Ok, I get that editors aren‘t perfect, but with these back-to-back sentences, I‘m trying to figure out whether the cat is a “he” or a “she”…🤷🏻‍♀️🤣🤣🤣

It‘s a conundrum…and yes, these are the things I ponder. 🧐🙄

PSA: This is NOT book related. 😂

This is the view from my front porch this morning…8 inches here in North Alabama.
I know, I know…but this is a BIG DEAL for us southerners, folks. 😳🤍☃️

To finish up 2024 I had 3 5⭐️ contenders…two from the same series and the other second in another series.

This was a hard choice for favorite, but I‘m giving that to the tagged book. I really loved everything about it…well written, great world building, well fleshed out characters, etc.

Looking forward to reading more in both these series!

Thanks for the walk down memory lane, Andrew. 😊

August saw 3 5⭐️ books for me and obviously a Kim Stone binge! 😂😂 But IMO if you‘re going to binge, it‘s hard to beat Kim. 🩷 Her Dying Truth case was an especially heartbreaking one to get through.

However I‘m going to pick the tagged book as my favorite as it had all the feels and felt more like an epic than a regular novel. Not great ratings here on Litsy, but I really enjoyed it.

A Deadly Scandal was a great addition to a fave series.

I‘m happy to have discovered this fantasy series and enjoyed this one so much I‘ve already read the second one. Lara is one of 12 princesses, half sisters raised as warriors in a secret desert compound with the main objective of bringing down Aren, a rival king of the Bridge Kingdom who basically controls trade. Following her arranged marriage to Aren, she uses her cunning and skills to spy and smuggle out information for invasion to her father.🔻

robinb But after she finds herself falling for the king and his people, and when her father‘s army invades, she finds herself labeled a traitor and banished by Aren himself. Heartbroken and guilt-ridden she later learns that her husband has been taken prisoner, both to force the surrender of his kingdom and to lure Lara out of hiding so her father can kill her. I loved everything about this story, the rich characters, the adventurous plot, the romance.🔻 2mo

This 5th and last in series was a sad and heartbreaking murder mystery with the victim a former West Indies planter. While revolving around the British slave trade, particularly in the West Indies (1785), there were some uplifting and hopeful moments as well. This debut suspense novel is the story of a group of folks stranded on Trouble Island, a stop-off place for prohibition criminals between Canada and the US (Lake Erie). Pretty much all of them are keeping secrets and are morally gray characters with plenty of double-crossing going on. The story is told through the eyes of Aurelia Escalante, the maid to the wife of the powerful criminal prohibition gangster Eddie McGee, who has been basically 🔻

robinb subjected to servitude via blackmail. I won't go into more details so as not to mention spoilers, but there are deaths galore and any number of suspects.
I found this book just average because of a few over-the-top scenarios and also, I felt from the beginning that I was thrown into a narrative that I was already supposed to be well versed in. The ending also seemed farfetched and threw me for a loop. So, while aspects of the book 🔻

I really enjoyed the first in series, and I must say that I think this one was even better. I think often the first book in establishing a series can be a bit tedious with all the details, backstories, etc. But both books have been entertaining and engrossing and not the least bit tedious. This finds Catriona struggling as she has lost her reporter job and is coming to terms with her new engagement. She throws herself into charitable work 🔻

robinb assisting a nurse friend with her work in a medical dispensary for the less fortunate. When a body is found by some local impoverished children, she feels compelled to look into it...which of course is what Inspector Marlowe is doing.
Twists and turns and a bit of a surprise villain, this book provided a deeper dive into characters, and Duke's descriptions of the place setting are very vivid and detailed. I was left with a bewildering 🔻
(edited) 2mo
robinb view of a turn in Catriona's character at the end of the first book, but it was fleshed out and resolved here. Both Catriona and Marlowe are complicated characters who have struggles to overcome, and I look forward to watching them do just that.

I was happy to discover this debut author‘s first in series historical mystery set in London. I was so happy with it that I went ahead and read the next book immediately after. Catriona Winters is a young woman working at her father‘s newspaper who struggles to be taken seriously and treated with respect in her field of journalism. She‘s a bit on the rebellious side (which will eventually lead to her banishment from the office) and 🔻

robinb unbeknownst to her father she begins to investigate the drowning of an aristocrat that she knows. She runs up against Scotland Yard Inspector Thomas Marlowe at the scene and thus begins a bit of a rivalry to solve the case which of course, leads to an attraction. There‘s blackmail, murder, intriguing underworld criminals, addiction, unrequited love, greed…and a bit of a cliffhanger which really threw me and was the only part of the story that 🔻 2mo

So happy to have discovered this mystery series set in 1815 London. It‘s fun (with a smart, unabashedly original and funny heroine), has great storylines so far and introduces Lady Petra, a confident and courageous young woman for her time.

robinb that might be linked to a radical group with ties to the aristocracy. A plot to topple the monarchy is uncovered and a dangerous and possibly deadly situation ensues.
Lady Petra and Duncan are so sweet to watch as they take their lifelong friendship in another direction. Of course there‘s the occasional butting of heads and disagreements, but underneath that is a strong and loyal bond. Another great mystery series to keep up with and enjoy. 🔻

When I began this book, I had not done any research on it and did not know that it was a "cozy". I'm glad that I did not as that might have put me off reading it (I'm not a big cozy fan).

Alice Beeton (50+), as the owner of the Good Household Management Agency and descendant of the famous authoress Mrs. Beeton (The Book of Household Management) discreetly meets the needs for top household staff for the rich and influential. She is normally very?

robinb scrupulous in her background research on the staff she employs, however when she is caught in an emergency situation for her client Camille Messent, she sends out the mysterious but seemingly qualified Enya to serve as a housekeeper for the wealthy couple. However, when murders begin racking up connected to the play, both ladies go undercover to try and flush out the dastardly villain(s). With their lives in peril, 🔻

robinb the two must call on their male counterparts/friends to step in for assistance.
I really liked that Prudence and Judith were the "stars" of the show in this one. I also thought it clever how it seemed that the victims were being chosen. A delightful novella in the time travel series, I really enjoyed this one set around Mallory's first Christmas in Victorian Edinburgh and showcasing Duncan's former love, Lady Inglis. The villain wants a payoff, or the letters will be released to the press. I loved that this storyline was a bit ?

robinb awkward to navigate for Mallory and Duncan personally and that surprisingly Mallory was the one who was adamant about helping Lady Inglis in her difficulties. robinb fall in love with and cheer for as they complement the other's abilities in solving crimes. They are a good team and work well together as they each have their own unique strengths and contributions to add to their investigations.

I'm looking forward to seeing where their adventures lead next. 4/5⭐️

This book was exciting, romantic and adventurous with the heroine Nieve definitely one to root for.
The story revolves around Nieve, a member of the Talin race who are hidden mages who harness the power of their Ocean deity. She is an outcast as she is the only member of her village without powers. As the Ocean's powers begin to wane, the Talin's struggle with a dying environment (food shortages, etc.), and Nieve, in order to prove herself 🔻

robinb worthy as a contributing member of a magical race, vows to find the answers and set things straight. She meets a swaggering and mysterious pirate, Keir, who provides support and assistance along her heroic quest.
What I loved most about this story was Nieve's determination, loyalty and strength. While starting out as a way to save her village from starvation and proving her worth as a non-magical member, she becomes so much more. Her self-image 🔻

robinb begins to change, her confidence grows, and she finds self-worth as she is exposed to a greater world outside her own. And with Keir by her side (as well as other wonderfully crafted side characters), her potential is limitless.

Very nicely done, and I'm hoping there might be more from Nieve as she's the kind of endearing and cheer-worthy heroine that I'd like to see more of.

And yes, she does it once again. Long proves why she‘s my number one pick in historical romance.

My review is EXTREMELY long (see what I did there? LOL), so I‘ll post my GR review link here if anyone‘s interested.
