This is the second book of Simonson‘s that I‘ve read with my book club—& though I liked this more than THE SUMMER BEFORE THE WAR, I still didn‘t love this slow-paced novel. Set just after WWI, the book centers mostly around Constance, visiting the seaside for the summer season as the caretaker of her passed mother‘s wealthier best friend‘s mother, Mrs.Fog. Constance needs to figure out her next steps but the final party spoiled the romance for me!

This is a light historical fiction set in England in the years just after WWI. Women are facing the hard facts that as the men come home, they are losing jobs and misogyny is once again alive and well. People seem to ignore the fact that women need to eat and some do not have husbands or family to support them. The book also looks at racism, snobbery and includes some romance. The characters are varied and really fun (I loved Mrs. Fog). 4/5 !

I didn‘t read much that month. I should say this was my favorite that month and also Joyland by Stephen King-very unpopular opinion in this one but I liked Joyland

I enjoyed this short story featuring Mary Russell‘s Uncle Jake and a card game. An fun hour‘s diversion.

This was the first one of this classic fiction series that I have read, and I have to say that it was a fun read. Plenty of action and japes in the jungle that Biggles and his companions get them self into. Fast action and fun reading. A bit dated but still didn‘t spoil the read.

#PersephoneClub2023 (February) When at the beginning of this novel, I saw Mrs. Knapp behavior, I couldn‘t stand her, a controller OCD mother-woman. But then, behind her behavior I saw a frustrated, depressed woman repressed for not fulfilled her goals in life, but “obliged” to follow “society stereotypes mother-woman roles”. What a change in the dynamic of this family after Lester accident. The roles in each member will change, for good⬇️

This #persephoneclub read was astonishing. SO ahead if its time! A brilliant portrayal of a 1920s family where ‘home-maker‘ is flipped on its head with father taking the role on. The result = previously unhappy parents finding utter fulfillment in the role reversal. Absolutely beautifully written showing so many viewpoints (even Stephen!) of their now flourishing family life. Imagine the sadness/bitterness if they continued as they were!
