Alexander and the terrible, horrible, no good, very bad day
Alexander and the terrible, horrible, no good, very bad day | Judith Viorst
98 posts | 188 read | 10 to read
After more than forty years, still the worst day ever! Now a major film starring Steve Carrell, Jennifer Garner and Bella Thorne. Read the inspiration behind the new major film starring Steve Carrell, Jennifer Garner and Bella Thorne. He could tell it was going to be a terrible, horrible, no good, very bad day... He went to sleep with gum in his mouth and woke up with gum in his hair... When he got out of bed, he tripped over his skateboard and by mistake dropped his sweater in the sink while the water was running... What do you do on a day like that? Well, you may think about going to Australia. You may also be glad to find that some days are like that for other people too. This funny and endearing story has delighted readers for more than forty years and is the inspiration behind the upcoming film, starring Jennifer Garner and Steve Carrell.

My thrift store shopping was fruitful ~ paper, stamps, ink, and a book for my personal collection (I often refer to my work days as terrible, horrible, no good, very bad days!) When my son stopped at the hardware, I perused the postcard selection. #LitsyLove 💌

This sweet RF book will be sure to be a favorite for a long time. Follow Alexander as he has a far from ordinary day that helps us all relate to those horrible, no good days.

I would use this as a SR for my students. By reading this book we can discover and facilitate personal coping skills and strategies for our own bad days (9.2)UDL.
For My EL‘s I would do a before reading preview by asking guided questions and review questions for after our reading. A great resource for SR activities is

In this classic RF story, a young boy has a terrible, horrible, no good, very bad day. If it could go wrong, it did! He believes that the solution to all of his problems is to move to Australia. A great award-winning (ALA Notable Children's Book, Reading Rainbow Book, Georgia Children's Picture Storybook Award, Indie's Choice Book Award)book that children, as well as adults, can relate to.

TabathaA This would be best received using RA, using UDL principles 3.2 (highlight patterns, critical features, big ideas, and relationships); as well as 2.5 (illustrate through multiple media). Use along with EL 11 (place language in meaningful context) and 15 (reinforce the key ideas you present again and again). 4y
TabathaA Lesson plan resource: https://www.scholastic.com/teachers/lesson-plans/teaching-content/alexander-and-...

I‘ve been in bed since 9:30 am trying to decide if I have the flu or something more serious, steadfastly refusing to go to urgent care or the ER on Christmas Eve. I haven‘t been able to read at all. On the bright side, I did receive this adorable card from @mellissimo which makes me smile. Thank you, Melanie, for brightening my otherwise miserable day! #litsylove
ETA: thank you all for your concern. I‘m sure I‘ll be ok by Thursday.

Riveted_Reader_Melissa Go to the ER! Having spent a previous Xmas eve in the ER, it‘s actually surprisingly quiet there that night of the year....and a possible heart attack is nothing to fool around with... it‘s totally worth it to miss one Christmas Eve in trade for many future ones. 5y
DGRachel @Riveted_Reader_Melissa I figure after 10 hours of feeling like death warmed over, it‘s probably not a heart attack. I‘m going to try to hydrate better this evening. If I still feel horrid in the morning, I‘ll seriously consider the trip to the ER. Thank you for your concern. 🥰 5y

Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day is a children‘s RF book about a boy named Alexander and how a day he has goes from bad to worse. I would highly recommend it for children and how it can be relatable to anyone that just seems to have a bad day.
#ucflae3414f19

MarkZalewski This website is a great source for activities that can be done in class with the book 5y
MarkZalewski The UDL principle I would apply to this would be, Highlight patterns, critical features, big ideas,
and relationships (3.2). The book helps students to understand the idea that not every day is going to be a good one, and it‘s okay to have a bad day.

Alexander and the Terrible , Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day by Judith Viorst, 1972. Picturebook Black and white are used in illustrations. I think this is a great choice in the attempts to set the mood of the story. Because Alexander is not having a great day, black and white represents a gloom full and dreary day. The author reiterated after every one of Alexander‘s encounter the fact that he was having a terrible horrible no good very bad day

This children‘s book, Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day written by Judith Viorst and illustrated by Ray Cruz, is a very cute children‘s story about a boy named Alexander who goes through a lot of complications through his day and wishes he lived in Australia so that these mishaps wouldn‘t happen. The picture book leads to a very cute ending. #ucflae3414f19

leximcmillin I would use this realistic fiction book as a RA because the expressions that Alexander and the supporting characters in the book can be really fun to use in the classroom. The UDL strategy I would relate to this book is 3.2, Highlight patterns, critical features, big ideas, and relationships. I would use EL strategy #2, promote cooperation. I think it would help a lot for students to talk about that book with each other and say what they did or 5y
leximcmillin didn‘t understand. Standard: https://www.cpalms.org/Public/PreviewStandard/Preview/5709 This is a cool lesson plan relating to theme that connects theme to songs rather than books! https://study.com/academy/popular/theme-lesson-plan.html 5y

DrSpalding This is a classic. Good for you to find two resources! I like the use of music along with quality children‘s literature. This book is meant to be read aloud! I had a student recently perform an interactive read aloud where she provided the children with the map of Australia on a popsicle stick and every time Alexander said it, they all put up their stick and yelled Australia! Very very fun. 5y

We all have those days - things just do not go your way!

When it rains, it pours, and that is exactly what happens to poor Alexander in this book. From his mom forgetting to pack him dessert with his lunch to the shoe store not having the shoes he wants to having to wear his railroad pajamas to bed... it‘s a mess!

Some days are just like that. Even in Australia.

Awesome book for children, and I love the black and white illustrations.

Alexander‘s having a pretty crap day. One thing after another goes wrong. His mother says some days are just like that and if that isn‘t the truest statement, I don‘t know what is. SassyBookworm @GingerAntics thank you! I definitely agree! I never liked drama in high school and I definitely don‘t want any part now! My work partner is already talking about transferring departments 😭 She was as blown away as I was when the office manager never even spoke to us about the situation and made it look like instead of me being the victim I was the instigator and the co-worker was the victim! When she even heard part of what the co-worker said! 6y
GingerAntics Oh now that‘s just wrong. Sounds like she‘s already chosen sides. Lovely. It‘s high school all over again. I‘m just the same. I don‘t like drama. 6y

He's having a terrible, horrible, no good, very bad day ( #BeenThereDoneThat #FeelYourPain) he'd much rather be #SleepingMyDayAway (#PreachAlexander) I too, would like to stay under the covers today but #AdultingCalls #TGIF 🙌🏼 This book has been a family favorite for decades!!!

Well the tagged book represents my feelings about today. A crummy day, probably mostly my own fault, but nevertheless. And here is a photo of one of my favorite bookish items, my beleaguered LightWedge reading light, best book light I‘ve ever had, and they don‘t make them anymore. Anybody else ever have one of these? You can see mine‘s already had a bit of surgery, and now I think it‘s finally given up the ghost. Waaa.

Redwritinghood Yes! That was a pretty good book light. 7y
LibrarianRyan I had one. It lasted about 15 years. I liked how it lit up the page but that was about it. I replaced it with a silicone rechargeable I like much better. 7y
tournevis I wanted one back in the day. Never owned one though. 7y
Chrissyreadit Hope today is better. Your tagged book is one of my favorites. I use it a lot I my head. Some days are just like that. 7y
CSeydel @LibrarianRyan it‘s definitely too bulky and awkward to hold. But the light is the best. I hate the way my clip-on light glares in my eyes. What light do you use now? (edited) 7y
CSeydel @VelvetSpade To be honest I really only used it occasionally. Just a few weekends a year, for camping. It was perfect for that! 7y
CSeydel @Ddzmini omg that would be amazing! 😄 7y
CSeydel @cobwebmoth @NeesyBeth @TricksyTails thanks! Fortunately (in my case) it‘s nothing serious. Just faceplant type stuff. Hope you have a great day today! 7y

Ok, so the day wasn't as bad as all that, but I'm ready for March to be over. Big project at work w/strict deadline & those above my pay grade keep changing the script for the instructional video I'm supposed to produce. Worked more overtime than I wanted & came home to this. Not sure what I was supposed to be receiving... big sigh.

Pickpick

My favorite!! This realistic fiction book is a great for S or RA. This book is about a boy named Alexander who is having a really bad day. He gets gum stuck in his hair, no dessert for lunch, no prize in his cereal..etc. But he has to overcome those obstacles and realize that every once in awhile everyone has a bad day but it gets better! This book was actually made into a movie and it was super cute! Steve Carell and Jennifer Gardner star in it.

V.DeQuattro Attached is a great lesson to go along with this book! It talks about students emotions and how they might have had a terrible, horrible, no good very bad day 😑🤕🤢🤧😪😭😤 https://www.scholastic.com/teachers/lesson-plans/teaching-content/alexander-and-... 7y
V.DeQuattro EL strategy 4 is great with this lesson! We link the lesson topic to students prior knowledge of when they had a bad day. A great UDL strategy would be 3.1. Students can tell about a time they had a bad day. #UCFLAE3414 7y
DrSpalding You can‘t go wrong with Scholastic. Nice alignment. Make sure you add SP18 to the #. 7y

Laura.S @V.DeQuattro this book looks so cute! It‘s so important to have books with lessons other than academics. Reading this to the students would teach them a life lesson about not getting upset over one thing and not letting it ruin your day. 7y
JenniferMc A favorite of my kids! You could use this as a lesson for a few subjects. 7y
BriannaR I love this movie. Also, great resource, it'll be a fun to use during class. 7y
