As funny as this book is in print, and some of the pictures are truly hilarious, I‘m so glad I #reread this as an #audiobook. In general, I thought I was over making tragic things funny, but Amber and Lacey bring a lot of heart and humor to some truly maddening but absolutely believable stories of racism. I know people in my town are being treated like this, and it pisses me off and makes me want to step up my ally game. Thank you Amber & Lacey!

Megabooks @Cinfhen I‘m going through another one of those phases where I can‘t sleep at night. Sometimes I really hate my body! 3y
Cinfhen I‘m sorry 😢 I was shocked to see you posting at this hour. Sending #LoveAcrossTheMiles xxx 3y
Cinfhen I need to pick this up / just waiting when it appears as an Audible deal 😊 3y

JamieArc I recently listened and was so sad to miss the pictures. The audio is great, but it‘s probably best experienced listening while having the book in hand. 3y
Megabooks @Cinfhen thanks friend!! It‘s a great book, and I hope they do an audible deal as well. Maybe it will come to scribd?? 🤔 3y
Megabooks @JamieArc some of the pictures are fantastic like Lacey trying to imitate pictures of people she‘s been mistake for that she looks nothing like. 3y
JamieArc @Megabooks I‘m also really curious about the makeover photo. I may need to stop in the bookstore just to flip through the photos! 3y
Megabooks @JamieArc Those are so funny! It‘s definitely worth some browsing time. 👍🏻 3y

Ugh!!! A whole chapter highlighting a family argument. I don‘t need to listen to a book to hear another family‘s grievances. I‘m really NOT enjoying this book as much as I was expecting too & Charlie Wheelen, the author, is SUPER ANNOYING. I‘m gonna keep on because I‘m hoping to use this for #ReadingAsia21 according to @Megabooks there will be LOTS of exciting options.

TrishB I think we‘ve all seen the power of family arguments over the last couple of days 😞 3y
Cinfhen Are you referring to the Oprah interview @TrishB I didn‘t watch it but I heard it was pretty uncomfortable 3y
TrishB Yes definitely. I found it very sad tbh. 3y
See All 20 Comments
Megabooks I didn‘t think about it from the arguing perspective. I guess it didn‘t bother me because a) I don‘t have kids to reflect on it like that or b) I was a pretty argumentative teen (but had loving parents at the same time) and I turned out pretty okay. I think at 13, 16, or 18 I definitely would‘ve had meltdowns with that much family time, but the interesting facts outweighed the arguments for me. And yes, lots of Asian countries!! 3y
Megabooks Thank you for the flowers!! I just emailed a picture to you and @BarbaraBB 💕💐💕 I will post a picture here soon!! They are beyond lovely!! 3y
BarbaraBB Oh this is interesting! Based on @Megabooks review I was sure I‘d love this one!! 3y
BarbaraBB @Megabooks They are a but early but we‘re happy they are in time! Happy birthday! There‘s more to come... 😘 3y
Cinfhen I can tell you that TRAVELING with teenagers and even young adults can be tricky!!! We‘ve had PLENTY of meltdowns, even on my recent trip my 28 year old daughter had a HUGE blowup with her 25 year old brother 🙄 @Megabooks but from the onset of this book, the dad is SO FREAKING ANNOYING that I can‘t cut him or his whiny son a break. Now that im a bit more into the book( about to enter NZ) I‘m liking it a bit more @BarbaraBB BUT the dad 👇🏽 3y
Cinfhen Is STILL the type of guy, I want to punch in the throat!! Dude, you‘re not funny and you‘re not cool - stop calling your 18yr old “scoop” and stop with the gonorrhea jokes!!! Ugh!!!! I feel for his kids 3y
Cinfhen Plus, their white privilege is SO EVIDENT and I HATE his false modesty. Don‘t try to act like your some salt of the earth, middle class working man and then talk about your “TigerMom” and country club visits. @Megabooks @BarbaraBB 3y
Cinfhen Yesssss @Megabooks Flowers arrived a day early but perhaps more treats will arrive tomorrow xxxx #LoveAcrossTheMiles 3y
BarbaraBB @Cinfhen @Megabooks I am super intrigued now. Cindy‘s comments make me laugh out loud and I can imagine the annoyance. However travelling the world with my family seems like a dream to me. A subject I‘d love to read more about! 3y
Cinfhen Agreed!!! @BarbaraBB Traveling the world with your kids for nine months is SUPER PRIVILEGED and SUCH A LUXURY!! He‘s making it seem like any family can make it happen with some good planning & job flexibility. And his kids are bickering about typical kid stuff like your knapsack is in my leg room and Sophie is being mean to me...you‘re in PERU hiking Machu Picchu/ shut the F@CK UP!!!!!! 3y
BarbaraBB @Cinfhen Making that kind of privileges sound as a normal thing to do and then emphasize the whining sounds pretty annoying indeed 😆 3y
Cinfhen I‘m done bitching for tonight @BarbaraBB but I‘ll be VERY CURIOUS to hear your thoughts xx 3y
BarbaraBB 😂 3y
Librarybelle I am so loving this thread! 😂 3y
TrishB @Librarybelle 😂 but not feeling the need to read the book! 3y
Cinfhen They do visit A TON of cool places but their constant whining about needing to find internet is a bit annoying @TrishB @Librarybelle I don‘t know why but I have a pretty strong negative reaction to the dad...maybe it‘s the narrator who‘s just bugging me 🤷🏼‍♀️ 3y
Librarybelle @TrishB Exactly! I think the whining would annoy me as well @Cinfhen . I‘m glad they are visiting cool places! 3y

Dion Graham elevates EVERY story!!! I knew I‘d LOVE this audio the moment I heard his sultry voice. The true story of Mokhtar Alkhanshali, a Yemini born American who despite his abject poverty, believes he can better his life and his family‘s through hard work, big dreams and sheer determination. This story of an underdog will leave you inspired and hopeful. Along the way you‘ll learn about coffee, the history of #Yemen and the power of hope. 👇🏼

Megabooks Great review!! I am 75% done and will probably finish today. (It‘s just after midnight here 😉) Thanks for putting this on my radar and we did a buddy read finally!! 🥳🥳🥳 3y
Smarkies Sounds great! I may pick this up for yemen as well as I do not have anything in view yet. 3y

erzascarletbookgasm Wonderful review! You make me want to listen to Dion Graham. 3y
Megabooks @erzascarletbookgasm Dion is so awesome!! This is another amazing book narrated by Dion 3y
erzascarletbookgasm @Megabooks I‘ll look up these two books and this Dion guy! 😁 3y
Cinfhen Yesssss @erzascarletbookgasm EVICTED was SOOOOOO GOOD!!! Excellent suggestion @Megabooks 3y
Cinfhen I think you‘ll enjoy this one @Smarkies especially if you try the audio 🎧♥️ 3y
Megabooks @Cinfhen oh yeah...I forgot about that. I hated it!! Mental block!! 😂😂 I couldn‘t go to bed without finishing it, so I just now did, but I‘m going to wait to review until morning...probably. 😉 I have to take dad to the dermatologist and to the hospital to get his Covid vaccine tomorrow. 🤞🏻 it all goes well!! How are vaccinations going in Israel? Have your parents gotten one here yet? 3y
Cinfhen Good luck with all the appointments tomorrow💚Hubby & I had our first dose last week 🙏🏼Even though a LARGE portion of population have been vaccinated our numbers are still up! Government just EXTENDED our current lockdown until Jan 31😣My parents HAD Covid over Thanksgiving @Megabooks Thank Gd they both had VERY MILD case but they have to wait 3 months before they can get vaccine. 3y
Cinfhen I LOVED Monkey God @Megabooks 😛Hope you ENJOYED this one more 😘 3y
Megabooks Thanks! Praise be, as we say in the South, that your parents came through okay!! It is SO BAD here. How did you feel after your first dose? I am so glad you and hubs are getting protected! Dad seems to do well with vax so I hope he‘s okay. Mom does not do well with vaccines due to post polio so we‘re waiting for more data for her. They aren‘t vaccinating people under 65 yet in KY, but I‘d be worried to take a vax as poorly as I‘m doing now. 💜💜 3y
Megabooks @Cinfhen I remember you crazy lady 😉 that you liked that book!! 😂 Different strokes, I guess!! And I loved Monk 4.25 stars!! Good night friend ❤️ 3y
Cinfhen Praise Be, Indeed @Megabooks ☺️Hubs felt great after, I just had mild soreness in the site arm the first 24 hours, but really it was fine. I understand why you‘d want to wait and your mom too. Did your mom contact polio through the vaccination?? I‘m SO GLAD you loved Monk 🥰Dion definitely had a hand in my enjoyment, though 3y
Megabooks Still up. Mom‘s 76 this year and got polio in 1952 before the vaccine was available. She believes she contracted it from a shared drink with 4 other kids. 3/5 came down with polio. My mom has only the use of her ankles from the waist down. For years she used only crutches but since her late 50s, she‘s had to transition to a scooter. Since it‘s been gradual, she‘s adapted well, but dad did a lot of caregiving that has now mostly fallen to me. 3y
Megabooks I told you our parents were about the same age. Mine were just old AF when they had me, especially for the time. Like many older moms of that era, she was advised not to have a second child. Hence me being an only. Dad‘s turning 72, so mom was a cougar before it was cool. Lololol! 😂😂 3y
Megabooks So glad you and hubby did well with vaccine! I hope the second goes as smoothly. 🤞🏻🤞🏻 3y
Cinfhen Go MOM!! That‘s rough for her though, Meg. To be still so young ( 50‘s) and become confined to a scooter. Your dad really did take on a lot. Hope you‘re getting some good rest. #LoveAcrossTheMiles @Megabooks xxx (edited) 3y
Librarybelle I may have to check out an audio narrated by Graham! 3y
Hooked_on_books I have a Yemen option in my home library, but did you say Dion Graham?!? 😍 I shall immediately look for this audio from my library! 3y
Cinfhen Dion Graham is such a good reader @Librarybelle I hope you can find the audio @Hooked_on_books I think you will enjoy this story 3y
Hooked_on_books I did find it and have it on hold! 2 weeks and counting… 3y
Cinfhen Great @Hooked_on_books and @britt_brooke just told me that Dion reads Concrete Rose @Librarybelle @Megabooks @erzascarletbookgasm 🥰 (edited) 3y
britt_brooke @Cinfhen And @Hooked_on_books is the one who told me about Dion! 💚 Concrete Rose was my first time listening to him. Brilliant narrator! 3y
Hooked_on_books Yes! I saw @britt_brooke ‘s post about the audio and immediately put that one on hold, too. I knew I‘d read it, but now I‘m sure of the format I‘ll use. I love a great audio reader—they just add so much! 3y

Women of the alt-right are not a monolith, and Darby looks at women who took three very different paths. Corinna was looking for purpose after her brother‘s death, and she found community with white supremacists. Ayla had a tumultuous childhood that initially led her to being vegan “earth mother” blogger. Over time, her views changed to being a Mormon tradwife. Lana is in it for the attention. She hosts a popular alt-right podcast, but her ⬇️

Megabooks ⬆️ outspoken views draw the ire of many men in the movement. A really interesting book. 4.25⭐️ #audiobook FYI the tradwife hashtag is for women who live the “1950s white middle class America” lifestyle. Most, not all though, are white supremacists. 3y
Reagan Whoa, that sounds really interesting. 3y
Megabooks @Reagan it was! It exceeded my expectations. 3y
See All 23 Comments
Cinfhen This DOES sound FASCINATING/ is it read by each woman?? 3y
Megabooks @Cinfhen no, it‘s not a memoir. It‘s narrative nonfiction. 3y
BarbaraBB That sounds fascinating indeed. Hoe were your feeling towards them? (edited) 3y
Megabooks @BarbaraBB I feel awful about the alt right and white supremacy, but Corinna actually found her way out, even though at times she still seemed angry. There was an important point made that you just can‘t take away these beliefs without replacing them with some other type of support/community. I think there‘s a lot of anger between the right and left here, and not just the far parts of both sides. Trump was a very divisive president, and ⬇️ 3y
Megabooks I think it‘s going to take a long time to heal those fractures. I went to a (virtual) fundraiser for the two Georgia democratic senate candidates, and there was fighting between the celebrities as to whether the dems should give up on the far right or try to change their hearts. It‘s just a difficult time here. @BarbaraBB (edited) 3y
BarbaraBB Yes and it‘s very hard to understand completely from where I am. What you call left is in many ways what we still call right. Those far right wing ideas (about the 1950s as an ideal for example) are really beyond my comprehension. Fascinating but in an almost dystopian kind of way. It is a difficult time but I hope Biden will be able to start uniting you again. 💚 3y
Cinfhen Got it!! Does the author narrate?? It is a terrible time in America, Meg. You can FEEL the tension everywhere you go. Im amazed on every visit how divisive even my friend group is. 3y
Megabooks @Cinfhen no, a professional narrator does. I know seyward, and I think they made the best choice for the book going VO. The narration is definitely good. And yes, america is so terribly divided. My own family is. There are definitely a lot of factors, but looking back at the loss of the Southern Democrats, which acted like a third party many times, was huge, especially here in the South and as a party that required compromise at the federal level 3y
Megabooks @Cinfhen just my two cents after thinking about Kentucky politics and thinking back on my lifetime and being a political nerd until I got to vet school, which was pretty much all consuming. Vet school that is. Every second went into that! (edited) 3y
Megabooks @BarbaraBB I know! It‘s just crazy how right even “moderates” are here. It‘s interesting to see what my older friends‘ kids, who are just voting age now, who started to be aware of politics under Obama, a lot are in the “far left”. They are much more vocal in their support as well, coming of age well into social media and the protests that are happening now. I think adults born in the 80s and early 90s are much more split politically. ⬇️ 3y
Cinfhen I love hearing your two cents....I think you‘re always right on the money 💜 3y
Cinfhen Pretty awesome that you know the author 🙌🏻 3y
Megabooks @BarbaraBB many of the younger ones (22 and under) don‘t understand at all why LGBT and POC are seen differently or why there‘s actual debate about the science of climate change. I have hope. 3y
Megabooks @Cinfhen thanks!! 💜 I think I read so much nonfiction because I like to think deeply about issues or get multiple perspectives on life. I definitely tend more serious in my reading! Seyward went to Duke as well and was a few years behind me but we were both involved in journalism and had mutual friends in the classes between us. She was very driven and smart then and I don‘t think that has changed! So many of my friends went deep into their ⬇️ 3y
Megabooks @Cinfhen fields and comparatively, I feel like a Jack of all trades, master of none. But I‘ve come to appreciate that about myself. 3y
Cinfhen I wouldn‘t want you any other way...except pain free, of course 💜😘 3y
Megabooks @Cinfhen thanks friend! 🥰😘 and pain free would be divine! I think I‘ve picked up shingles. 👎🏻 we‘ll see. I go to the doctor tomorrow. I finally expressed to my mom about how I feel like I‘m burning the candle at both ends, and she was all, but can you pick up groceries? 🤦🏻‍♀️ I finally said no that I had too much to do for the shape I‘m in right now until Friday and if she wanted them before then, she‘d have to figure it out herself! 3y
Cinfhen Ugh, I‘m sorry. But I‘m glad you used your voice to convey to your mom that she‘s an adult too. She CAN figure out another way. #LoveAcrossTheMiles now go to sleep, already xxxx (edited) 3y
Megabooks @Cinfhen yes, ma‘am. Headed to bed! Sending love dear friend!! You are awesome!! 😘 3y
BarbaraBB I hope you are sleeping indeed but I agree on the Gen Z and their attitude towards those issues. That‘s similar here. My kids really don‘t see any difference between people and don‘t understand all the discussions about it. There is hope! Starting today ❤️❤️ 3y

Difficult Women | Roxane Gay
post image

Really long day already, but my Feminist Book Club Box came! 🎉🥳📚 I have a hardcover copy of DW in storage, but I‘m glad to have it back in my collection for now. Also very excited for the discussion with Roxane!

There‘s a cute calendar, chocolate-covered hazelnuts, grapefruit-scented soap, and this gorgeous green and gold washi tape, too. I‘m glad to be supporting small businesses with some of my book-buying 💵.

BarbaraBB What a wonderful package! Enjoy... and get some sleep 💚 3y
Megabooks @BarbaraBB thank you friend! I did sleep. Parents are driving me batty! (edited) 3y
BarbaraBB Because of current politics or just because 😏? Take care! 3y
See All 14 Comments
Megabooks @BarbaraBB no, not politics. Dad is just not thinking clearly or trying anymore. It‘s just really hard. I‘ve been in a lot of pain. (I‘m fighting tears due to pain now, and I can barely sleep.) mom gets over upset about it all, so I‘m the only voice of reason. Tbh, I‘m just exhausted. Sorry I just unloaded all that. 💜 3y
Cinfhen Ugh, your family situation doesn‘t sound healthy for you anymore, Meg. You‘re a wonderful daughter but you need to start taking care of yourself too. Do your parents have siblings that you can speak with? I‘m worried that your dad needs more care than you can or should be responsible for. I‘m thinking of you xxx #loveacrossthemiles 3y
Cinfhen Oh and the book box looks amazing 3y
Megabooks @Cinfhen thanks, the book box was a bright spot today. My family situation is hard. My mom is panicked. My dad is and isn‘t the same person he used to be. There‘s no family to step in. We do have a lot of church members that have been helpful, but we generally only ask when things get terrible. Plus my two closest irl friends have their own issues. One is a single mom following her husband‘s suicide and the other is going through an ⬇️ 3y
BarbaraBB I am with Cindy, Meg. You can‘t bear all this responsibility by yourself. It is too much, you are too close, and you need time and space for yourself. I know it‘s none of my business and please correct me if I‘m crossing a line but I wish you have (professional) people nearby who you can reach out to sometimes to take over the care for your dad 🤍🤍 3y
Megabooks Acrimonious divorce. I‘m trying to support them as they have me in the past but with the pandemic and my own problems, the well is empty. My therapist suggested a short vacation, but I‘m unsure if my mom can handle it. The pandemic has just made things worse as far as in person support as well. That‘s my story... @BarbaraBB @Cinfhen (edited) 3y
Megabooks @BarbaraBB I do have a therapist, which is helpful, but her suggestions seem to big. We have an aide for dad, but he is unreliable. We have a maid that comes for a few hours twice a week. I don‘t know what we‘d do without her. She‘s been with us for 30 years. 3y
BarbaraBB It‘s a hard story. I can understand a vacation sounds a bit far fetched and impossible right now. And your friends, the aide and COVID don‘t make it any easier for you. I‘m of no help, I wish you could escape it all for a few hours or days to energize and to take care of yourself. Please know you can always email me! 3y
Cinfhen I‘m happy you have outside resources to help alleviate some of the burden but I‘m still concerned about you. Maybe now is the time to reach out to your pastor or church friends and seek some guidance. I know the pandemic SUCKS!!!!! It‘s really infringing on situations making them harder and 100 times more complicated. A little break is a nice idea but it‘s only a bandaid - you need a bigger plan. I‘m sorry if I sound too opinionated 👇🏽 3y
Cinfhen But this is how I would talk to my close friends and people I genuinely care for. I wish I could offer you more, but I‘m here as a sounding board or anything else. You‘re not alone, Meg. XX 3y
Megabooks @BarbaraBB @Cinfhen thank you both for being such fantastic friends. Its really wonderful to have people to talk to in the lonely hours at night. It‘s hard for me to reach out for help, but I am close to breaking. I lie awake at night in pain and worried. I really just need a vacation. I need my own space. I need to talk to my therapist more often. I feel smothered. I don‘t mean to worry you. I‘ve survived a lot already. 💜 I can do it somehow. (edited) 3y

The Complete Persepolis | Marjane Satrapi
post image

These are my best books of each month in #nonfiction of the 375 books I‘ve read this year! 🎉🎉
Jan -> Apr
May -> Aug
Sept-> Dec

There was definitely some competition for best nonfiction book of December. How to Be an Anti-Racist and Mediocre were very good books, but ultimately the breadth and depth of storytelling in The Complete Persepolis won out. It really shows how much can be said in the graphic format.

🥂 to a good 2021!

Cinfhen Ohhhh!! Another list to lust for 🥰Happy 2021 to you my DEAR friend #LoveAcrossTheMiles 3y
Megabooks @Cinfhen happy 2021 to you dear Cindy!! I‘m jealous that it‘s already 2021 there. We‘ve got about 45 minutes left in this crap year here. I plan to go to bed soon and wake up feeling amazing! 🤞🏻🤞🏻 #loveacrossthemiles for sure ❤️ 3y
