Cuilin To be in that society sounds exhausting!!!! Also if you were a performer can you imagine how distracting it would be with everybody just showing up and leaving whenever. And owning a house in Manhattan big enough to have a ballroom is hard to imagine today. 6d
mcctrish @Cuilin it‘s almost exhausting to read about society - did Archer and #winoforever ‘s cousin have a relationship? 6d
See All 11 Comments
Ruthiella It does sound exhausting and performative. I read this years ago and saw the movie when it came out. I remember the basic outline of the plot but none of these details. 6d
JacqMac It doesn‘t just sound exhausting, but also uncomfortable. 6d
JenlovesJT47 Yay I‘m caught up! 6d
Bookwormjillk New flex is hosting a ball but going to the opera instead of helping my staff get ready 6d
Clare-Dragonfly @Bookwormjillk But only, like, one scene of the opera. 6d
ElizaMarie @Cullin that‘s what I was thinking too- they are horrible audience members! 6d
julieclair @Cuilin @ElizaMarie It seems like the opera was only an excuse to see and be seen, and then gossip about whom you saw and who saw you. So disrespectful to the performers. But I don‘t think these people worried much about disrespecting people who were “beneath” them. 6d
Cuilin @julieclair @ElizaMarie yes, they probably see performers as some form of servant existing to cater to them. Ugh 6d

ElizaMarie I am curious about the story behind Preston 2mo
Bklover I have to admit I rather enjoyed Clare getting snubbed! 1mo
See All 10 Comments
willaful Cynthia definitely has something of her mother's ruthless disregard for other people's feelings, though she did try to make up for it.

@Bklover Yes, some satisfaction. Wow, there aint no climber like a social climber 'cause a social climber don't stop!
1mo
dabbe @Bklover 🎯🩵🎯! 1mo
mcctrish #notarealclare and Cynthia are double trouble imo @ElizaMarie I too am very curious about the mystery surrounding Preston ( I am happy the note came from him and not Roger ) 1mo
julieclair @ElizaMarie @mcctrish Me too. I really want to know what their story is. 1mo
julieclair This ball is going to be so much fun! #WhatCouldGoWrong #ThePossibilitiesAreEndless 1mo

mcctrish What a gong show! He likes her, she likes him, he‘s married to a French girl and Molly is left out 2mo

dabbe @mcctrish I see some major emotional explosion coming soon down the Hollingford road! 2mo
willaful Before I was getting Emma vibes, now I'm getting Mansfield Park vibes. 2mo
Bklover Osborne and Roger can be such idiots! Poor Molly! 2mo
Lcsmcat @willaful Very Mansfield Park-like! Except Molly has more spirit than Fanny. 2mo
willaful @Lcsmcat She's no Fanny but she may be just as bad at being in a love-triangle. No idea what to do at all, poor dear. 2mo

Cuilin @BarkingMadRead I‘m trying to figure out if Mrs. Gibson would be upset or pleased??? 🤔 2mo
Bookwormjillk @Cuilin Oh! I didn't even think of that! 2mo
mcctrish @Cuilin this was my first thought too!!!!cuz if daughter is anything like her mother she‘d be bleeding the boy dry 2mo
Clare-Dragonfly @Cuilin Ooh, that makes sense! She‘s definitely too low-born for his dad so that would be why he has to keep her secret. 2mo
Cuilin @mcctrish exactly!!! 2mo
rubyslippersreads @Cuilin @BarkingMadRead I think she might have been pleased before Osborne destroyed the family fortune. 😏 2mo
rubyslippersreads I was worried that Molly would go home without any books. (The worst fate a Litten could imagine!) I‘m glad Roger chose some for her. 2mo
ElizaMarie @Cuilin ooooooo I hope it is her! That would be a perfect twist and explain the $$$$ 2mo
Bklover @rubyslippersreads Me too! I wondered why she set them down. I‘d take as many as I could carry!😉😂 2mo

Lcsmcat @mcctrish Exactly! 2mo
ElizaMarie Call me momma!? WHAT! I do not like this woman! And Again with the Cheese!!! 2mo
Clare-Dragonfly She‘s so annoying! Oh, I‘d be totally happy to keep Betty, if only she would attend to my every whim! 🙄 And can the Gibsons afford this maid she wants to hire? Doesn‘t seem like she‘s thought about what is affordable, just how much she needs to spend to get her away from her current employer. 2mo
julieclair This whole chapter made me sad. 😕 2mo
Bklover @mcctrish You said it!! 😂. Would have been a short book though!! 2mo

willaful Definitely got some Emma echoes in this chapter, with Lord Whassisface being so proud of his “matchmaking.“ If only NotClare was like Mrs. Weston!

Clare-Dragonfly @willaful My thoughts exactly! 2mo
willaful @Bookwormjillk I'm wondering if she actually going to pull off making him happy, just because she's generally so good at it. I'm honestly surprised he's not sick of her already, given he's not much for demonstrations of affection, but then again, he has been single for a long time... 2mo
Ruthiella @willaful @Clare-Dragonfly I thought of Emma too! 😂 And yes to @mcctrish @ElizaMarie SO MANY RED FLAGS 🚩‼️ ⛔️⚠️🚨 2mo

mcctrish @Cuilin you said it!!!! Roger is a star ⭐️ #gettingcinderellavibes 2mo
willaful Ugh, he doesn't know DIDDLY about her actual character! At least we don't have to call her Clare anymore. #UghHyacinth

Roger is a sweetheart. I'm kind of irritated by Molly, but I tend to hate gooey father-daughter relationships. It's not really her fault she's been spoiled.
(edited) 2mo
Bklover @willaful I‘m with you on the gooey relationship with Dad. And Dad appears to be an idiot! It‘s not like he‘s poor and marrying for money! 2mo
willaful @Bklover It's hypocritical of me because I have a gooey mother-daughter relationship, lol. 2mo
Bklover @willaful Me too!!! 2mo
willaful @Bklover 😂 😂 😂 💝 2mo
LiteraryChanteuse Great book, great mini series. 😊 2mo
Ruthiella This is not a good match! 😱 2mo
Lcsmcat @Cuilin 😂🤣😂 So true! 2mo
ElizaMarie That proposal sucked! 2mo
Bookwormjillk I feel like Hyacinth is such a passive aggressive thing to name a character you don‘t like. No offense to any Hyacinths out there. 2mo
julieclair Oh Gibson, Gibson…. SUCH a bad idea. Why didn‘t you ask us first? We‘d have told you not to do it. 😵‍💫 2mo
rubyslippersreads @Bookwormjillk The only Hyacinth I can think of is Hyacinth Bucket. 😆 2mo

mcctrish I just want to acknowledge Jenny, standing up for Bethia who was wrongfully sent to new employment because of Coxe‘s nonsense. And Mr Gibson wishing he could live a life without women. He couldn‘t/wouldnt last a DAY!!!! 2mo
BarkingMadRead @mcctrish yessss I forgot poor Bertha and Jenny #boysaredumb 2mo
Clare-Dragonfly @mcctrish Yes!!! Poor Bethia didn‘t deserve any consequences other than having the letter taken from her. 2mo
julieclair The stage is set for Roger to fall in love with Molly…. 2mo
ElizaMarie I loved this sentence- But fate is a cunning hussy, and builds up her plans as imperceptibly as a bird builds her nest; 2mo

Bookwormjillk Frustrating chapter 3mo
See All 8 Comments
Leftcoastzen It is a frustrating chapter! Maggie left to get the scowls, side eye , etc . Hard times for a woman. She‘s trying to stay strong. 3mo
TheAromaofBooks Like I get why Maggie doesn't want to start over, but at the same time - it feels like she always purposefully chooses the hardest possible path for no real reason. 3mo
Clare-Dragonfly Yes, very frustrating. Dr. Kenn seems to be a kind man. I hope he comes up with a solution that can satisfy Maggie‘s conscience without making the rest of her life miserable. 3mo
eeclayton @TheAromaofBooks it seems like she's internalised the criticism of the community and doesn't feel like she deserves a fresh start. Which is the saddest thing in this book. 2mo

mcctrish I don‘t even know what to think at this point - Maggie won‘t marry Stephen because of Lucy, she can‘t be with Philip because of Tom and his lines in the sand so she will be alone ? There are probably more fish in the sea but we are running out of chapters 3mo
Bookwormjillk Maggie doesn‘t seem to have any good options and now everyone will blame her for Stephen‘s assery. 3mo
See All 13 Comments
dabbe Yep, Maggie gets to go back and face the music while Stephen literally can ride off into the sunset. Damn what these women had to go through in the 1800s! 3mo
Leftcoastzen Oh man ! Poor Maggie! Few choices to begin with and now this ! 3mo
Leftcoastzen Too all ! Enjoying the read along and all the great comments! 3mo
ElizaMarie @dabbe Yes! The 1800s were so brutal for a young woman. She is screwed, Stephen is an ass, he doesn't care about her reputation, and practually blackmails her into marriage for the “sake“ of her reputation - ugh! I hate boys! I feel bad for Maggie. Worried this book will end and she won't find happiness. 3mo
dabbe @ElizaMarie 🩵🎯🩵 3mo
KAO @ElizaMarie @dabbe Agreeing with you on all points!! (edited) 3mo
dabbe @KAO 🎯🩵🎯 3mo
Clare-Dragonfly I would like to give Stephen a smack! I don‘t know what options Maggie has now. Someone saw her and Stephen together who knows them 😨 (I‘m guessing and hoping Ben!) She can‘t even get a decent teaching situation if they hear she‘s been alone with a man. 3mo
kwmg40 What a chapter! Poor Maggie. 3mo
Clare-Dragonfly (Bob, not Ben. I don‘t know if there‘s even a Ben in this book 😂) 3mo
