The Fates Divide
The Fates Divide | Veronica Roth
In the second book of the Carve the Mark duology, globally bestselling Divergent author Veronica Roth reveals how Cyra and Akos fulfill their fates. The Fates Divide is a richly imagined tale of hope and resilience told in four stunning perspectives. The lives of Cyra Noavek and Akos Kereseth are ruled by their fates, spoken by the oracles at their births. The fates, once determined, are inescapable. Akos is in love with Cyra, in spite of his fate: He will die in service to Cyras family. And when Cyras father, Lazmet Noaveka soulless tyrant, thought to be deadreclaims the Shotet throne, Akos believes his end is closer than ever. As Lazmet ignites a barbaric war, Cyra and Akos are desperate to stop him at any cost. For Cyra, that could mean taking the life of the man who mayor may notbe her father. For Akos, it could mean giving his own. In a stunning twist, the two will discover how fate defines their lives in ways most unexpected. Praise for Carve the Mark: #1 New York Times bestseller * Wall Street Journal bestseller * USA Today bestseller * #1 IndieBound bestseller Roth skillfully weaves the careful world-building and intricate web of characters that distinguished Divergent. VOYA (starred review) Roth offers a richly imagined, often brutal world of political intrigue and adventure, with a slow-burning romance at its core. ALA Booklist

I read it because I read the first one. The names of people, places, and planets made this one confusing mostly because I couldn't pronounce them. For me that's what makes the book flow, not if I'm stuck trying to figure out how to pronounce the name. #NSR221, Science Fictiion I'll say Speculative Fiction under Military. @Nessavamusic

I'm really sad this one is over! I really wanted it to keep going! I just love the 2 main characters. I love that they face things alone rather than always having to rely on each other. Sometimes you need to face your own demons by yourself. I LOVED this! I wish their was a third!

Great book, great sequel, great plot, great plot twists. Just... not the most memorable book I‘ve ever read? Idk I read it a few months ago and forgot to review it, and barely remember what actually happened. But I‘m still going to read the new short stories being published in Roth‘s new anthology so it was still good!!

I need escapism and fantasy after the last lot of heavy contemporary reads. So this one will be it. #currentlyreading #veronicaroth Have completely forgotten what happened in book one. As is the way. #yafantasy #booktwo

I love when books are just as beautiful under the dust jacket as they are with it on. Not only did the color of the book match the jacket but there was the map (every good fantasy/sci-fi has a map) pressed into the cover.

“There's poetry in it, in that poetry can be raw, and cruel, and strange...”

Enjoyed this series. The world building was interesting, though I would have loved to see more of the other planets. Really enjoyed the Ogra aspects. Visible energy, super human powers, oracles, and change ups I didn‘t see coming all were captivating. It seemed like Roth was experimenting with writing style which was a little distracting but overall kept my interest.

Finally reading the sequel to Carve the Mark - I actually enjoyed the first book (contrary to popular opinion) but not sure about the second book. All the switching from characters and first to third person is a little much. Oh well, ferry rides are great reading time! #worldwaterweek

Hollyreadsalot I really enjoyed them both! Second one did take a bit of an effort to get into, but worth it! 6y
CouronneDhiver I haven‘t read it, but I suspect that the vast majority of the mob that caused the big uproar didn‘t either (at least not well). Lol 6y

I didn't think this second book was as original or as exciting as the first one. It wasn't bad, it just wasn't thrilling and it was a little too predictable. It seemed like most of the interesting information was already given.

kimmypete1 That seems to be her MO. Divergent was good Insurgent was Decent, Allegiant not so much. 6y

I just really don‘t like Roth‘s writing style. I like this story but I dislike the way it‘s written enough to not recommend the book, and to be honest, I spent the whole time reading this wishing I wasn‘t.

Violated. That's how I feel. I could understand the shift from first person to third for Akos and Cyra in book one. But this? No. Do not hook me in a story and then slam first person present fucking tense in my face. That's lazy. If you, as a writer, can't manage to write distinct points of view, write in 3rd person and be done with it. 😡

I liked book two more then book one. Still not a series I love, but the characters were more layered and interesting in this one. There was a twist which I had guessed back in book one, and not as many ramifications as I felt there should be.

I am sad that this series has come to an end. I‘ve grown attached to Cyra and Akos. The ending was bittersweet and gave me major feels. I enjoyed reading the story from four different perspectives. One of which is a third person narrative ( the other three are first person) which was my favorite one to read. #veronicaroth #thefatesdivide

I am giving this one a pick. I enjoyed it more than the first one. I like how the story played out. However, I find Veronica Roth‘s writing often overly dramatic. Characters often are exposed to extreme pain but become stronger through the pain. I don‘t know about anyone else but I become completely useless when I am in pain! However, I love new works and escapism. This allowed me to do that! Plus ending was much better than Divergent!

readinginthedark I think it depends on the type of pain and what I‘m working toward. I‘ve pushed myself through some serious pain to catch my son when he was falling off a bed. Of course, I hurt myself even worse that way, but you do what you have to do. 6y

Finished tagged audiobook on my morning audio walk (review coming soon). I was so lucky to have such a beautiful day. This was exactly the right book to read for me. I needed something to be able to put down when I had school work to do, and was easy to pick up when I had a few minutes. I enjoyed the characters that were not always likable but necessary for the story. I recommend this for anyone who likes YA and is okay with a good story but occasional cliches.
