The Monk of Mokha
The Monk of Mokha | Dave Eggers
From the best-selling author of The Circle and What Is the What, a heart-pounding true story that weaves together the history of coffee, the struggles of everyday Yemenis living through civil war and the courageous journey of a young man--a Muslim and a U.S. citizen--following the most American of dreams. Mokhtar Alkhanshali grew up in San Francisco, one of seven siblings brought up by Yemeni immigrants in a tiny apartment. At age twenty-four, unable to pay for college, he works as a doorman, until a chance encounter awakens his interest in coffee and its rich history in Yemen. Reinventing himself, he sets out to learn about coffee cultivation, roasting and importing. He travels to Yemen and visits farms in every corner of the country, collecting samples, eager to improve cultivation methods and help Yemeni farmers bring their coffee back to its former glory. And he is on the verge of success when civil war engulfs Yemen in 2015. The U.S. embassy closes, Saudi bombs begin to rain down on the country and Mokhtar is trapped in Yemen.

#BFC I didn‘t even bother this week 💩With my husband in the hospital, I did zero reading and zero fitness goals, although my pacing and walking to and from the parking garage to his room through the hospital complex probably burned a ton of calories. Three holds came in, I‘m hoping to listen to the new Dave Eggers 🎧because my reading concentration is pretty abysmal 🥴

britt_brooke @Cinfhen I know, and I don‘t understand why. 😬 It‘s disgusting. Just not my idea of entertainment. But, that‘s why I don‘t read a ton of thrillers. 6mo

britt_brooke @Cinfhen For sure. Yet I do love some books with gratuitous violence. I think it really depends on the writing and overall premise. I‘m so hard to please sometimes. 😜 Glad you‘re enjoying it so far! 6mo

It‘s been a very long time since I finished a book in one day! I recommend this to anyone who enjoys coffee!

This is the non-fiction story of Mokhtar Alkhanshali, a Yemeni American who dreams of bringing high grade Yemeni coffee to the speciality coffee world. There are only a few problems...Mokhtar is no coffee expert at the start of the book and Yemen is on the bring of civil war.

Read this exciting adventure of the Indiana Jones of coffee!

Pruzy @rather_be_reading It is really good! Love how some complaints about the area have not changed over the hundred-ish years the area has been American 7mo

A gulp of a book with info on the history of coffee and the life of a Yemeni immigrant. The main character is a delight and although it is non fiction it reads like fiction. #nonfiction2018 #coffee

This book is so so good. Was not expecting such a technical book about coffee, but that is the magic of Eggers. I did not want to put this book down. I want to buy this coffee, but it is $160 for less than a pound, but good for him.

therealdealbeall I listened to the This American Life episode where they talked to the guy the book is about. I hate coffee, but I found the story really interesting! 2y

This is one of those stories that I'd think was too outrageous if I didn't know it was true. It's about a Yemeni-American man who is determined to bring Yemeni coffee to the rest of the world. His determination and fearlessness is equal parts crazy and admirable.

I learned a lot about Yemen and coffee. Dave Eggers weaves everything together wonderfully. I know a lot of people don't like him, but he's one of my faves.

BarbaraBB I think it is admirable that Eggers is able to write about such a different subject in every book. I don‘t like them all but this one sounds great again 2y
Bookchipmunk I read this over the weekend and loved it! I did get confused about the time line in the 2nd half it was 2014 and then a few pages later it was 2015. Did you find that it jumped around time wise or was it suppose to be chronologic? 🤓 2y
NCNY @Bookchipmunk I agree that the timeline was a little unclear. Once he got back to the US I think every step took way longer than I assumed. 2y

HOW PRETTY IS THIS COVER!?! Zeitoun by Dave Eggers is one of my favorite books of all time. It‘s nonfiction about a Syrian American man and his American born family in New Orleans during Katrina. This looks to be a promising follow up to that!

Bry I loved Zeitoun too! Looking forward to trying out this one. 2y
