I find it interesting when I read to my students that when you ask about feelings, they can only name 3: happy, sad, or mad. This book forced us to talk about very complex feelings like jealousy and guilt, which are really combinations of shame and worry. #WCCPBA 2023 nominee #underthedustcover #readoutloud

Is it just me or is this a psychological thriller picture book noir? Was Norman named after a Hitchcock character or am I reading too much into this book?

With 4 hours to go, I‘m tapping out of #deweysreadathon 😴
I cannot believe how much reading I got done - I had some errands to run & thought I wouldn‘t even hit the 12 hour mark, but here I am.
I finished 2 books I was working on; read 4 graphic novels; made progress on a third book; and started a new audiobook. I almost - ALMOST! - checked off my whole TBR.

Hope everyone else enjoyed themselves as much I did! ❤️📚

I wish libraries were a lot better at getting in comics because I can't afford to buy them!! But there are so many comics that are made and they aren't taken as seriously as a genre as novels so they just. Can't all be stocked at the libraries I guess. But it's a really big bummer. There are so many I want to read but the library doesn't have so I can't read them. *sobs* I'm just going to pretend that I'm Matilda for the rest of the night bye

Bostonmomx2 Do comics cost a lot? I've never been into them so have no idea but you're right, it's unfortunate libraries don't have the resources for loaning them. I wonder if you could find (or start?) an online trading/loaning community. Don't most keep theirs tho? 7y

queerbookreader @Bostonmomx2 They add up quick, anywhere from $15-21 a 140ish-page trade. It's even more for trade collections or anthologies, and usually more for graphic novels. I've personally only ever seen ppl sell their single issues that are at least a zillion years old, I've never seen used comic trades being sold by any individual or store 7y

queerbookreader @Bostonmomx2 I know libraries can only afford so much so I'm not blaming them and I feel shitty for borrowing, not buying my comics to support the writers/artists but I really just cannot afford to buy them often. It's either the library or I can't read them. I can't help but feel that this situation wouldn't be *as bad* if comics were taken more seriously by the masses/literary community 7y

kendrastephaniekaryn I read comics on Comixology! You still have to pay, but not as much. I'm in Canada so I can't get Comixology Unlimited, but that's also a great and affordable option. 7y

queerbookreader @kendrastephaniekaryn I tried out comixology unlimited but it was really limited on what it offered. I read comics every day so I go through them so fast that I will truly go bankrupt even if I buy the digital versions. I don't get how hardcore comic people can buy comics so much because they're expensive?? How?? $100 worth of digital copies on comixology would last me about 3 days, not even hard copies 7y

Librarianaut Request them!!! The pantheon of graphic novels is so huge that I bet your local library may not have many because...where to start?? Also, buying single issue comics is cost prohibitive for most libraries so requesting the "trade" collections as well as standalone graphic novels may get you more mileage. I'm speaking with my collection development hat on ? 7y

xicanti I second the suggestion to request them. Most libraries have a Suggest A Purchase form on their website, so you don't have to argue with anyone behind a desk. The library ends up with a paper trail of how many people want comics in the collection, too, so they're more likely to acquire trades upon release. 7y

xicanti I highly recommend you keep an eye out for Marvel Unlimited's next free month offer, too. They've got over 16,000 single issues going back over fifty years, and the collection includes some titles they purchased from companies like CrossGen and Dark Horse. No DC, of course. I wish DC would start an Unlimited service so I could explore their stuff like I've done with Marvel's. 7y

queerbookreader @xicanti I would killlllll for a DC unlimited service. I've been trying to recommend titles to my library but they don't really pay attention to comic recs which is a huge bummer. The guy in charge of ya/graphic novel curation doesn't do much when I recommend. I've been subscribing to various comic company newsletters but I just realized I totally forgot to sign up for marvel so I'll get on that now 7y

queerbookreader @Librarianaut I don't read single issues, I only hit up trades. My library isn't super great at listening to requests, especially comic requests. Last week I officially requested they get all the books......so we'll see what happens I guess! 7y
