Clementine Churchill
Clementine Churchill: A Life in Pictures | Sonia Purnell
13 posts | 10 read | 49 to read
Foreword by Harriet Walter. Clementine Churchill: A Life in Pictures is a fully illustrated and abridged edition of Sonia Purnells acclaimed biography, First Lady, including over 100 stunning and rarely seen photographs. Without Winston Churchills inspiring leadership Britain could not have survived its darkest hour. Without his wife Clementine, however, he might never have become Prime Minister. By his own admission, his role in the Second World War would have been impossible but for Clemmie. That Clementine should have become Britains First Lady was by no means preordained. She may have been born an aristocrat but her childhood was far from gilded. Deprived of affection, a secure home and sometimes even food on the table, by the time she entered high society she had become the target of cruel snobbery. Yet in Winston she discovered a partner as emotionally insecure as herself; and in his career she found her mission. Theirs was a marriage that was to change the course of history. Clementine gave Winston confidence, conviction and counsel. Not only was she involved in some of the most crucial decisions of the war, she also exerted an influence over her husband and his governments that might be judged scandalous today. Her ability to manage this exceptional man, and to charm Britains allies, earned her the deep respect of world leaders, ministers, generals and critics alike. While her tireless work to alleviate suffering on the Home Front and abroad made her a champion to many in the population at large. From the personal and political upheavals of the Great War, through the Churchills wilderness years in the 1930s, to Clementines desperate efforts to sustain Winston during the struggle against Hitler, Clementine Churchill: A Life in Pictures continues to uncover the memory of one of the most remarkable women of modern times.

This was a very engaging read. I always wondered what a woman married to Churchill would be like. This woman was so impressive and I have mad respect for who she was and how she helped Churchill. Highly recommend this read.

currentlyreadinginCO My fiance got me this and I've been letting it sit on my shelf! Thanks for pushing it up my list 2y
KristiAhlers @thereadingreference you're welcome. I think she was a fascinating woman. I sadly didn't know much about her before reading this book. 2y

A look at the fascinating life of Clementine Churchill nee Hosier. From supporting the voting rights of women, organising major charity projects during the war, she refused to be pushed into the background. 4🌟

Thanks to NetGalley & publishers, Quarto Publishing Group - White Lion Publishing, for the opportunity to read an ARC. #NetGalley

#LitsyAtoZ #LetterC I highly recommend this book! A biography of Mrs. Churchill, it is also a probing look at her marriage, her parenting, and her rich and turbulent times. Using correspondence, interviews, and archival material, Purnell paints a compelling picture of Clementine as a strong but anxious woman who was instrumental in the life and works of Winston Churchill. In fact, without her, he would have surely self-destructed. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

M-D I already have my C for my biography challenge, but will add this to my list of ones for the future. 😃😃 8y

Continuing with my #LetterC book for #LitsyAtoZ -- it dovetails quite well with The Crown, the Netflix series we've been watching.

I consider myself fairly well-educated, but this surprised me. I didn't know that at the beginning of WWI, the British coast had been bombarded. (So much I need to learn!)

beagle.mama Huh, I didn't know that either. 8y
CocoReads It's never something I learned in school. Definitely something I learned on my own by reading books well after my formal education ended 8y
Lreads I've learned more as an adult and I'm still happily learning as I go! 8y
MyNamesParadise I think I actually knew this before! Must've been from a movie or documentary because while I can be a bit of a WWII fanatic, I'm not so well versed in WWI! 8y
