Künstlers in Paradise | Cathleen Schine

There was a time when the family Künstler lived in the fairy-tale city of Vienna. Circumstances transformed that fairy tale into a nightmare, and in 1939 the Künstlers found their way out of Vienna and into a new fairy tale: Los Angeles, California, United States of America. For years Mamie Künstler, ninety-three-years-old, as clever and glamorous as ever, has lived happily in her bungalow in Venice, California with her inscrutable housekeeper and her gigantic St. Bernard dog. Their tranquility is upended when Mamie's grandson, Julian, arrives from New York City. Like many a twenty-something, he has come to seek his fortune in Hollywood. But it is 2020, the global pandemic sweeps in, and Julian's short visit suddenly has no end in sight. Mamie was only eleven when the Künstlers escaped Vienna in 1939. They made their way, stunned and overwhelmed, to sunny, surreal Los Angeles where they joined a colony of distinguished Jewish musicians, writers and intellectuals also escaping Hitler. Now, faced with months of lockdown and a willing listener, Mamie begins to tell Julian the buried stories of her early years in Los Angeles: her escapades with eminent émigrés like Arnold Schoenberg, Christopher Isherwood, Thomas Mann. Oh, and Greta Garbo. While the pandemic cuts Julian off from the life he knows, Mamie's tales open up a world of lives that came before him. They reveal to him just how much the past holds of the future. Cathleen Schine's captivating and comedic twelfth novel explores exile, émigrés, movie stars, musicians, family bonds and the power of stories--both those we hand down and the ones held secretly in the heart.

I can‘t believe it @Read4life @Bookwormjillk ….it‘s gone…AGAIN!!! Honestly this is the 4th month in a row I lost the borrow before I could start it. It only became available on August3 (yesterday) and now poof 💨 🤷ğŸ¼â€â™€ï¸ğŸ¤·ğŸ¼â€â™€ï¸ğŸ¤·ğŸ¼â€â™€ï¸#Scribd

Bookwormjillk I see what you mean now. That‘s annoying. Defeats the purpose of Scribd. 1y
Cinfhen It‘s so odd because other books im able to borrow all month long - im currently listening to Tom Lake ( which is PHENOMENAL)) @Bookwormjillk so in the end my subscription does pay off but the disappearing books can be really frustrating!!! 1y
Bookwormjillk @Cinfhen does it happen in the middle of listening to a book? That would drive me nuts. 1y

Cinfhen It has @Bookwormjillk !!! Scribd claims it has to do with a certain amount of publication rights they are entitled to hold for specific titles - im not sure I understand why that would mean my losing a title in middle of listening to it or if I‘ve saved a title in my account. 1y
rwmg Yes, a whole load of books I had bookmarked to read one day on Scribd have disappeared. I think they are allowed to have a book for eg 2 years and when the 2 years are up the book just completely disappears from Scribd, whether or not anyone is actually using it. Unlike Netflix does with films or series, Scribd doesn't seem to be able to warn you that a book will disappear on such and such a date. 1y
squirrelbrain So annoying! Some books that I bookmarked have disappeared but one has recently returned. 🤷â€â™€ï¸ Tom Lake is fab-u-lous! 1y
Read4life Extremely frustrating! When I inquired I got: “there are some audiobooks in our library that, while still available on Scribd, are not fully accessible to you until August 02, 2023.
This is determined each month, in part, by your recent reading history. This is done to ensure every author is compensated fairly for their work and helps us balance a competitive monthly subscription price with an ever-growing library.â€

Read4life I started a book the day it became available and the next day it was gone. I feel like it‘s one thing to take away a book I‘ve saved and completely different to take away a book I‘m currently reading. And without notice that it‘s going to happen. 1y
Cinfhen Yup! It‘s ridiculous and it doesn‘t make sense @Read4life I wish we would got some sort of notification @rwmg telling us the book is about expire and on which date. This way we can decide if we even want to borrow or save the book. 1y
Cinfhen Tom Lake is AMAZING on audio @squirrelbrain Meryl Streep is OUTSTANDING! I think she‘s the BEST narrator I‘ve listened to💕🙌🻠1y
Read4life I was confused by the “it‘s still available on Scribd but not accessible to youâ€. If it‘s still available then you can let me finish or give me a “disappear†date. 🤦ğŸ¼â€â™€ï¸ 1y

At times the young protagonist was so very irritating - intentionally. I thought: grow up young man. But the tales of the old woman, and the history of German exhales in LA was fascinating

This is a beautiful and extremely well written book about memories and stories. This is not an, “edge of your seat, what‘s going to happen next†type of read, but it‘s also not boring. If you‘re in the mood for a book about stories, memories, family and perseverance this is it ğŸ‘

Diving into my first COVID19-centric book, we‘ll see how it goes ? “Künstlers in Paradise†by Cathleen Schine sounds like an interesting premise; grandson comes for a “short visit†to see his grandmother in California, but it is 2020 and his visit suddenly has no end in sight. 3 years ago (almost to the day I think ?) the world slowed to a halt and I think I‘m mentally ready to revisit that time. I think. Maybe? We‘ll find out ? More to come ?

Ozzie keeps head butting my book. 😂 Not sure if that‘s the cat seal of approval because he‘s marking it or a sign of complete cat disdain!

New BookPage! Tagged novel (out March 14) sounds good as does the bookseller memoir featured on the cover, Once Upon a Tome. Forager: Field Notes for Surviving a Family Cult by Michelle Dowd was another memoir that caught my eye.

LeahBergen I‘ve been looking forward to Once Upon a Tome for ages. And (oddly for me) I prefer the North American cover! 😮 2y
