The Ambassadors | Henry James

Officially kicking off the #turnthepage readathon today!

My goal is to just make headway in any or all of the three novels I have on the go at the moment. Unfortunately I have work tomorrow and a busy weekend with some drive time. But I do have the Fleming and the James titles available on audio via Hoopla, so maybe I can listen a bit, if I‘m not too stressed by traffic. 🤞

Bookwormjillk Stay away traffic and LET US READ! Good luck with it all. I hope you find some quiet time. 2mo
Ruthiella @Bookwormjillk Thanks for the support! 😊 2mo
eeclayton I'll be interested in your review of The Ambassadors. I tried to read it last year but gave up. 2mo

Ruthiella @eeclayton I am 40% of the way through and it‘s a struggle. I *have* to complete it because of a goal I set myself in 1999! 😂 l am just accepting that I won‘t understand all of it. James wrote purposefully complex sentences with so many sub clauses, it‘s often impossible to comprehend what he means. 2mo
CarolynM I‘m glad you said that about Henry James. I tried to read The Wings of the Dove once but had to abandon it because there were just too many sentences that I could not make sense of no matter how hard I tried 😩 1mo
Ruthiella @CarolynM I joke that I read The Wings of the Dove at least twice because I had to read each sentence multiple times. 😂 Watch the movie instead! 🍿 1mo

eeclayton I picked it up because it was mentioned in The Talented Mr Ripley, one of my all-time favourites. I reread Ripley last year and then got interested in what parallels might be spotted in The Ambassadors. I never got that far, in the end. I tried switching to a translation, but discovered that, unfortunately, this novel had never been translated into my mother tongue. 1mo
Ruthiella @eeclayton I‘ve only seen the Ripley movie but I can see the basic parallel in the American sent to Europe to bring back an expatriate American who (a) fails to complete the original assignment and (b) himself becomes subsumed by Europe and never to return. 1mo

I don‘t often reread nonfiction but this was a ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ read for me several years ago. Talked my book club into reading it & the excuse to reread it is a definite bonus. Two chapters in & it is every bit as good this read through as it was the first time. As much a biography, if you will, of A Portrait of a Lady as it is Henry James, this book offers a fascinating analysis of the author, the book, & the world in which it was created.

Happy Birthday Colm!! Look who you share a birthday with @dabbe

The only change I would make is swap out The Testament of Mary for House of Names. I haven‘t read Long Island yet. Great list!!

DrSabrinaMoldenReads Thanks!! I have never heard of this writer! 4mo
dabbe I admit I've never read anything by him. What would be your #1 pick? 🩵 4mo

Cuilin @dabbe I agree with the list with my favorite being 4mo
rwmg I haven't read many of his: Brooklyn, House of Names, and The Shortest Day (a short story). I think House of Names should have been included but I haven't read the others, so I don't know which I would leave out. The Shortest Day was an effective, creepy story set on Dec. 21st. (edited) 4mo
Cuilin @rwmg Agree. I loved House of Names, it definitely should have been included. 4mo

Pickpick

A dysfunctional family story which is apparently a retelling of James‘ The Ambassadors, which I haven‘t read. I mostly enjoyed reading about the interplay between these characters who, although they are family, are essentially strangers, but end up wreaking all kinds of havoc in each other‘s lives.

AmyG Ooooo I love dysfunctional family stories. Stacked. 13mo
sarahbarnes What @AmyG said! And I love the cover. 13mo

Once again, I've been away & I'm back. ☺

It's been a busy season - in May, my older daughter graduated from Boston University & my younger daughter finished her freshman year at Dean College. I'm teaching a summer course right now which is keeping me quite busy, but in two weeks I will have much more time on my hands! I've missed you, Littens! Here's to being more consistent on the beat social media platform ever! ♥
