We Solve Murders
We Solve Murders: A Novel | Richard Osman
A brand new series. An iconic new detective duo. And a puzzling new murder to solve... Steve Wheeler is enjoying retired life. He does the odd bit of investigation work, but he prefers his familiar habits and routines: the pub quiz, his favorite bench, his cat waiting for him when he comes home. His days of adventure are over: adrenaline is daughter-in-law Amys business now. Amy Wheeler thinks adrenaline is good for the soul. As a private security officer, she doesnt stay still long enough for habits or routines. Shes currently on a remote island keeping world-famous author Rosie DAntonio alive. Which was meant to be an easy job... Then a dead body, a bag of money, and a killer with their sights on Amy have her sending an SOS to the only person she trusts. A breakneck race around the world begins, but can Amy and Steve stay one step ahead of a lethal enemy?

Read this 4 book club. I haven‘t read Thursday Murder Club (TMC) series yet, but plan to on audiobook. Idk what Osman‘s style of writing is in TMC but at times here it came off as trying too hard to be funny or maybe I don‘t have the right sense of humor. It was overall enjoyable & I liked the characters enough although at times there seemed like too many. I would read the 2nd in this series, but don‘t think I‘d buy it. I‘m eager for TMC though!

1-19-25: My 5th finished book of 2025! Written by the author of The Thursday Murder Club, is a new series. Amy, a body guard, Steve her father in law and Rosie the famous author, set out on an adventure around the globe to solve a case involving the murders of several influencers on Instagram. Steve is a retired cop and not involved in much until Amy starts getting implicated in the murders. And Rosie, she is along for the ride. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️📖#️⃣5️⃣

See, I knew I‘d end up flying through this one. It was a fast read and so, so good.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

CBee It makes me so happy that you‘ve enjoyed what you‘ve read off my list so far! I‘m trying to decide what to read of yours next - I think “The Road to Dalton.” 1d
monalyisha @CBee I‘ve got that one checked out from the library right now! I thought I might bring it with me to Maine but there were too many good choices! I brought 4 books and only ended up opening one (aside from my poetry book, which I really just dipped into). Isn‘t that the way? 😅🙈 1d
CSeydel @CBee Based on what I know of your literary taste, I think you will really enjoy it. It‘s well-written and poignant. @monalyisha It would have been fun to read in Maine! 1d

CBee @monalyisha I think the universe is telling me to move to Maine 😂 I‘ve read two books set there in the past two months 🤷‍♀️ @CSeydel I‘m enjoying it so far! 19h
monalyisha @CBee It feels like a popular setting at the moment! As a New Englander, I‘ve got my state allegiances and Maine has never been one of them (born & raised in MA, college in VT, currently living in RI)…but lately, I keep ending up there on weekend getaways, somehow! Specifically, Mid-Coast Maine (near Wicassett). 19h
CBee @monalyisha honestly I think I‘d be happier anywhere but here (Alabama). I‘ve thought about Vermont, NH, Mass, all of it 🤷‍♀️ Probably a pipe dream but, it‘s a dream 😂 17h
monalyisha @CBee I get it! I don‘t think we‘ll ever leave New England. If our state lines weren‘t so close, I‘d say we might never leave Rhode Island. My husband‘s work (photography) is all word of mouth & network-building. He‘s spent the last decade+ building his business. If we left, he‘d have to start from scratch. My pipe dream is leaving the US. I think I could thrive as a middle-of-nowhere girl but he‘d lose it without ample opportunities to socialize. 8h
monalyisha @CBee Despite the high cost of living, though (which doesn‘t align super well with our artsy/non-profit spirits 🙈 - we still rent and may always), there are definitely worse places to land. If we‘re stuck, being stuck in Rhode Island isn‘t so bad. 🩵 I hope you get to spread your wings! 🪽 8h

I enjoyed The Thursday Murder Club, but I thought ehhh, this one probably won‘t be as good as that one, right? No. Wrong. It‘s top tier, really hilarious and touching and action-packed and very English (but in the endearing way, not the annoying way). I‘m enjoying it so much that I can‘t stop reading it, and that makes me sad that I‘ll be done with it too soon.

Ruthiella Yes! Agree that this is a promising start! 2d
CBee I thought the same and ended up pleasantly surprised! So glad you‘re loving it!! Did you read the entire TMC series? 2d
CSeydel @CBee Just the first two so far, but I enjoyed them both very much! 2d

Very much enjoyed this launch of a new series. I loved these characters and Osman's humor and style are very much intact. And while I'm not a big audiobook person, more like this might help convert me. We recently moved and it's certainly made the unpacking more enjoyable.

Ruthiella I love audio books for making chores more palatable! It is, however, important to find the right kind of book for you. I need, for example, very plot forward books when I listen. 2w

I was a little worried I wouldn't like this since I fell in love with Elizabeth, Joyce, Ibrahim, and Ron, the Thursday Murder Club bunch, but I needn't have worried. Steve, Amy, and Rosie are wonderful, and the somewhat madcap adventure felt familiarly entertaining. Now I have two series by this author to look forward to continuing! It was a great book to start 2025!

November was probably my best reading month & it was so hard to pick just one #12BooksOf2024 but I‘m going to go with *We Solve Murders. The Thursday Murder Club is a favorite series & while this one isn‘t quite there (yet), it was still delightful.

Honorable Mentions are: *Neighbors and Other Stories, *Annie Bot, *Shark Heart, Somewhere Beyond the Sea, Dinner for Vampires & The Age of Magical Overthinking

*All on my #AuldLangSpine list.

Ruthiella This was my pick for October! I‘m looking forward to it developing the way The Thursday Murder Club books have. 🤞 2w

I did not have any 5-star reads in October, and my reading pace really decreased at this time, but I thoroughly enjoyed this one. Osman‘s other series is on my to read list, with the books staring at me from my shelves, so this was my first encounter with Osman and his writing style. So humorous! There were enough red herrings and twists, and some surprises too, that made me fly through this. #12BooksOf2024

I placed a library hold for this as soon as it came out, because I loved the Thursday Murder Club books so very much. And for me, it isn‘t yet quite on par with Thursday Murder Club, but I can see the series growing on me as Osman develops these characters further. And I did really enjoy it! I liked the father-in-law/daughter-in-law mystery-solving duo of Amy and Steve, but Rosie stole the show. There‘s a lot to explore with all of these ⤵️

New series with a new murder solving team. As others stated the back and forth between very different and new main characters was a bit confusing initially, but the narrative soon evened out and the short snappy chapters propelled the story forward. With an engaging cast and the knowledge that Steve and Amy could drive to Cooper‘s Chase and meet the TMC gang it earned a 4 of 5 ⭐️ rating from me.

Richard Osman‘s thriller (the first in a new series) couples jet-setting action, wry observations - particularly about ageing and dealing with grief - sharp one-liners and an interesting trio of central characters. However for me, neither Rosie nor Amy quite rang true in terms of their characters and the plot - though entertaining - was too easy to guess. That said there‘s a lot of potential here and I will definitely read the sequel.

I had so much fun reading this one!! My first introduction to Osman‘s writing, I already can‘t wait to dive into his earlier books! While my #bookclub didn‘t love this one as much as I did, I‘m so excited to give a copy to my own much loved, soon-to-be-retired FIL in the hopes that we may go solve murders together! Funny & gripping— though I solved the biggest twist pretty early— I loved scene-stealing Rosie & want the sequel right now!! So fun!!!

Aims42 My book club was split on this one too. I loved it and am so ready for a sequel 😍 1mo
marleed I discovered I read for entertainment and my IRL bookclub is more critical of characters plot lines than am I. More than once I‘ve been alone or in the small minority of members who like a book. … I loved this book and will tread everything he writes! 1mo
TorieStorieS @Aims42 I was so surprised that anyone doesn‘t enjoy murder mixed with comedy! That‘s what seemed to divide our club! But I am with you on being anxious for a sequel! This was a surprise hit for the whole year for me!! 1mo
TorieStorieS @marleed I‘m lucky enough to be in 2 IRL clubs (used to be 3 but I exited one because I just couldn‘t get into some politics of selections!) and I‘m constantly surprised by what sticks in someone‘s craw and who can let things go for the ride of a novel! I think this plays out online too, to some extent, but it‘s always sad to be the only one who loves anything! Makes me extra grateful for Litsy overall!🥰 1mo

Bailedbailed

Is it a cosy murder mystery? Or a spy thriller? Or a gangster story? To me none of the above. I really like Richard Osman but he needs to stay in one lane. This is all over the place. A few laughs yes but a totally ridiculous plot. I couldn‘t anymore so bailed.

At first this felt literally all over the place since the two MCs weren‘t in the same location and then the plot took them around the world. But once I settled in I liked the story and will definitely read more of the series. Amy and Steve are interesting characters so it will be fun to see what happens next. Nicola Walker‘s narration was great as always. She really adds to the story for me.

Amiable I'm totally going to have to pick this up. Since I'm Amy and my husband is Steve. 😄 1mo
MallenNC @Amiable That‘s too funny! Steve is Amy‘s father-in-law in this but they have a good relationship. 1mo

Mehso-so

It‘s no Thursday Murder Club but it‘s not bad. The characters all felt a little one-dimensional with the same character trait being brought up over and over, which is what made this a so-so for me. It‘s zanier than TMC, which will work for some people but didn‘t pull me in enough to keep going with the series.

#ReadAway2024 #SeriesLove2024

Read as one of my November #Roll100 picks (#8 Any #BOTM) I was sad when I heard Osman was detouring from writing his Thursday Murder Club series to start a new one but I need not have worried, this series has a similar style & humor & I have a feeling it will grow on me even more as it unfolds. As it was I had a blast with Amy, her father-in-law Steve & especially Rosie, a world famous author not just along for ⬇️

DebinHawaii …the murder-solving ride but is often driving the bus, or rather private jet. (And let‘s not forget Trouble the cat.) 🐈‍⬛ Finished last night, it ended up on my #AuldLangSpine list & I gleefully await the next book in this series which will come after a new Thursday Murder Club. 🤗 2mo

A marvelous time. If you love the Thursday Murder Club books and enjoyed Killers of a Certain Age, I think you'll love this. Rosie is a treasure, I want to hug Steve, I am not chill enough to hang out with Amy, though I hope she gets more time with her husband soon. I definitely want to see more of the quiz club crowd. Now eagerly anticipating the next entry in this series, as well. 😊 1/?

Robotswithpersonality 2/? Osman continues to demonstrate his characteristically strong grasp of people, with compassionate and funny writing that does not shy away from the darker realities: the idea of living with grief and trauma, even if you're not always talking about it; the likely consequences of criminality.
The villain(s) were a bit over the top in a lot of ways, but they're kind of a minor point aside from questions of identity,
2mo
Robotswithpersonality 3/3 it isn't so much a grand face off, it's a caper, and the story is focused on the people trying to solve mysteries and stay alive, and share their lives. I can see certain crowds casting aspersions on the ChatGPT-as-tool-for-bad-guy and influencers-being-scammed story lines, but that honestly feels less 'moral of the story' and more 'this is our reality'. Reader beware. 😏 2mo
