My 2nd Lisa See this year. Like her blend of history and narrative. This takes place in 20th century on jeju, an island of south Korea, occupied by the Japanese when story opens. Cold water adventure/hardship is bracing. #atlasreads #vicariousadventure #sealife #wetfields #matriarchy #lisaseefangirl

@Come-read-with-me sent me a copy of this book and I‘m really enjoying it. It reminds me so much of a French movie I saw on Netflix, where gender norms/roles are completely reversed. In it, a man who isn‘t very kind to womxn wakes up in a world controlled by them! Highly recommended. Anyway, @Come-read-with-me also sent me the pink hat I‘m wearing here. THANK YOU!!!

Come-read-with-me @JenniferEgnor 🥰 Glad you like the book and you are rocking the hat!! Also, glad you‘re feeling better! 4y

Come-read-with-me @JenniferEgnor No thanks, I have a very old and well loved copy. Share it with someone you think would enjoy it! 4y
JenniferEgnor @Come-read-with-me I was hoping you‘d say that, because I want to make some notes. I‘m almost finished and will be reading it again for highlights, and yes, Litsy quotes! 4y

Go on then. My response to the no make-up, no filter #BFCr2 #PhotoChallenge. Here I am, heavy jowls, bags under the eyes, wonky eyelids, grey hairs and all.

“Classical writers testified to the fighting skills of Celtic women.”

Crazeedi Adding, looks like an interesting read! 6y
GingerAntics @Crazeedi it‘s about Ireland‘s 16th century Pirate Queen who went toe to toe with Queen Elizabeth I. 6y
Crazeedi @GingerAntics that's sounds really good! 6y

GingerAntics @Crazeedi I‘m really enjoying it so far. It seems like I‘m recruiting a group of women to read this. You‘re just the first. lol 6y
Crazeedi @GingerAntics 😉😊👍 6y
GingerAntics @Gezemice here is an example...I think anytime goddesses are more common than gods there is good reason to believe a society is matriarchal. (edited) 6y
Gezemice That sounds like an excellent book to read! Add me to the list, lol. And I assume you meant matriarchal... 6y
GingerAntics @Gezemice yeah, apparently my phone isn‘t a fan of matriarchy. lol 6y
Gezemice @GingerAntics designed by men... 🤔 6y
GingerAntics @Gezemice of course...women in tech are having massive issues as it is. 🙄 6y
Gezemice @GingerAntics I am in tech... and finding a job where I am appreciated is difficult. I am having good luck at the moment but I had rough times. 6y
GingerAntics @Gezemice I‘ve heard of women getting death threats and rape threats by boys who think women don‘t belong in the tech industry. 6y
Gezemice @GingerAntics . I think it happened to a few women in the game industry who actively criticized the boys network on social media, but that is a very extreme case. Most of it is just everyday sexism that slowly oppresses. 6y
GingerAntics @Gezemice not surprising, really. It‘s not the extreme acts that do the most damage, it‘s the little everyday acts that become normal and okay that do the most damage. 6y

@julesG @OleAnder reading this entirely unrelated book...it started the second chapter talking about matriarchal Ireland where military leaders weren‘t chosen based on gender, a woman trained all legendary warriors, etc. and how it was taken over and destroyed by Rome and Christianity.
I knew this was a great choice for my next book!!!
#annechambers #graceomalley #granuaile #women #matriarchy

TheBookHippie Adding to my TBR! 6y
GingerAntics @TheBookHippie so far I am absolutely in love with this book. I‘ll be sure to keep you posted. 6y
julesG Yes! Sounds like the perfect choice. 6y

AlaSkaat Searched about it on the net, and from what I've just read, I want to meet this woman. Lol. Enjoy!! 6y
GingerAntics @OleAnder Grace O‘Malley or Anne Chambers? I‘d build a time machine just to meet Grace O‘Malley. I feel like we could bring her back to the present and she‘d be all “they are still pulling this crap? Forget that. I have a sword. Give me a minute.” ⚔️ 6y
AlaSkaat Grace! She sounds like somebody I wish to be. Took this from goodreads- She was Grace O'Malley, the sixteenth-century Irish woman who provoked awe, anger, admiration, and fear in the English men who, by persuasion and by the sword, came to conquer the land of her birth. And just by this sentence I wish she were alive today. Lol. I want to learn her tricks 6y
GingerAntics @OleAnder right? She seems like my kind of woman. A tomboy with attitude. lol 6y
AlaSkaat @GingerAntics Haha, exactly! She had that powerful grace. I think I must read more about her now. I'm interested! 6y
GingerAntics @OleAnder I think I first learned about her on this Netflix show “Warrior Women.” I knew I had to find books on her after that. The tagged book is apparently THE seminal work on her. 🤷🏼‍♀️ 6y
AlaSkaat @GingerAntics I'll see if they have it at the library tomorrow. 🤔 Been also wanting to finally read Lincoln's biography, so might as well get both! 6y
GingerAntics @OleAnder 🤞🏻 fingers crossed 🤞🏻 6y
GingerAntics @Gezemice this is a common view, that Rome spread patriarchal views to places where it didn‘t exist before. 6y
Gezemice @GingerAntics Interesting! I can see this - Roman culture was very persuasive. I should add tgis to my list! 6y
GingerAntics @Gezemice this book is sort of about what we‘ve been talking about...it‘s about a woman who rejected any notion that she couldn‘t be in charge in a man‘s world (16th century Ireland) and even managed to convince the men under her that she was the best choice to lead them. 6y

The Power | Naomi Alderman

Pickpick

Imagine a world where over night #women find they have the power over life and death , literally, at their finger tips. What world would that create? The characters were well written with great development. The story was engaging and gets you thinking about the state of the world we live in and how easily situations can reach breaking point. Worth a read.
