Love me some Ruby Vaughn. 🧡

My review on this one is rather long (it‘s a definite 5⭐️ for me), so if you‘re interested, here‘s the GR link:

And I‘d recommend starting with its predecessor The Curse of Penryth Hall to get the full effect. 😉

This debut suspense novel is the story of a group of folks stranded on Trouble Island, a stop-off place for prohibition criminals between Canada and the US (Lake Erie). Pretty much all of them are keeping secrets and are morally gray characters with plenty of double-crossing going on. The story is told through the eyes of Aurelia Escalante, the maid to the wife of the powerful criminal prohibition gangster Eddie McGee, who has been basically 🔻

robinb subjected to servitude via blackmail. I won't go into more details so as not to mention spoilers, but there are deaths galore and any number of suspects.
I found this book just average because of a few over-the-top scenarios and also, I felt from the beginning that I was thrown into a narrative that I was already supposed to be well versed in. The ending also seemed farfetched and threw me for a loop. So, while aspects of the book 🔻

I really enjoyed the first in series, and I must say that I think this one was even better. I think often the first book in establishing a series can be a bit tedious with all the details, backstories, etc. But both books have been entertaining and engrossing and not the least bit tedious. This finds Catriona struggling as she has lost her reporter job and is coming to terms with her new engagement. She throws herself into charitable work 🔻

robinb assisting a nurse friend with her work in a medical dispensary for the less fortunate. When a body is found by some local impoverished children, she feels compelled to look into it...which of course is what Inspector Marlowe is doing.
Twists and turns and a bit of a surprise villain, this book provided a deeper dive into characters, and Duke's descriptions of the place setting are very vivid and detailed. I was left with a bewildering 🔻
(edited) 2w
robinb view of a turn in Catriona's character at the end of the first book, but it was fleshed out and resolved here. Both Catriona and Marlowe are complicated characters who have struggles to overcome, and I look forward to watching them do just that.

Well done and hope to see more soon. 4.25/5⭐️

I was happy to discover this debut author‘s first in series historical mystery set in London. I was so happy with it that I went ahead and read the next book immediately after. Catriona Winters is a young woman working at her father‘s newspaper who struggles to be taken seriously and treated with respect in her field of journalism. She‘s a bit on the rebellious side (which will eventually lead to her banishment from the office) and 🔻

robinb unbeknownst to her father she begins to investigate the drowning of an aristocrat that she knows. She runs up against Scotland Yard Inspector Thomas Marlowe at the scene and thus begins a bit of a rivalry to solve the case which of course, leads to an attraction. There‘s blackmail, murder, intriguing underworld criminals, addiction, unrequited love, greed…and a bit of a cliffhanger which really threw me and was the only part of the story that 🔻 2w
robinb bothered me. I felt Catriona caved on something that she had decided against and didn‘t really understand why. I won‘t lie, I left the book feeling disappointment in her.

Overall, I really enjoyed this and am happy to add it to my TBR series list. 4.25/5⭐️

So happy to have discovered this mystery series set in 1815 London. It‘s fun (with a smart, unabashedly original and funny heroine), has great storylines so far and introduces Lady Petra, a confident and courageous young woman for her time.
Lady Petra shockingly discovers that her current paramour Duncan Shawcross might have murdered her fiancé three years earlier. She‘s also tasked by Queen Charlotte with an undercover assignment into a death ?

robinb that might be linked to a radical group with ties to the aristocracy. A plot to topple the monarchy is uncovered and a dangerous and possibly deadly situation ensues.
Lady Petra and Duncan are so sweet to watch as they take their lifelong friendship in another direction. Of course there‘s the occasional butting of heads and disagreements, but underneath that is a strong and loyal bond. Another great mystery series to keep up with and enjoy. 🔻

Second in the Dr. Julia Lewis mystery series set in the Victorian era, and I‘m still enjoying Dr. Julia‘s strength and determination in forging inroads as Scotland Yard‘s first female medical examiner. She is supported by the intelligent and upstanding Detective Inspector Richard Tennant. Love them both and how they complement each other in their jobs.
This mystery involves the art world, specifically a group of female artists and artist 🔻

robinb models who are being targeted and threatened. A well thought out plot that kept me guessing on the villain.

I hope that this series continues as it‘s smart, interesting and entertaining. 4.25/5⭐️

Another good outing for American heiress Stella and her new husband Lyndy as they journey to visit some of Stella‘s never-before-met relatives and also attend a prestigious golf tournament. With unexpected guests, murderous deeds (there is some offscreen sexual abuse as well), and Lyndy‘s perceived guilt there‘s a lot going on. Definitely more sad parts than usual but well crafted and an enjoyable read. 4.25/5⭐️

When I began this book, I had not done any research on it and did not know that it was a "cozy". I'm glad that I did not as that might have put me off reading it (I'm not a big cozy fan).

Alice Beeton (50+), as the owner of the Good Household Management Agency and descendant of the famous authoress Mrs. Beeton (The Book of Household Management) discreetly meets the needs for top household staff for the rich and influential. She is normally very?

robinb scrupulous in her background research on the staff she employs, however when she is caught in an emergency situation for her client Camille Messent, she sends out the mysterious but seemingly qualified Enya to serve as a housekeeper for the wealthy couple. As Enya is inexplicably murdered shortly after she begins her job, Alice and her office friends and community acquaintances jump in to aid the police in their investigation. 🔻 3w

I'm always excited when another book releases in the Gilded Age mystery series, and as usual, this one doesn't disappoint.
Prudence is called upon by a friend to help protect her cousin's rights as a playwright for the authorship of a play that promises to be big at the box office. However, when murders begin racking up connected to the play, both ladies go undercover to try and flush out the dastardly villain(s). With their lives in peril, 🔻

robinb the two must call on their male counterparts/friends to step in for assistance.
I really liked that Prudence and Judith were the "stars" of the show in this one. I also thought it clever how it seemed that the victims were being chosen. And the denouement was totally original and not what I was expecting...loved it! There is also some movement on the personal front for Prudence and Geoffrey which is heartwarming and swoon worthy...especially ?

A delightful novella in the time travel series, I really enjoyed this one set around Mallory's first Christmas in Victorian Edinburgh and showcasing Duncan's former love, Lady Inglis. Mallory and Duncan are asked to uncover the identity of a blackmailer and recover risqué love letters between Lady Inglis and a friend with benefits. The villain wants a payoff, or the letters will be released to the press. I loved that this storyline was a bit ?

robinb awkward to navigate for Mallory and Duncan personally and that surprisingly Mallory was the one who was adamant about helping Lady Inglis in her difficulties. I also commend the author on something that I think must be very difficult to achieve with a novella...presenting a clear, concise and thorough story that leaves the reader happy and satisfied. I didn't feel rushed or left hanging but simply entertained. Well done! 4.5/5⭐️ 3w

I enjoyed this adventure in Romansy.
Strong heroine, a bit of an arrogant (but sweet) hero, deadly monsters, great banter, and oh yeah, dragons (although I think we‘ll see more of them in the next book).

I am still enjoying this series and plan to continue with it as it goes along. I especially enjoyed the plotline in this one, very twisty and turny and tension filled. As in the previous outing, I still wished for more fleshing out of the heroine, Gemma, but I'm becoming more and more excited and intrigued by how Gemma and Sebastian's relationship will continue to bloom. They are both empathetic and good-hearted characters and are easy to 🔻

robinb fall in love with and cheer for as they complement the other's abilities in solving crimes. They are a good team and work well together as they each have their own unique strengths and contributions to add to their investigations.

I'm looking forward to seeing where their adventures lead next. 4/5⭐️

This book was exciting, romantic and adventurous with the heroine Nieve definitely one to root for.
The story revolves around Nieve, a member of the Talin race who are hidden mages who harness the power of their Ocean deity. She is an outcast as she is the only member of her village without powers. As the Ocean's powers begin to wane, the Talin's struggle with a dying environment (food shortages, etc.), and Nieve, in order to prove herself 🔻

robinb worthy as a contributing member of a magical race, vows to find the answers and set things straight. She meets a swaggering and mysterious pirate, Keir, who provides support and assistance along her heroic quest.
What I loved most about this story was Nieve's determination, loyalty and strength. While starting out as a way to save her village from starvation and proving her worth as a non-magical member, she becomes so much more. Her self-image 🔻
3w
robinb begins to change, her confidence grows, and she finds self-worth as she is exposed to a greater world outside her own. And with Keir by her side (as well as other wonderfully crafted side characters), her potential is limitless.

Very nicely done, and I'm hoping there might be more from Nieve as she's the kind of endearing and cheer-worthy heroine that I'd like to see more of.

I liked the premise of this book set in Regency England...original, spooky, kind of Gothic...also included great atmospheric world-building. There are also some false herrings thrown in to muddy the waters between the "good guys" and the villains...some surprised me, some I saw coming.
There were parts of the book that dragged a little for me...not a lot going on. And I must admit to some frustration and disappointment with how the main ?

robinb character Merrick handled some of the situations she found herself in. I found her waffling a bit much between a strong, brave heroine and a meek doormat.

Overall, I did enjoy this book and thought it was very well done from a debut author. I'll look forward to more from her. 4/5⭐️

I'm really enjoying the Kate Shugak series, so I thought I'd give this one a try.
While I'm sure it's not fair to compare the two series, I must admit that I would give the Shugak series the edge. While this first in series was fine, I did not connect as well with the main lead. I found Liam Campbell's a bit naive, a bit immature for his age and just a bit unlikable at times. All of that said, I would be willing to give the second

robinb book a go as I believe sometimes the first in series can be hard for an author getting characters, background, place setting, etc. set up and still be engaging enough for a reader.

This installment had me laughing out loud for a good chunk of the story.
Kate finds herself working as a roustabout for an oil company in AK. As much as she‘s conflicted about the environmental issues, she can‘t walk away from the money offered to shut down a drug ring that‘s causing havoc and even death. After she arrives she also discovers artifacts are being stolen and sold for an exorbitant profit. She finds herself unexpectedly enjoying 🔻

robinb her time there…good food, new/mostly nice folks, a different locale. Also, on her time off she stays with Jack, her lover. But as she spends time in a city and finds herself being “spoiled” at the base camp, she begins to miss her isolated cabin, her alone time and her self-sufficiency. Even though this one was not as action-heavy as some prior outings, the humor and more focus on Kate‘s personality/thoughts were a welcome addition. Well done. 4.5 1mo

This felt like a supernatural, almost Gothic-like thriller.
This is a dual timeline story stretching from the main character's teenage years to current day (my preference being the younger Nicola's story). But while the writing and plotline were OK, I did have some frustrations with Nicola as I didn't feel much connection with her and became exasperated with her wishy-washy attitude toward the "ghost" aspect of the story. Yes, she sought out ⬇️

robinb evidence of the supernatural, but she seemed a bit blase about it at times. And yes, this is fiction, but I definitely had to suspend my belief during the denouement.

So, while it did work on some levels with me, it wasn't quite as great as I had hoped in others...but not a bad read. 3.5/5⭐️

In this second in series, we have a change of scenery as Ellie and Adam have traveled to Egypt in an effort to find a holy relic before a ruthless gang of antiquity art thieves, the same nefarious group from their prior adventure. We are introduced to Ellie's archaeologist brother Neil (Adam's best friend) on the fateful dig, and Constance (Ellie's best friend) who's along for the ride and trying to avoid her matchmaking mother.

robinb I really enjoyed this one! Lots of action, lots of historical detail, and lots of romance. However, I was a bit confused/surprised by the intensity of the romance from the very beginning of the story. I was not expecting that judging from the ending of the previous adventure. I'm not complaining (I love Adam and Ellie's chemistry/banter, and it was definitely on showcase here), it just took a little change of mindset on my part for them to ⬇️ 2mo
robinb be that far along in that department already. My only other call out was Neil's character. I felt he was a bit overdone in his "bumbling" academic role, and he actually tended to get on my nerves with his nonsensical portrayal. Another good addition to this historical mystery series.
I sensed some possible changes in the storyline going forward as one character, in particular, seemed to be having some personal issues (or perhaps just some questioning of their lives), and if I'm reading that correctly, I wonder where that arc might lead.
This one pretty much involved ALL of the characters, and I love to see that as Penrose has some interesting and entertaining ⬇️

robinb side characters she has developed. And as it takes place around the wedding celebration of two of the most beloved side characters, this one is extra special for that alone.
There's a good bit of historical data, which at times can get a little overwhelming/distracting, but I also found much of it enlightening as well. Exciting, intense denouement. And as always, I'll look forward to the next outing for Wrexford & Sloane. 4/5⭐️

This was a cute but kind of average romance for me...with some added depth. It was definitely a slow burn which is one of my favorite tropes, but sometimes it felt a little too slow.
The depth came from both main characters as one was dealing with guilt and grief (both her own and others close to her), and the other was dealing with social issues and emotional abuse. I enjoyed watching as these two began to see outside themselves, recognize ⬇️

robinb each other's needs/pain and step in to provide support and eventually love...that's what I really take away from this story. Not high scorers here unfortunately. The Stormwalker series are pretty much fluff with some action but too much sex (🙄) and some cringy, awkwardly sexist dialogue between the mains.

The Webb book was a disappointment for me. I‘ve always loved her various series (dark, gritty), but even though this is a fairly recent one, it felt more like a beginning effort from an author just getting her feet wet. 😔
