I got some new friends while we were reading. The top two are the same octopus, just reversed. The green side glows in the dark. The red one is much smaller and can actually sit on your shoulder via a little magnetic disk.

GingerAntics @TheBookHippie well, the reverse of the glow in the dark one is like “don‘t make me flip this octopus around. I will release the pissed off octopus if you want to push it.” 🤣😂🤣 2d

quietlycuriouskate I didn't know till now that I needed a reversible octopus. Well, I'm all for lifelong learning! 24h
GingerAntics @quietlycuriouskate right? It comes indifferent colors, but one is happy and one is mad, so it‘s perfection. 23h

Pickpick

This had way less philosophy than I was anticipating. I guess I misunderstood what was being discussed and described by the word “consciousness.” It was still a really interesting book. I have an all new appreciation for octopi, and my love of the sea is deeper than before. Maybe not a great book from a philosophical perspective, but still a really good book about life on earth, especially in the ocean.

We‘ve officially reached the end of the book… or at least the post for the last discussion. Final thoughts? Any snide remarks? I‘m here for whatever you‘ve got. lol

CatLass007 Thank you for the tag. I‘m sorry I missed the group discussions. I hope I get to participate in the discussions for the next book. 2d
AlaSkaat I expected more philosophy, and I think if I had started the book with only cephalopods and biology in mind, I would have enjoyed it more. I kept waiting for the philosophy to begin and felt like something was missing. 🤷‍♀️ 8h
AlaSkaat That said, I still found it fascinating. I knew very little about octopuses before so their behavior and intelligence was new to me.
It‘s a shame they only live for a few years. They don‘t get to pass down their knowledge with each generation like us. Wonder how it‘d be if they could communicate And lived longer

AlaSkaat I‘m confused about what consciousness or intelligence is now. Is it just an awareness of our surroundings or ability to communicate that awareness? Do they have consciousness or just intelligence? (edited) 8h
GingerAntics @AlaSkaat consciousness, as its most basic level is the subjective experience of being. So basically, you know you exist. It‘s been a discussion in philosophy for millennia, pretty much from the beginning of philosophy. Biology discussing consciousness is fairly new. I wish he had defined his terms, because I feel like maybe he is using it interchangeably with intelligence. 1h
GingerAntics @AlaSkaat Of course, without being able to talk with a cephalopod, you cannot know if they have consciousness or not. I don‘t think communication is necessarily limited to creatures with consciousness and to claim such is simply short sighted (and small sighted if that‘s a thing). 1h
GingerAntics @AlaSkaat this book was definitely more science than philosophy, and I think consciousness is used slightly different between science and philosophy. I believe the definition is slightly different, but the actually differences in what is means when a scientist vs a philosopher talk about and does research with consciousness is quite remarkably different. 1h

CatLass007 I bought this book because your group is reading it and because I love Remarkably Bright Creatures. I haven‘t read it yet but I look forward to doing so. Who hosts your philosophy group? I‘d like to be added to the tag list. I know everyone is taking their time with this book but I‘m interested in this book in particular and the group in general. 2d
GingerAntics @CatLass007 I do, actually. I can definitely add you to the tags. 2d
CatLass007 Excellent! Thank you so much! Could you please explain to me how the buddy read works? And exactly what is the name of the buddy read? I noticed you had a couple of hashtags that included the word “philosophy.“ 2d
GingerAntics @CatLass007 we are the dead philosophers society… and we have adventures in philosophy. lol We usually take about 4-6 weeks off between books to let things process and let people catch up. This is the first book I didn‘t post discussion questions, so we may go back to that. I‘m not sure. We‘ll pick another book in the next week or so, and then I‘ll post the reading schedule. We usually do a chapter a week. 2d
CatLass007 Thank you.😊 2d

Turns out, if you are a crap person, your baby knows about it. When your kid starts being a crap person, you literally had to teach them that. They wouldn‘t have been a crap person without the aid of a crap person. Let‘s just think about this.

Chrissyreadit babies are pretty savvy 4d
GingerAntics @Chrissyreadit they really are. People discredit them because they can‘t talk or do anything for themselves, but those little humans know what‘s up! 4d

Well, this was an interesting chapter. I did not need to know about that one guy‘s funeral plans. I can‘t help wondering if he actually got his wish, though.

TheBookHippie This chapter seemed weird. Or it‘s me 😮‍💨😵‍💫🥴😂 1w
GingerAntics @TheBookHippie then I‘m weird, too. It was weird. “This is how cephalopods and weird scientists die!” 1w
AlaSkaat Spoilers, spoilers, I‘m almost there!! 😂 I‘ve had a very bad past 2 weeks, I‘m just starting this chapter. I‘ll be back 🫡 1w
GingerAntics @AlaSkaat you‘re good… no spoilers 1w

Welcome to the philosophy section of the book. I would have liked to see more of the book touch on these things, but at least we got some genuine philosophy going on here.

GingerAntics This chapter took me back, emotionally speaking. I remember as a fairly young child, thinking about thinking, and wondering if anyone else thought about thinking. When I tried asking my parents, they asked me what was wrong with me, and told me I was weird. It took until I got to college to discover that I was just a natural born philosopher. 🤷🏼‍♀️ Go figure. 2w
TheBookHippie It‘s interesting right? Although I‘ve enjoyed it all it needs a focus point 😂 2w
GingerAntics @TheBookHippie same! I felt like it wasn‘t sure where it was going. It has all been very interesting to read, but it has felt very much like we‘re just sort of flowing with the tide as it were. 2w

TheBookHippie @GingerAntics She thinks too deeply was written on all my report cards 🤷🏻‍♀️ 2w
GingerAntics @TheBookHippie 🤦🏼‍♀️🤦🏼‍♀️🤦🏼‍♀️ sometimes, I think these notes should lead to teachers being removed from the profession. You literally just don‘t want to deal with a thinking human being, while having a hissy fit when said thinking human being out thinks you. 2w
TheBookHippie @GingerAntics not in a parochial school… 😅 2w

We are not at the end of anything. We are simply at the most recent point.

I loved this positive view of internal dialogue. Most of what you hear today is about silencing that internal dialogue, but I think that‘s too simplistic. It helps to silence some of it (like negative self-evaluation), but all of it might as well cut off one‘s ability to think clearly.
