⭐️⭐️⭐️💫 Story of 4 teen daughters of a wealthy Iranian American entrepreneur who were supposed to star in a Kardashian style reality show that was delayed due to COVID. I was initially put off by a very silly opening where one daughter was trying to change her birthday in order to be a different astrological sign. It tended a little vapid, but it eventually got more substantive and interesting.

I wanted the satire sharper and the humor funnier in this new novel about Iranian-American food heiresses who want to be the next Kardashians but the pandemic gets in the way. Great cover though.

I can't imagine a more surreal upbringing than being born in LA during the Golden Age of Hollywood, coming of age through the death of the studio system, and being there in your 20s for the height of rock and roll and the hippies, let alone going to school at Hollywood High, having artist parents, and literal Igor Stravinsky as your godfather. This is a fun book beginning to end, and Babitz is a fantastic natural writer, the sort of person 👇

The_Penniless_Author ...you hope to end up next to at a party, who can keep you entertained with stories all evening long. 4mo

The_Penniless_Author @TheBookHippie I never knew anything about her until they covered this book on the podcast Backlisted (where all of my recommendations come from these days). I'll definitely give her other stuff a try if I come across it. 4mo
The_Penniless_Author @Ruthiella I subscribe to the NYRB monthly bookclub, but unfortunately started too late to get this one. Luckily, our local Barnes & Noble had this edition in stock. 4mo
TheBookHippie @The_Penniless_Author she was fascinating!!! All her books are good. 4mo

I was so hopeful that I‘d enjoy this but it was mid AF. Really disappointing, especially since reality TV usually works for me as a trope.

The four Persian-American Milani sisters have grown up wealthy from their Dad‘s fast food fortune. Right before the pandemic, they start taping a Kardashian-esque reality show, but their different reactions to the pandemic threaten to tear the family and show apart (in a VERY low-key way). 🙄

BarbaraBB That‘s too bad. The premise sounds good! 4mo

Laura moved to LA to escape a controlling family and make a new start at Grad school. She‘s made homeless within one week and still dealing with past trauma. Enter Polly and Nina who befriend her and welcome her with open arms into their friendship circle. They accept her and protect her.
Such a warm, funny and heart warming story. I loved all the main characters. Each housemate was quirky in their own way and should have their own stories 4🌟
