An absolutely brilliant book & one that‘s well worth a reread. The author is a doctor herself so portrays the medical parts of the story & how doctors think with ease, but it‘s her look into the abhorrent mind of a serial killer that elevates this book above a lot of its contemporaries. And the police that populate her story are also written well. This is the reason she‘s one of my auto-buy authors along with Karin Slaughter & Elizabeth George.

After a few bad days, I‘m back reading. The last book led me to try the Rizzoli & Isles books again. This 1st book only has Jane Rizzoli, Maura Isles doesn‘t make an appearance till the 2nd book The Apprentice. Homicide detectives Thomas Moore & Jane Rizzoli are on the hunt for a serial killer who kills women after removing their uterus. But Moore struggles when he becomes involved with a survivor of the killers previous attacks in Georgia.

If you‘re into medical horror and thrillers, this book is for you. A newly minted doctor, fresh out of med school realizes something is very wrong about the string of recent comas taking place in the hospital she works at.
—I saw the 1978 movie and thought it was pretty disturbing—I‘d love to watch the new mini-series. Have you seen it?

AmyG Where can I watch? I saw the movie and read the book years ago. 1mo
JenniferEgnor @AmyG looks like it‘s available for rent on Amazon Prime. 1mo
AmyG Thanks! I will have to check it out. 1mo
Chrissyreadit I saw the title and first sentence and thought this is an oldie!!! did not realize there was new media around it! 1mo

Cook has an engaging writing style that pulls you right in from the start. If you‘re into the biological sciences this one should appeal to you. Pia is a brilliant medical student who, due to unforeseen events, has to solve a complex life/death issue. I really enjoyed this one. This is a really good work of fiction.

This is the second book in the Miner & Mulville series, but can be read as a standalone. I have not read the first book and was able to follow this book just fine.

My first impression was that it was very evident the author is a doctor. The medical parts were incredibly detailed.

This was a medium-paced medical thriller taking place in Boston. It had lots of medical terminology used to describe patients and their conditions. There were patient right to die issues. The issues of “for profit” healthcare have frustrated me and while reading this, those feelings were present. 4/5⭐️

Different than what I thought (in that Isles doesn‘t appear at all), and not like the tv show (yet), but I found it a fun read and will continue the series. Very bingeable.

GinaKButler I recently started this series, too! It‘s good! 6mo

RANT ALERT

I liked it - sort of, and only in relation to my enjoyment of the TV show - and will continue the series, but I‘m hoping the books get better from here or I won‘t be continuing for long. For being the Rizzoli and Isles series, Isles wasn‘t even in it. She wasn‘t even mentioned. This one was actually kind of painful. There was a ridiculous amount of sexism that is not present in the show.
👇🏻👇🏻👇🏻

GingerAntics Meat is “men‘s food” and a daughter‘s career - Jane‘s career - is less important than either of her “good looking brothers.” Frankie is a huge jerk in this one, and can‘t be bothered to help either his mother or his sister in the kitchen, and Jane was yelled at for having to rush back to work in the middle of a case because Frankie is home from war and he should be her priority. 👇🏻👇🏻👇🏻 7mo
GingerAntics Worse yet, Jane was openly sexually harassed by another detective when he put one of her tampons in her bottle of water. One character even had all white furniture specifically because it was “pure” and “virginal.” Supposedly this was written in 2001, but that one made me question if it was actually written in 1901. It was just deplorable. I know the show came from the books, but so far the show is WAY better. 👇🏻👇🏻👇🏻 (edited) 7mo
GingerAntics It doesn‘t take long to remember this was written over 20 years ago, and the reminders never stop coming. From medical charting being done by hand, the explanations of what chat rooms are, what CODIS and VICAP are, to referring to a character as not quite as attractive as Mel Gibson but still good looking, the dated references just keep on coming. That Mel Gibson reference did NOT age well at all. 👇🏻👇🏻👇🏻 7mo

GingerAntics It even refers to AOL accounts being used in office settings (which I never knew was a thing seeing how expensive it was). There was also a black guy with a cop‘s boot on his neck and no one batting an eyelash. I nearly stopped at that point. 👇🏻👇🏻👇🏻 7mo
GingerAntics The narrator was HORRIBLE. She doesn‘t know how to pronounce the first victim‘s name, Ortiz (and apparently no one else involved in the production of the audiobook knew either). She also couldn‘t pronounce basil, saline, epinephrine, or synapses. All of these words came up multiple times. 👇🏻👇🏻👇🏻 7mo
GingerAntics Considering the author is a medical doctor, you‘d think you‘d get someone who could say these basic words, but no. Considering this version of the audiobook was recorded in 2020, it‘s just ridiculous. #TessGerritsen #TheSurgeon #RizzoliAndIsles

AnnCrystal I haven't watched the show or read the books, but did some web research for you, here is what I found:

“Rizzoli appears in the series' first novel, The Surgeon, and Isles is introduced in the second, The Apprentice, which serves as the basis for the television series.“

Hope this helps 😉📚📺💝.

GingerAntics @AnnCrystal I know. I looked that up while I was listening. There is a fan page that lists the characters in each book. 7mo
AnnCrystal @GingerAntics 🆒😉👍🏼💝. 7mo
GingerAntics @AnnCrystal I‘m really hoping this author isn‘t a medical professional anymore. I hope she‘s switched to writing full time. Her insistence that the uterus is what makes a woman a woman had to have been horrible for her patients that had hysterectomies back in 2000. Ugh. I wish she would shut up about that already. 7mo
AnnCrystal @GingerAntics Yikes 🤔😕🤨. 7mo
GingerAntics @AnnCrystal yeah. As a female medical professional… I mean I get it was the early 2000s, but seriously. Honestly, I feel like the author may be slightly monstrous herself. Did her parents not like her (at all) compared to her brothers? So many questions. Maybe I should look up some interviews of her to try and get a feel for her. I‘m not sure I particularly like her. 7mo
AnnCrystal @GingerAntics strange, and true about those who have been under her care...😢. 7mo
GingerAntics @AnnCrystal it really is. I have such mixed feelings. I‘ll give it one more book, but if it doesn‘t start getting better, I think I‘m going to be done and I‘ll stick with the show. The show is SO much better. 7mo
AnnCrystal @GingerAntics 😉👍🏼 Good plan. Don't let it ruin the show for you 📺💝. (edited) 7mo
GingerAntics @AnnCrystal the show is so much better. I think it‘s cool that in the final episode, one of the characters is going to start writing crime novels, so Tess Gerritsen actuality appears on screen to meet with her to talk about it, but I don‘t have to actually like her as an author to appreciate how they skipped that in. 7mo

Since I‘ve been home the last 7 months, my mother has gotten me hooked on the TV show Rizzoli and Isles. When I found out it was based on a series of novels and short stories, I knew I had to read them. My mother says Maura Isles reminds me of her… it‘s better than Sheldon Cooper so I‘m down. lol

GingerAntics No Isles in this one and the narrator can‘t even say the name Ortiz. I‘m just chugging through so I can get to the next book with Isles in it. 7mo
