The Man Who Loved Books Too Much
The Man Who Loved Books Too Much: The True Story of a Thief, a Detective, and a World of Literary Obsession | Allison Hoover Bartlett
In the tradition of The Orchid Thief, a compelling narrative set within the strange and genteel world of rare-book collecting: the true story of an infamous book thief, his victims, and the man determined to catch him. Rare-book theft is even more widespread than fine-art theft. Most thieves, of course, steal for profit. John Charles Gilkey steals purely for the love of books. In an attempt to understand him better, journalist Allison Hoover Bartlett plunged herself into the world of book lust and discovered just how dangerous it can be. John Gilkey is an obsessed, unrepentant book thief who has stolen hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of rare books from book fairs, stores, and libraries around the country. Ken Sanders is the self-appointed "bibliodick" (book dealer with a penchant for detective work) driven to catch him. Bartlett befriended both outlandish characters and found herself caught in the middle of efforts to recover hidden treasure. With a mixture of suspense, insight, and humor, she has woven this entertaining cat-and-mouse chase into a narrative that not only reveals exactly how Gilkey pulled off his dirtiest crimes, where he stashed the loot, and how Sanders ultimately caught him but also explores the romance of books, the lure to collect them, and the temptation to steal them. Immersing the reader in a rich, wide world of literary obsession, Bartlett looks at the history of book passion, collection, and theft through the ages, to examine the craving that makes some people willing to stop at nothing to possess the books they love.

I really enjoyed reading this book about an audacious book thief. It is hard to believe he seemingly thought there was nothing wrong with his actions. I loved reading about the collections for sale at antiquarian book fairs and bookstores. A pick for me.

The title of this book is a little misleading. It is a true crime account of a man named John Gilkey, who steals thousands of dollars worth of rare books. IMO, he did it because he‘s a thief, plain and simple, and felt entitled. Still, I‘m giving this a pick because I learned so much about rare books and finished the whole thing in a few hours. Bibliophiles will find something here to like. 4⭐️

Is it bad or wrong for me to find deep solace in books???

Some times can be very difficult, day or night.
Some times need to be alone times, for better or worse.

In those times, which are many and frequent, I turn to books, to read and to write.

*sighs* 🥺😢😔

Marilyncjackson My grandma used to tell us “Books are our friends. Treat them kindly and they will carry you through.” You‘re not strange. Sending you lots of support hugs 🤗 8mo
Suetara It‘s perfectly natural, I think, for bookish people to find solace in books, libraries, bookstores, etc.. When I am having a rough day, I head for the nearest book place (happily there‘s a library not to far from where I work). Just by being around books, whether browsing or borrowing/purchasing, I end up feeling better. I‘m sure things are rough right now, but from one who has been there, it does get better, eventually. ❤️ 8mo

I found this fascinating and kept sharing tidbits to my son! Crime within the rare/used book world is more common than I thought. This book focuses on one person who passed bad checks or stolen credit card numbers (1990s/early 2000s when it was easier to do) to hoard rare books for himself. His narcissistic nature was really infuriating. The author spent about 2 years interviewing him (sometimes when he was in prison) and others to write this.

umbrellagirl Sounds a bit like The Map Thief. 10mo

So odd that I just started this book about book theft and our local bookstore was just broken in! Several rare books taken and cash register untouched. Big enough news that it was on the local TV news, also. I hope they catch the creep(s) soon! my son and I were discussing theories about this for a long time. Https://www.philly.com/news/books-stolen-west-chester-pa-baldwins-to-kill-a-mockingbird-20190212.html

ValerieAndBooks @LeahBergen Theories include: probably not employees — there are just a few, who‘ve been there many years. But maybe a newer “regular “ customer. Windows had been broken to test the alarm system. Maybe a college student who knows something about literature, looking to get extra cash. Maybe someone relatively local who sells books online (ie Abe Books). Maybe someone who read this tagged book and was inspired to try 😱! This place is 3 miles away 10mo

I learned a lot about the rare book world, reading this book. But John Gilkey, a book thief, made me so angry I had to put the book down & walk away a few times. I unfortunately have personal experience with manipulators & know how they justify every bad thing they do. Written very well, the author tried to be impartial, it‘s a good read. My #SomethingYouSawOnLitsy for #NonFiction2019 & #ReceivedInALitsySwap for LittenLoveBingo #LLB19 #MountTBR2019

Traci1 I found this guy interesting (not in a good way) because it seemed like his "obsession" really could have been anything. He landed on books, but it seemed to me he could just have easily decided he wanted to collect rare coins or stamps or beanie babies. 11mo

School started back today (😢) so my commute started back (🙇🏻‍♀️) BUT that means my audiobook binging also started back (silver lining). This was my first audiobook of the year, and it‘s my non-violent true crime for the @bookriot #ReadHarder challenge. It was a very interesting story but I couldn‘t find as much sympathy for the thief as the author did - maybe I‘d have liked him more if he was stealing the books for the contents? 🤷🏻‍♀️

I rediscovered this book on my shelves when I reorganized everything and thought it would be a good choice for the "true crime" part of the Reading Women Challenge. It is an interesting peek into the world of book collectors and thieves, and the author had a lot of face time with a notorious thief who never stays incarcerated for long. Also I should say that the world of book dealers and collectors is portrayed as heavily male. @thereadingwomen

While a fascinating read, I left this book hoping for more discussion on the positive side of collecting. Bartlett touches on it, but I wanted more. Gilkey loves “collecting” books, except his definition of collecting is different than our definition. I did learn things about book collecting, which were very interesting. A fast read, but just okay for me. #whodunitthesequel

I fear June is turning into the month of the bail. 80 pages into this one and I dislike the author‘s dry style. DGRachel @Leftcoastzen I had hoped for more-something more compelling, and this writing just fell flat for me. @BookwormAHN I am off to the post office to get this off to you for #whodunitthesequel. Unfortunately, I was a bit disappointed in this book. It was a great premise, but fell somewhat flat (more details in the journal). It had a great cover though 😉

BookwormAHN I'll be on the lookout for it. The cover does look cool. Hopefully you'll enjoy the next book more. 2y
Mollyanna @BookwormAHN I hope so too. Sorry for picking somewhat of a dud... but who knows others may love it, right? 2y
BookwormAHN Right 😺 2y

Jess_Read_This I was disappointed with mine too. I wrote in the journal that I hope someone in the group really likes it! 2y
Mollyanna @Jess_Read_This it sounds like some of the others are good. And one never knows we just might not have been in the right frame of mind for ours... it's possible... 2y
Jess_Read_This @Mollyanna So true! ❤️I‘m super excited for the others books. 2y

This book was a fascinating look into the world of rare book dealer and thieves.
