for sharing. 💜 13mo
CBee @Megabooks that makes sense! I also saw that it can be applied to architecture, specifically windows and doors 😊 (edited) 13mo
mandarchy The French word for window is fenêtre. The accent over the e represents the absence of an s. So whenever you see a French word with an ê, add an s to see if it makes more sense. 13mo
Amiable @mandarchy @CBee The word for window in German is “fenster.” Like the French word, derived from the Latin “fenestra,” which also meant window. These are the types of situations when those 6 years of Latin classes I took in high school and college come in handy. 😀 (Literally. The only times. Because it‘s not useful for anything else. 😄) 13mo
CBee @Amiable I took Latin in high school too, I feel you 😂😂 13mo
CBee @mandarchy I‘m definitely going to try that! 13mo
mandarchy @Amiable I figured it was Latin, but I didn't want to say so because I only took one quarter of Latin in 6th grade. The only thing that interested me was how to read etymologies in the dictionary. And it probably helped me with Spanish and French. But now I'm wondering where the English got window? 13mo
mandarchy Oh, and you will all get a chuckle, my phone just auto corrected Latin with pain 13mo
Amiable @mandarchy Ha ha! Spending an entire semester in college translating the poems of Catullus definitely = pain. I 💗 your autocorrect. 😃 13mo
CBee @mandarchy that tracks 😂😂 13mo
CBee @Amiable Latin was rough but I had the funniest teacher - she came out of retirement to teach Latin again. Safety pins holding her glasses together on the sides, slip always showing, and she‘d randomly recite Jabberwocky in its entirety 😁 She was a hoot! 13mo
Amiable @CBee Did you take it because you wanted to avoid the conversational classes? I started German in middle school but bailed when I couldn't understand a word the teacher ever said. That's when I had the “bright“ idea to switch to Latin in HS because nobody speaks that except for old priests. And I'm not Catholic. So I figured I was safe. Ha! 😄 It bit me in the butt when I started college and found out I had to take 4 semesters of a language. 😖 13mo
Amiable @mandarchy @cbeeYes, Latin also helped with the etymology class I took in high school as well! So that's two things. :) 13mo
TieDyeDude @wildalaskabibliophile Just bought a plant like this! 13mo
CBee @Amiable I honestly can‘t remember, but it seemed interesting at the time and my mom encouraged me (she was an English teacher) to take it 💚 13mo
CBee @TieDyeDude it‘s a fantastic plant! One of my favorites 🪴 13mo

I marked these words a few days ago in my reading and then completely forgot to share them yesterday. There are quite a few interesting words in Dracula and I kind of love how the look up function works in SubStack.

Meshell1313 Ooh so interesting!!! 1y
tpixie @Daisey Very interesting! I‘ve been listening and either glazed over those words, or the audio is different. That‘s good to know about Substack look up! That‘s what I love about evils- a dictionary right at hand! 1y

I read it, but I haven‘t even attempted to pronounce it yet 😂😂 Needless to say, the #weirdwords crew doesn‘t suffer from this phobia 😁😂

IndoorDame 😂😂😂👏👏👏 1y
Amiable I may have Hippopotomonstrosesquippedaliophobia about trying to pronounce Hippopotomonstrosesquippedaliophobia, though. 😃 1y

peanutnine Omg 😳 whoever came up with this word is mean 😂 1y
CBee @peanutnine somebody had wayyyy too much time on their hands. And I keep trying to figure out where the hippo part comes from 🤔 1y
dabbe The 2nd longest word in the English language! Good luck trying to say it! 🤣🤣🤣https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D_OLv05g3Ak

You win best #weirdword today, @CBee! 🤩🤩🤩
1y
Amiable @dabbe OK, so I totally had to go look up the longest word in the English language: Pneumonoultramicroscopicsilicovolcanoconiosis = “a type of lung disease caused by the inhalation of ash and sand dust, mostly associated with volcanic ash.“ 😄 1y
dabbe @Amiable You. Crack. Me. Up. Plus, another #weirdword for today! 🤩🤣🤗 1y
CBee @Amiable I saw that too, but hippo…..etc etc was so appropriate for #weirdwords 😊😊 1y
CBee @dabbe I tried. I really did 😂😂 My husband was like, does it have something to do with hippos? 🦛 😂 1y
dabbe @CBee Maybe hippos are afraid of long words. 🤩🤣🤗 1y
Amiable @CBee It's a totally appropriate word! I just took it as a challenge when @dabbe said it was the SECOND longest word. You can't drop a factoid like that in my vicinity and not expect follow through to the logical next question -- so what 's the FIRST longest? I used to be a newspaper reporter. I can't help myself. 😄 1y
CBee @Amiable I totally get that 😊😂 1y
CBee @dabbe 😂😂😂 1y
