Clementine
Clementine: The Life of Mrs. Winston Churchill | Sonia Purnell
13 posts | 10 read | 49 to read
"Sonia Purnell has at long last given Clementine Churchill the biography she deserves. Sensitive yet clear-eyed, Clementine tells the fascinating story of a complex woman struggling to maintain her own identity while serving as the conscience and principal adviser to one of the most important figures in history." Lynn Olson, bestselling author of Citizens of London Shortlisted for the 2016 Plutarch Award A long-overdue tribute to the extraordinary woman behind Winston Churchill. By Winston Churchills own admission, victory in the Second World War would have been impossible without her. Until now, however, the only existing biography of Churchills wife, Clementine, was written by her daughter. Sonia Purnell finally gives Clementine her due with a deeply researched account that tells her life story, revealing how she was instrumental in softening FDRs initial dislike of her husband and paving the way for Britains close relationship with America. It also provides a surprising account of her relationship with Eleanor Roosevelt and their differing approaches to the war effort. Born into impecunious aristocracy, the young Clementine was the target of cruel snobbery. Many wondered why Winston married her, but their marriage proved to be an exceptional partnership. Beautiful and intelligent, but driven by her own insecurities, she made his career her mission. Any real consideration of Winston Churchill is incomplete without an understanding of their relationship, and Clementine is both the first real biography of this remarkable woman and a fascinating look inside their private world. From the Hardcover edition.

This was a very engaging read. I always wondered what a woman married to Churchill would be like. This woman was so impressive and I have mad respect for who she was and how she helped Churchill. Highly recommend this read.

currentlyreadinginCO My fiance got me this and I've been letting it sit on my shelf! Thanks for pushing it up my list 2y
KristiAhlers @thereadingreference you're welcome. I think she was a fascinating woman. I sadly didn't know much about her before reading this book. 2y

A look at the fascinating life of Clementine Churchill nee Hosier. From supporting the voting rights of women, organising major charity projects during the war, she refused to be pushed into the background. 4🌟

Thanks to NetGalley & publishers, Quarto Publishing Group - White Lion Publishing, for the opportunity to read an ARC. #NetGalley

#LitsyAtoZ #LetterC I highly recommend this book! A biography of Mrs. Churchill, it is also a probing look at her marriage, her parenting, and her rich and turbulent times. Using correspondence, interviews, and archival material, Purnell paints a compelling picture of Clementine as a strong but anxious woman who was instrumental in the life and works of Winston Churchill. In fact, without her, he would have surely self-destructed. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

M-D I already have my C for my biography challenge, but will add this to my list of ones for the future. 😃😃 8y

Continuing with my #LetterC book for #LitsyAtoZ -- it dovetails quite well with The Crown, the Netflix series we've been watching.

I consider myself fairly well-educated, but this surprised me. I didn't know that at the beginning of WWI, the British coast had been bombarded. (So much I need to learn!)

beagle.mama Huh, I didn't know that either. 8y
CocoReads It's never something I learned in school. Definitely something I learned on my own by reading books well after my formal education ended 8y
Lreads I've learned more as an adult and I'm still happily learning as I go! 8y
MyNamesParadise I think I actually knew this before! Must've been from a movie or documentary because while I can be a bit of a WWII fanatic, I'm not so well versed in WWI! 8y
