mcctrish What to do, what to do? I love how Stephen is mad at Maggie #whatamaroon 1mo
Ruthiella I feel like Stephen crossed a line there by showing up and it makes me mad. He‘s putting Maggie in a bad situation-one he can walk away from as a man, but she as a woman cannot live down. She will be unfairly judged either way. 1mo

mcctrish @Ruthiella and it‘s not the first time either 🤬 Phillip has noticed and he isn‘t blameless either #tomisgoingtolosehisshit #andstillblamemaggie 1mo
TheAromaofBooks Side note, still trying to figure out why the heck Tom is the most important person in Maggie's life. Let's make all our decisions based on what the judgmental jerk who treats you like trash will think 🙄 1mo
ElizaMarie @TheAromaofBooks yes!!! I mean how close do you have to stay with your mean brother? She needs to choose her own family. 1mo
Ruthiella @TheAromaofBooks I agree and it is frustrating. I think Eliot is telling us that Maggie‘s bond with her brother is stronger than any other ( other than to her father, now deceased). 1mo
Bookwormjillk @TheAromaofBooks YES!! Granted the rest of that family would side with him if he tells them to, but Maggie has proven that she can survive on her own. Gritty is the only one who makes sense in this book. 1mo
mcctrish @TheAromaofBooks women just being programmed by the patriarchy to do what the men in the family say ( Maggie needs Tom more than he needs her ) 1mo
mcctrish @Bookwormjillk she totally has proven she can survive on her own 1mo
dabbe The Stephen-Maggie thing has RUTH vibes all over it. Don't give in, Maggie! If only it were the 2020s! 😱 1mo
Clare-Dragonfly Ugh! I am SO mad at Stephen now! How dare he show up and tell her she has to talk to him because his poor little manly fee-fees are hurt. How dare he blame her for him riding thirty miles a day about it. Get over yourself, dude. 😡😡😡😡🖕🏻🖕🏻🖕🏻 1mo

BarkingMadRead @TheAromaofBooks seriously! She‘s an asshole magnet 🤣 4mo
Cuilin @TheAromaofBooks thank you for saying that I wholeheartedly agree! 4mo
Cuilin The line let me fly with you would have been very sweet and cute if the question had not been “how would you like to be Mrs. Buddy Willard?” and completely erasing her. 😣 4mo
BarkingMadRead @Cuilin everything about this chapter made me want to scream 🤣 4mo
Bookwormjillk Usually I‘m annoyed with her but firmly on Team Ester in this chapter. Was that jerk happy she broke her leg?? 4mo
BarkingMadRead @Bookwormjillk I totally got that vibe, like he was glad to be able to do some doctoring 🙄 4mo
Cuilin @Bookwormjillk seemed like a metaphor for breaking her, now doesn‘t get to run away!!! 4mo
mcctrish First how does one get well in such an absolutely disgusting sounding place, second who the hell trusts someone to teach them to ski who doesn‘t know how?! Who stepped in front of her? Buddy? Honest to god Ester, stay away from this dumbass (edited) 4mo
Bookwormjillk @mcctrish I read it twice and couldn‘t figure out who stepped in front of her 4mo
mcctrish @Bookwormjillk it was the man saying “you were doing fine until the guy stepped in your path” not skied, stepped made me think it was Buddy (edited) 4mo
Bookwormjillk @mcctrish good clue 4mo
willaful I was kind of caught in wondering why Esther seemed more upset about Buddy's hypocrisy than about what happened in this chapter. But maybe she's letting herself realize things slowly because they're so freaking awful. 4mo
Clare-Dragonfly Wow, Buddy is an idiot! He shakes her hand when she comes in, tries to give her an ashtray he made, and then asks her to marry him in the most unromantic way possible?! Not to mention the skiing failure. Esther said in the last chapter that she broke her own leg but Buddy clearly broke it! 😂 4mo
CogsOfEncouragement I‘m enjoying the reading and all of your comments. This is my first time reading, and I‘m glad I‘m among friends to do so! 4mo
ElizaMarie Ugh!!! Buddy Buddy Buddy —- He is such a pompous man. 4mo
AnishaInkspill @BarkingMadRead thanks for tagging me into these posts, this is brilliant as I don't have the to read this this year but i could never get tired of reading this and what always comes to mind is Esther's dry wit. 4mo
DieAReader @TheAromaofBooks 💖I thought I was alone in not liking anyone😂 4mo
dabbe @CogsOfEncouragement 🩶💚🩶 4mo
dabbe This part teared me up: “I felt my lungs inflate with the inrush of scenery--air, mountains, trees, people. I thought, 'This is what it is to be happy.' I plummeted down past the zigzaggers, the students, the experts, through year after year of doubleness and smiles and compromise, into my own past.“

Wow, can she write.
