The Silent Patient
The Silent Patient | Alex Michaelides
Famous artist Alicia Berenson shoots her husband in the head five times, and then never speaks again. Five years later, Forensic psychotherapist Theo Faber must find a way to get Alicia to talk if he wants to treat her. Only then can he unravel the shocking events of that tragic night five years before... Sold in over 15 territories, and film rights snapped up by an Oscar winning production company, THE SILENT PATIENT is the most gripping thriller - with the single most shocking twist - of 2019.

This book was well written and full of twists! It‘s a bit darker of a thriller than I‘d normally read but definitely a must read!

I had read The Fury first and then saw reviews for this book after I had read the epilogue and unknowingly read a subtle spoiler. If I hadn‘t heard it was a spoiler, I think it would‘ve been more shocking of a story, but I still recommend it.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Ahw06 @Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks I really did!! I loved the quickness of the chapters, the play-like set up and the unreliable narrator. 3h

It was a little too slow of a slow burn. However, once it took off, I could not put it down. Overall, I thought it was brilliant and I'm glad I finally read it, but I didn't love it and almost DNF'd.

This might be one you just have to read for yourself to form a complete picture. I‘m not sure it *quite* lives up to the unbelievable hype, but it‘s definitely a decent, pacy read for the next time you want some twists and turns in your literary life. Now that I‘ve finally read this, I can understand why everyone went nuts over it but it just didn‘t do anything for me. I didn‘t like the writing, I didn‘t like the characters, I didn‘t like the convoluted plot twists and the endless red herrings. There was so much suspension of disbelief required for the last couple of chapters to make sense. Unfortunately this one got hyped a little too much for me. Hopefully book club will be a good time.

TheLudicReader I agree. I found it easy to read, but endlessly ridiculous. 🤣 2mo

This is the book that got me out of my recent reading slump. I read this around Halloween and it definitely fit the creepy vibes. Loved this psychological thriller and wasn't expecting the plot twist at the end.

What the what?! This was an amazing read, for the most part! Well thought out, but needed at least one more round of editing. The "shower of strings" on the harp took me out of the story briefly. I flew through this in less than 24 hours, staying up way too late to finish it, as it's 3:30 AM...perfect thriller for spooky season if you like psychological novels!

Hoooo boy. I may get some side eye over this, but I felt this book needed about 3 more rounds of editing. Great premise, juicy twists, plenty of red herrings, but when all was said and done, the big reveal left too many plot holes. To really nail your twisty thriller, it has to work forward AND backward, and too many things just didn‘t add up once the misdirection was cleared away. Good effort but sloppy execution. #TrappedinaSpookyHouse

CSeydel Oh and another thing that bothered me was the diary entries. Using Alicia‘s diary to fill in backstory from her perspective was a fine idea, but the diary was written in the exact same voice as Theo‘s first-person narration. The entries include full dialogue and dramatic elements intended to create suspense—in other words, not at all the way someone would record events in a diary. 5mo

I‘m not sure why I keep reading thrillers when I end up feeling disappointed every time.I‘m not usually one of those people who can guess a twist before it happens, but even I had some idea of where this story was going.Story is based on the Greek myth of Alcestis who volunteers to die in her husband‘s place. When she is brought back to life, she refuses to speak ever again.Based on the writing style I could tell the author has written screenplays

BarbaraBB I often feel that way too about thrillers. However I recently read one that I really loved, maybe you‘ll like it too: 6mo

I was told by my colleague that this would ruin all psychological thrillers for me as the twist is so insane.
I'll admit, it's fantastic. It's clever. It's quick paced. It's insane. BUT.... I guessed the twist 🤣🤣 even though I guessed the twist (and it's a fucking GENIUS twist) I still threw the book across the room because of the last chapter! What the fuck was that?!?!

5feet.of.fury I liked this one, but I agree it doesn‘t reinvent the genre IMO 😂 8mo

Also reminded why I'm not drawn to thrillers. Only slept in bits & pieces, reading several times in the middle of the night to keep gathering information throughout the pages. Looking forward to sleeping well tonight, having finished the book.

she.hearts.horror Two things: 1) The narrator seemed like an unreliable narrator ( so that made me question his intention and why wouldn‘t he be helpful if he really didn‘t know anyone?) 2) all of the narrator‘s offhand comments about his wife, their marriage, and cheating ( I figured there had to be a connection between his wife and the SP‘s husband or some other connection… because why else would it matter to the reader?) 8mo

This was very fast paced and busy. I was not overly fussed on the structure of short, snappy sentences throughout the book.

I also couldn‘t connect to any of the characters; there was very little development in that aspect. The lack of depth made what could have been a potential page turner, very disjointed. Events also became unbelievable towards the end.

Another overhyped book from the ‘gram

TheLudicReader Agree that it was overhyped. Easy to read, but neither believable or well-written. 10mo
noseinabookagain @TheLudicReader Even the twist at the end didn‘t add anything for me. I think because I was so not invested by that point 10mo

I know that psychological thrillers are such a popular category, but I just haven‘t read that many, so I wanted to try reading a few. I picked this one to start… and it was the perfect pick! After hearing that this was the greatest twist in a book of all time, my hopes were dashed when I read the reality. The plot was interesting but the twist was too unbelievable for my liking. The characters were all pretty insufferable but that honestly added to the book. Alicia‘s narrative kept me engaged with the novel. Overall, it was an okay fast paced read — nothing I would add to the top of anyones reading list.

Goals part 2-
Finish - These Fleeting Shadows (I‘m pretty far in and will probably finish it commuting tomorrow anyway)
Finish - The Silent Patient (extra credit for my #jumpstart2023 goal)
Start - either Nightbitch or The Witch and the Tsar
And either start another physical book or devote more time to My Heart Is A Chainsaw.
