Killers of a Certain Age
Killers of a Certain Age | Deanna Raybourn
Older women often feel invisible, but sometimes thats their secret weapon. Theyve spent their lives as the deadliest assassins in a clandestine international organization, but now that they're sixty years old, four women friends cant just retire its kill or be killed in this action-packed thriller by New York Times bestselling and Edgar Award-nominated author Deanna Raybourn. Billie, Mary Alice, Helen, and Natalie have worked for the Museum, an elite network of assassins, for forty years. Now their talents are considered old-school and no one appreciates what they have to offer in an age that relies more on technology than people skills. When the foursome is sent on an all-expenses paid vacation to mark their retirement, they are targeted by one of their own. Only the Board, the top-level members of the Museum, can order the termination of field agents, and the women realize theyve been marked for death. Now to get out alive they have to turn against their own organization, relying on experience and each other to get the job done, knowing that working together is the secret to their survival. Theyre about to teach the Board what it really means to be a womanand a killerof a certain age.

This is a fun action-thriller featuring four women over 60, on the cusp of retirement from 40 years as assassins. But soon it becomes clear the agency wants them more permanently retired… working together and covering the history of their career as well, this is a fast and fun read- and maybe the start to a new series from Raybourn? I love her historical fiction series and would love to see these characters more deeply developed in more books!

“We only kill people who are specifically targeted by the Museum for extermination and we don‘t freelance, ever … we have standards.” (p. 25). Billie, Mary Alice, Helen & Natalie are contract assassins working for an organization that targets evildoers. They‘re scheduled to retire, but someone at the Museum has put out a kill order on them. To stop the power play, they need to go back into action. Bad-assed women over 60, what‘s not to like?

I think for me this started off strong, slowed a bit about three quarters of the way through, then picked right back up again. Enjoyed the age related humor, the piano wire necklace, and other markers of their age and profession. For me it was a delightful read, but I‘m also a long term Raybourn fan and enjoy older heroines. This checked all the boxes for me and I‘ve recommended it to a few friends. If it turns into a series, I‘m definitely in.

Getting old isn't about to stop these four assassins trained by "the Museum" an organization originally dedicated to hunting down Nazis. When Billy and her original team realize they're about to be taken out on their retirement cruise, they have to confront the organization they taught them everything in order to make it out alive.

This book is hard to describe in that it was pretty good, had some great sass and riveting parts to it that had me racing through some chapters but it never grabbed me by the ankles and dragged me in.

After 40 years of working as assassins, Billie, Helen, Natalie and Mary Alice have earned their retirement. But it quickly becomes clear that they‘ve become the targets of assassination and must work together to move forward. I LOVED this book! It is so much fun and these broads are total badasses while being pretty normal people. Super excited to look for more from Raybourn.

This is a charmingly murderous adventure caper, that I was definitely expecting to be more nerve wracking than it ended up being. It took me a while to read - but only because the Queen died and then I had shingles! Once I got round to settling down to it I was through it in a flash. I like Raybourn‘s historicals more, but this is still pretty good.

Oh this was a fun read, and another one where I couldn‘t resist considering what 60ish yr old actresses might play Billie, Mary Alice, Natalie, and Helen in an adaption - which could last a few seasons so it would help if the actresses were friends! And the cameos of those that must die could be a great lineup.

I love this author‘s Veronica Speedwell series so I was excited to see what she would do with a more modern setting. This one wasn‘t quite as clever as Veronica but it was still fun. I listened to the audiobook and sometimes had a little trouble keeping up with the different characters. I liked that these “certain age” characters had starring roles.

If you're willing to suspend your disbelief about a few highly unlikely things that happen, this novel is a total hoot. I love how it addresses the invisibility and assumed irrelevance of women "of a certain age" with humor and joy. I think the app is my favorite character.

I'm soooo here for Badass Women of a Certain Age in Books‼️

Did I have to suspend belief a few times with the ease of Safe Houses and Fake Passports? Yes. Do I care? Absolutely not! These Women had style and sass with Hot Flashes and Arthritis. Ready for a Sequel or better yet a Series.

I think last line of Author's Acknowledgements sums up why I loved it: "Every person who identifies female has rage. I feel you, sister. This one's for you. "

Billie, Helen, Mary Alice, and Natalie are some bad mama jamas and it‘s so cool to see them kick butt and take names! Not only are these former assassins bad asses but they‘re hilarious as well! I enjoyed the easy camaraderie amongst them; it made me feel like I was hanging with friends. 😃 Ooh and there are New Orleans scenes! Icing on the cake for me. ⚜️10⭐️

126/150 One of the best books of 2022! Four retiring assassins discover that their company has decided to "retire" them permanently. Witty and whip smart, funny but never silly. All four assassins are very capable women, even in their 60s, they're deadly to anyone who gets in their way. I'm hoping that this is the beginning of a new series. 5 ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Red meets Kill Bill in this delicious romp featuring 4 of the most entertaining, deadly female characters ever put to page. This is such a different type of story from Raybourn and proves she‘s a versatile writer. Fans of her 19th century series may not appreciate the departure, but I sincerely hope they give this a chance.

If you‘re looking for a purely entertaining, action-packed adventure, this is your book.

4 female assassins in their 60's. They are ready to retire, when they find out they have been marked for termination.

I wanted to read this as soon as I saw the book. I want to read more stories of kick ass older women. I appreciated the touches of humor in what was mostly a serious thriller. And I loved the looks at the different lives these women had made for themselves. 5 star for me.

I am bailing out on this book. Rayburn is one of my favorite authors and the narrators are great but somehow this book is neither corky and funny enough, which would make it interesting, nor a dark and scary thriller, which would make it exciting. I love the ladies in the story but I couldn't buy the whole we are very serious assassins.
