#ReadAway2024

Went through all of my library renewals on this one so I finally finished it up last night to return today. If you‘re a stone geek & like learning about the history of things, you‘ll probably enjoy this book with about 60 essays about different rocks from jasper to opal to lapis lazuli to moonstone. Although I skimmed some stones & sections more than others, most of the essays are pretty interesting & it‘s a beautiful book.💎🪨🩶

Lindy I read this one slowly, just one or two stones at a time. I think you are correct that it‘s better in print. 3mo
Librarybelle I have such a hard time listening to nonfiction. I can listen to memoirs and travelogues, but everything else…I prefer print. 3mo

jenniferw88 @Librarybelle I'm the opposite - I find my mind wandering if I listen to fiction, unless it grips me from the beginning or the narrator is good. I still prefer print over audio, though! 3mo
Librarybelle I love how everyone responds differently to books and formats! 😁 3mo
jenniferw88 @Lindy, I think I should have only read a few stones at a time, too! 3mo
TheAromaofBooks Great progress!! 3mo
Crazeedi @Librarybelle so funny because non fiction is easier for me to listen to! 3mo
Crazeedi I'm going to look for this one! 3mo

I took my time (9 weeks—the maximum library renewals) to make my way through this collection of stories about all kinds of different rocks. Geology, mythology, ancient texts, contemporary social history, philosophy and more are encompassed in this fascinating collection.

Dyers‘ lists of the late 16th century reveal such appealing shades as sheep‘s colour, motley, new sad colour, puke (a blue-black), devil in the hedge (off-red), pease porridge tawny, and goose-turd green.

This is a lovely exploration of perspective, perception, and the passage of time. A rock can be so much more than a rock-it has a unique purpose for all living things 💗

As I‘ve now got arthritis in my hands I had to get my son to finish my puzzle which I had started last year. There‘s a piece missing which is very annoying! Not sure if we lost it or if it was missing on arrival. I do love the finished puzzle but usually hand them to charity shops when finished which I can‘t do with a missing piece 🙄

hannah-leeloo I love this! 1y
julieclair What a pretty puzzle! Sorry about the arthritis… that is no fun. 1y
Cazxxx @hannah-leeloo It‘s lovely isn‘t it? Such a shame there‘s a piece missing! 1y

I‘ve been reading this one for the past month to get design ideas for our backyard! Wish it had a better variety of examples, a lot of landscaping featured homes on wooded lots. I did find a few useful ideas though, especially to turn our drainage easement into a dry creek bed.

Cinfhen Cool choice 💕 3y
SamAnne Do you have any books you recommend? I probably need one geared towards the dry Inland NW focused on pollinator plants and low water. The earth can‘t support lawns in low water, desert climes. But also looking for good ideas on structure and design! 3y
alisiakae @SamAnne not yet, but I‘ll let you know if I find something. We‘ll be taking away most of our grass for a similar reason, our hot summers aren‘t great for grass either. We plan on planting a lot of trees at the back of our yard where our lot meets the woods. 3y
BarbaraTheBibliophage Planning a project like this is so daunting!! Sorry the book wasn‘t more help. 🌱 3y
