Read this because the author based one of the characters on AJ Finn (author of Woman in the Window). Plot is bonkers but knowing that real-world inspiration made it fun.

Meh. Didn‘t like this. Didn‘t work for me. Didn‘t like anyone in it. Not bad or poorly written, just not my thing.
Latest mystery read
Did I have a bad weekend at work? Yes. Did I compensate by buying a bunch of books? Also yes. Do I regret it? Not a jot.
A toss up between a pick and a so-so for me but ultimately I did get surprised by the murderer so it gets a pick. A bit slow to start and so many characters were introduced immediately that I was writing them down to keep track. I found I wasn‘t paying attention in parts and had to reread over some pages which meant that it didn‘t grab me as an AG book usually does but it was skillfully written and the AH-HA moment got me in the end.
Enjoyable and a quick read, although maybe not up to the standard of the late great Agatha Christie. Full review here: https://thecuriousmagpie2018.wordpress.com/2019/11/12/review-the-closed-casket-b...
I really like these “new Poirot” books. The Hastings stand-in is Catchpole, and he‘s significantly less stupid in this second book. (It always made me crazy how clueless Hastings always was.) Classic family melodrama with a good helping of secrets and lies.
The whole article is a wild ride about Dan Mallory aka AJ Finn, author of the enormously successful Woman in the Window. https://www.newyorker.com/magazine/2019/02/11/a-suspense-novelists-trail-of-dece...
A much better book than the previous one, it has a much tighter plot and character improvements. Catchpool is nowhere near as dimwitted (that role reserved for a local policeman this time), and the Playfords are an entertainingly ghastly lot.
4 🌟
Pros: Some good dialogue and amusing over-the-top characters. Cons: the pacing was off and I did not find the killer's motive all that convincing
I enjoyed this book. It was fun and I found it a good entry in the Poirot world. Perfect beach read.
Getting ready for a few vacation reads
Finished this on my #audiowalk and I really enjoyed it! Seems people are upset it's not "Christie" but I don't think it should be. I think the characters were enjoyable, the plot fun and twisty as per genre standards, and I liked the more modern sententiments the characters had.
Started this for my #audiowalk adventures! Honestly, didn't realise this was the 2.0 version of Hercule Poirot but I am really enjoying it, especially Detective Catchpool!
Who let Agatha Christie‘s name on this dribble?? Too long.... really good narrator but not enough to save this book 👎🏽
The problem with having to choose a book in a hurry, I miss the details.... 🤦🏻♀️Bamboozled by the cover, thought it was actual Agatha Christie book but quickly realized something was amiss 🧐 on the drive to work 🚙(audio book)🚗. Was annoyed 😒 but sticking with it as not terrible but NOT Agatha Christie 📚📚📚
I liked this one, but didn‘t love it. I‘d give it three and a half stars. The plot was convoluted enough to be worthy of Agatha Christie, and it kept me interested. I felt like I wanted more Hercule Poirot in it, as he is one of my favorite literary characters. Overall I enjoyed it enough to check out others in this series.
My last book in the 2017 and the first one in 2018.
In spite of some things that I didn‘t like, especially how the narrator is introduced in the beginning of the story, it is a nice cozy mystery book, with enough interesting characters, which are of course all potential killers, and sufficiently intriguing plot that I read it in two seatings .⭐️⭐⭐ from me, but it is still🤘 if you want some easy, uncomplicated story. #booked2018 #cozymystery
Extravaganza on Sunday morning - breakfast in bed (French toast with brown sugar and cinnamon, fresh blueberries and raspberries, English breakfast tea with cream) before the madness begins and of course - a new book🤓
First read of the Holiday Adventure-a-Thon! Challenge: Read a book with Red on the cover.
This was no Agatha Christie. Not a bad mystery, but not on the same level as Agatha and her Hercule Poirot. She was a one of a kind mystery writer and her style cannot be matched or duplicated.
Kids are out playing in the snow. Looks like I probably have a good half hour to myself. ❄️
A little upside downside here... Hannah has done quite well to mimic Christie's Poirot character. The dialogue and actions from Poirot are familiar, even evolved perhaps. But, the plot was not the perfect combination of comfortable suspense and surprise that I turn to Christie for. One of the characters here even defends her own slightly clumsy mystery stories. So, I'm happy there are more Poirot novels, but there's a small crack in the universe.
I love the Agatha Christie Poirot mysteries but this one seems to be trying a bit too hard. The character of Poirot is ok but the plot/mystery is much too convoluted. Probably could have been a bit shorter as well.
Being an avid Agatha and Poirot fan I was excited to see Sophie's take on a Poirot story, I wasn't disappointed! #poirot
My book ban went by the wayside 😭 but I got the Closed Casket hardback by Sophie Hannah for half price #Bargain - and that cover is just 😍😍😍
Sometimes it‘s better to let sleeping dogs lie, or dead writers stay dead. Closed Casket by Sophie Hannah, writing as Agatha Christie, is a good example of the latter. When I found myself unable to get through more than one chapter at time before starting to yawn, I should have realized it wasn‘t me. The more I read, the less I liked this story. See http://itsallaboutthebook.org for a full review.
Another fun #quote from the new #Christie: "My achievements are recognized by nobody but me." #mystery #amreading
I love Mr. Poirot and his tiny weirdness, even/also the under pen. The book was released in September last year and I completely missed this out. And yes, it's still in my TBR pile...

This author clearly knows Agatha Christie well. I really enjoyed this book. It had a good mystery and a very good reveal.
Tried several times to get into this but just couldn't. Once upon a time I would have read to the end. Not anymore. Too many other books waiting to be read! I could hear Poirot speaking in my head--- the TV version and that got a bit annoying. I much prefer reading the real Agatha Christie.
Mrs. Marple and Mr. Poirot, reading about their adventures is my happy place...and I like Mr.Poirot by S.Hannah too.
Closed Casket is from today's #bookmail and I hope that I will like it.

In the mood for some Agatha Christie? We love CLOSED CASKET, a new Hercule Poirot from Sophie Hannah.
Sunday morning. You can't see the coffee because it's in my hand. It's glorious and sunny outside but I'm still tucked away in my Jammies. #Poirot #cozymystery #mystery#booksandcoffee
New Poirot. So far so good. #cozymystery
What I learned at @HarperCollins today. I'd say you've done fairly well as an author if the Bible and Shakespeare are your only competition. New book for the stack!
Sophie Hannah is not Agatha Christie but I did enjoy the setting and the mystery. Why she named a suspect Sophie, distracted me for quite awhile. Instead of thinking about the murder I was wondering about the name. Kudos for not using the word spats.
Escaping the election coverage and started reading . Just started it so not sure if I'll like it. I couldn't help thinking about the time I took a picture of Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. Thought I would share his smile (again)
You know a book's going to be good when it starts like this.
#photoadaynov16 #Novembertbr I'm hoping to finish some of the books I started earlier this year and read these as well . I just hope the word "spats" doesn't come up too often in this book ?
I mean, I know on some level it's just estate-authorized fan fiction, but stiiiiiill.
Bags checked, security checked, bar found, wine in hand.... getting stuck into the new Poirot... only a a couple of hours and I'll be on my way home to UK to visit for the first time in 4 years..... btw... Miami airport sucks hard... 😐
I'm a massive Christie fan, and I enjoyed this new Poirot mystery. The atmosphere was pretty similar, and I like the Catchpool character ( though not as much as Hastings!). I thought this mystery and the solution were much better than The Monogram Murders, which I found disappointing.
"You Englishman! However strong the emotion, however fierce the fury, stronger still is the desire to smother it, to pretend it was never there at all."
Poirot hits the nail on the head and we're only 30 pages in!! ?
